WEEKEND Q+A #3: K888
FRIDAY 22ND 5PM - 8PM

A LITTLE ABOUT K888

Hi all! What's crackalackin'?

My name's Kate and I'm one of the National Moderators here at ATAR Notes. A bit about me - my favourite sport is soccer, if I had to consume one beverage for the rest of my life it'd be tea, I hate vacuuming but don't mind sweeping, and I really want a cat (but would also be happy with a dog). I grew up in a rural area and completed VCE in 2016, having studied Revolutions, English, French, Chemistry, Biology and Methods. I've since moved down to the big smoke and I'm now in my second year of Physiotherapy at Monash University - my dream course!

Feel free to ask me absolutely any questions, but I think I'm best posed to answer questions about post-high school life, dealing with health issues during schooling, studying physiotherapy, moving out, or anything else

HOW DO I GET INVOLVED?

How does living in the suburbs compare to living in the good ol' country?

What's your favourite expression?

Is it a coincidence that the first part of your username sounds like Kate?

Hi K888 :)

How did you find the whole moving out process? Is there anything you'd do differently if you could do it again, or any advice you'd give to people looking to move out?

How have you found studying at the Monash Peninsula campus?

Do you follow any soccer teams? If so, which ones? Is there any particular reason(s) you support them?

Money-wise, how difficult is it living away from home as a uni student?

To start, why Physio, K888?
Hmm, I've always been interested in the health industry - my parents both work in a hospital so I've been exposed to it from a young age.
I was first really interested in med (particularly in year 9) but this changed to physio/allied health as I did work experience in year 10 with the physios at the local hospital and when I had to do a heap of physio for injuries across year 10/11/12. I think as a physio you can make a really big difference to peoples lives and improve their quality of life so much - which is a huge privilege.

Living in the suburbs is nice, it's nice to broaden my horizons! I miss the peace and quiet and green spaces of the country but the convenience of the suburbs wins out. It took me a bit of time to adjust to peak hour traffic (tbh I'm still adjusting a bit even now) - peak hour just doesn't exist back home haha.

Favourite expression - definitely changes a fair bit, probably "wizard" is up there currently (my boyfriend sitting next to me as I type this is nodding in agreement)

Is it a coincidence? Perhaps. What do you think? ;)

Hi there! So I'm at Monash which uses a range of criteria - namely ATAR and your performance in an interview (however, I think they're removing the interview from their selection process after this year). I personally got an ATAR of 97.05 but I qualified for the Monash Guarantee so needed an 86 to qualify, then I sat an interview at the start of January last year. I believe there's a range of people in my course who scored between the high 80s and high 90s (you don't really ask people about their ATAR in uni), plus mature age students who've come from other courses.

In terms of cohort size, there's about 120 of us in my cohort (so kind of like a year 12 sized cohort), but I believe they increased their intake for this year's first years to ~170 (although I think they might potentially be reducing this).

Hey!

Moving out - it was really exciting for me! The biggest drag was that first grocery shop, when I had to stock up my pantry with the essentials - still the most expensive grocery shop I've done. My advice to people would be - think of the utensils you take for granted at home before you move out. Like can openers, egg flips, wooden spoons, peelers, strainers and the like. Because you won't get too far with cooking if you don't have those haha.
Another tip is that op shops are great for picking up stuff like crockery and drinkware for cheap (and they usually come in matching sets because the old people who donate their stuff to op shops love matching sets ;)). Don't buy expensive stuff because you'll be upset if you drop it and it smashes (which is guaranteed to happen).

The Peninsula campus is great - it's small, quiet, and is nice and leafy so it reminds me of home a bit. It only took me 1 day to learn where everything was and how to navigate around, and there's always a free seat in the library. If you want a really hectic uni experience it might not be for you, but I love it. I go to Clayton once a week for anatomy and it's wayyyyyy too busy for me haha.

Soccer teams - absolutely! I support Melbourne Victory in the A-League, and Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga.
I support Victory because they were the only Melbourne-based team in the A-League when it started (and I'd never jump ship #onlyoneteaminmelbourne). Borussia Dortmund - idk how I started supporting them, I think I just started watching some of their games and really got into it. And then I got a favourite player, and he plays for them, so that's my story of supporting them haha.
Aside from that I like watching a lot of other leagues but I don't really support any teams in those leagues.

Favourite Melb Victory player?

Do you prefer KMart or BigW?

Favourite part of physio so far?
1. Hmm, tough one - can I name past players? If so, definitely Marco Rojas. Absolute class player.

2. Kmart. This isn't even a question

3. Favourite part - hard to say. I think first year in general was great - I really loved musculoskeletal physio as a whole, so that was great. Perhaps some of the best stuff has been outside of uni - the events I've been able to go to because I'm a physio student. I went to a seminar last year on sports medicine which covered a heap of different topics (and was hosted by two legends in sports medicine) and featured a lot of world-known names in sports medicine. I also went to a seminar on shoulder instability led by a really experienced shoulder surgeon and a specialist shoulder physio. Both were amazing and taught me so much!

Money-wise, how difficult is it living away from home as a uni student?
I'm lucky enough that my parents still support me in terms of paying for my rent, but I have a job so I support myself with all my other expenses - groceries, petrol, etc. It's definitely a bit of an adjustment going from living at home where you don't have to pay for groceries and cook meals for yourself to being solely responsible for buying your groceries, paying for petrol and all that. It's not all that bad, though - it makes you more fiscally responsible and you realise quickly that there's a huge difference between what you want and what you need! It takes practice, but it's definitely doable.

I honestly don't even know how I came up with K888 haha. I think I had a vaguely similar handle for Khan Academy or something and was like...why don't I add an extra 8 or two?
It's an exciting story ;)

Favourite part about studying physio - hard to say really, because I love all of it, but probably all the relationships I'm forming with peers and teachers and the skills I'm learning. It's really cool to become good friends with people who are like-minded and have the same drive as you, and I think learning physio skills goes without saying - it's cool to learn stuff and be able to say at the end of the day "I'm gonna use this in a few years time to improve someone's health" :)

Berry tea. It's just not tea. It's an abomination.
