6 or 5 subjects?

Well i was wondering if it's worth doing 6 subjects in year 12. I'm doing further 3.4 this year by distant education and due to some things that happened in my life  :'(  I was unable to submit some work so due to that i didn't pass unit 3 therefore i am registered as non atar student which mean unscored so i was wondering if it's a good thing to do 6 subjects next year since i'll be doing the same thing that i'm doing on further 3/4 this year? So what do you guys think?  i'm trying to get a high enough Atar to get into medicine. If you could help that'll be great. thanks for your time reading this . :(

You have to take in a lot of factors into consideration. First one is whether you have enough time to juggle 6 subjects. All the maths exams and sciences are run on consecutive days in the exam period. Year to year it is usually further 1, further 2, methods 1, methods 2, spesh 1, spesh 2, chem, physics. The only break you get between all these exams is the weekend so you also have to consider if your brain will still be performing well once you do reach your chemistry or physics exam! If you do plan on doing 6 subjects the best thing to do is know what your best 4 subjects will be so you put more effort into those subjects.

It's completely up to you, if you think you can handle it do it.  However, if I was in your position, i would just do the 5 considering the workload for Specialist, Methods, Physics and Chem can get a bit insane at times. You don't honestly have that much to gain by doing a 6th subject, and you will over-work yourself with it. Quality of study scores over quantity. GL :)

I'd say it depends on what subjects you're doing. It may be hard to cope with six 'difficult' subjects. If you're a strong maths student, you shouldn't need to dedicate much time to further maths, maybe a few hours per week.

if youre a strong math student, which it seems you would be since youre doing methods and spesh, further won't be too difficult for you.
i probably put less than 50 hours into the subject over the entire year last year, including time doing the assignment and worked on spesh/chem in class and came out with an okay respectable score (over 40).
if you're aiming for high 40s though, of course you're gonna need to put in more time.
but imean, you may as well take further since it doesnt require that much effort. if you go in with the intention of it being an increment subject (since only two maths can be in your top 4 anyways), and don't put much time into it/worry too much about how you do in it, it won't add very much to your stress levels and it can still boost your aggregate by a couple of marks. besides, since you've already done unit 3/learned half the content, why not?

oh and i also did further along side five other subjects. :)

Honestly, the question is so subjective, it's impossible to answer.

What are your strengths? What subjects are you good at and enjoy doing?

Also a 6 subject workload and even 1 vet and 5 subject workload in Year 12 would, in my opinion, be too much. Especially considering the fact you had trouble with completing U3 further, to be honest, I think you should think about trying to reduce your workload to make it more manageable in year 12. The effect of a 6th or even 5th subject is negligible to your ATAR (unless you need a really high ATAR (i.e. >98) for your desired tertiary course) and having the extra free time to study may help you to nail your top 4 or top 5 subjects. Just something to think about.

All the best for sorting out the issues which are affecting your study and for Year 12 :)

Thank you guys for your replies I've actually been finishing off all the chapters for further maths xD I did linear chapter in one week and got it done and yeah i love my maths!! So i think finishing off further 3/4 this year and doing practice exams fr it next year once every week or once every fortnight might just help me out a lot for the end of the year exam so yeah What do you guys think? But i kinda dislike Chemistry so i was thinking of putting in a lot efforts towards chem and spesh :) and do all the homeworks regularly through out the year

Good idea, I'd go with the 6 subjects too, as long as further is that 6th subject. You've learned half the content already so it wont be anything new in yr12, plus, you dont need to dedicate much time to further as well, which really eases the pressure.

As for a VET course, probably not, you should just stick with further I reckon.

Yeah i think that'll be the best choice for me. Doing Vet wil be just too much since i would have to learn new things :) . Hopefully i get the score i'm aiming for. By the way whats the best way to get a 90 Atar, what do i need to get in each subject?

You could punch some numbers into http://vce.atarcalc.com/ and get some kind of idea of the minimum study scores you might want to aim for. But aim higher, it's better to overshoot your goal than miss it. If you're putting in the effort to study, might as well aim to do your best and go for something like 40+ raw scores in each subject. You might want to look at ATAR cut-offs for what course you're looking at too.

If you want something a bit more specific than those numbers (like what grades you need on sacs), I wouldn't bother giving you an estimate. Just aim to do as well as possible on everything, and if you happen to miss then just look at what you did wrong/right and improve for the next sac or exam.

I am aiming really high well i put all my raw scores as 35+ and the atar calc gave me a score about 93! So yeah i guess if i work hard enough and not slack off i might be able to achieve that score or maybe even better! I'm planning on stating my course work during end of the year holidays which can give me a head start and less work during school time so i can balance my school work with social life!

The advice given specifically to people with distance education is to choose subjects that are your strengths whether you like them or not. The real skill you have to develop is to learn to "put up with them" if you don't particularly enjoy them. I heard this when exchange students from rural areas came to our school and were counselled on subject choices. It was a general trend in the personalities and attitudes of most students. Everyone had high expectations but had several weaknesses in many subjects. However, each student had very particular strengths in specific subjects. If they were to continue this, they would surely have a clear aim at success rather than choosing a multitude of subjects which they are uncomfortable in and more likely to give up in the future.
Keep in mind that this was the advice given to the lot of rural students that came to our school. It may or may not apply to you. Do what you think is based after pondering over everyone else had recommended so far. It's ultimately you choice and your future  ;)

I guess so. I'll try my best to cope with 6 subjects next year and if i find it difficult to do them i'll always have the option of dropping 1 so yeah hopefully i do a great job and prove some people that i can live beyond what i'm capable of.
