Dumb question but have heard conflicting answers: Do you need to do Intermediate Macro to major in Eco? I know you need it for lvl 3 Micro and Macro, but you don't need to do them to achieve the major, so pretty unsure...

You definitely need Intermediate Macroeconomics now to major in Economics for BCom. See the handbook page or the 2018 BCom Study Planner. It was only within the last one or two years that Intermediate Macro became explicitly required for the major, so that may be the reason for the conflicting answers.

Anyone else having an issue with the LMS showing new notifications but it says that nothing requires attention? I did a couple of the quizzes for biochem and can't access my marks section either (I've tried on different browsers).

I'm having this issue, as well as accessing a subject that I enrolled in a couple of days ago. Does anyone know how long it takes for the LMS to recognise enrolment changes?

CVEN30009

Does anyone happen to have a recording of the first lecture of the CVEN30009 semester (even if it's from previous semesters)? My car broke down on the way to uni this morning so I missed out on the first lecture of the sem. I would really appreciate if anyone could help me out as the lecture recording won't be published.

In regards to this, for one of my subjects the lecturer said the lectures are recorded but we have to email a request if we want to access to a particular recording
Do you think i can still report this to UMSU? Shouldn't the lecturer just upload them each week for us?

For first year B.Science, I had somewhere between 19-22 contact hours per week depending on when I had pracs. If you compare your timetable to someone studying Commerce or Arts, you'll realise that Science (and maybe Biomed???) have the most numerous number of contact hours. Unfortunately, as you continue through uni, Science kids will probably have more contact hours than the other bachelors. I'm in second sem of my third year and I still have about 16-18 weekly contact hours.

But on the upside, the more hours you spend in class, the more friends you can make in your subjects and you'll soon realise that friends are one of the most important things for later years when you're struggling with a concept or topic !

Hi,
Please excuse the fact that this is a very basic question. I was just wondering what a general week of uni for a biomed student is like? In terms of, are you there Mon-Fri and for how long, on average? I'm not looking for anything detailed, just wanted more of a perspective on what the schedule's (generally) like, rather than just the number of contact hours.
Just inquiring as I want to see how it would work with fitting in a part time job, other activities etc.
Thanks!

Hi,

I am first year biomedicine student, so will be able to answer your questions. Generally throughout the week, I have 10 lectures (3 for each of my core subjects, and 1 for my breadth (breadth is like the electives you have in school)). You are able to watch the lectures at home since they are recorded, and hence most students don't end up coming to them. Then you have the tutorials (they are basically classes with 15-20 people, and a teacher that helps you do questions, or understand the content from lecture), and I have 4 of those, one for each subject. I am at uni for around 2-3 hours a day on average (usually early mornings cause biology lectures are at 8), which works really well with a part time job and whatever other activities you want do, as you are able to make your own timetable!

It's worth also adding here that as you progress through your degree your number of contact hours typically goes down :)

Yeah, I only have about 13 contact hours in 3rd year compared to 20+ in 1st year. The amount of time you spend (see: that you're required) at uni goes down over time, while the amount of work you're expected to do by yourself/away from class goes up. It will also vary a lot depending on how you specialise/what major you pick.
