It's most certainly not a dumb question. It is, however, a
big question. I think it'd be more beneficial for you if we helped you find the purpose rather than outright giving our viewpoint. To find the viewpoint, let's follow some questions.
> What is the setting? Think: race relations in Australia during the time period
> What are some characteristics of the plot? Think: familial struggles against a government heavily biased against them
> How does the setting relate to the plot? Think: how did the culture of the time allow the plot to occur?
> What are some of the obstacles overcome by the characters? Think: what can we learn from that?
Using these points, can you see what Davis is trying to tell us? Are there any lessons being taught? Write down your thoughts, and we can go from there and provide extra help
