Assessment complete with bibliography on microorganisms in water for the HSC Biology syllabus. Aim: To investigate the number and type of microorganisms present in 3 different water samples. Safety Precautions: As we are growing bacteria and fungi proper sterile techniques are of utmost importance to avoid growing any human pathogens or becoming infected with any harmful substances. Autoclaving is used to sterilise equipment and all equipment is washed afterwards. Hands must be washed after the experiment is complete and all students need to be cautious of open flames from Bunsen burners. Once the petri dishes have been incubated and examined they must be disposed of properly by autoclaving and then being thrown into the garbage to ensure that no contamination occurs to any humans.
