Hey all, thought I might start a topic where people can share and ask for advice for their prerequisites. I for one have no clue what I need for doctor/nursing. I aspire to be one but don't really know what prerequisites I need. does continuing a language and the school leadership club help to this?

Hey WQ,

Prerequisites usually refer to subject prerequisites (i.e. Study Score of 25 in Chemistry) but can also be things like the UCAT (basically a test required for undergraduate medical admissions) or a folio for degrees like design. There is also an ATAR required for undergraduate nursing (particularly to become a registered nurse) and medicine courses.
You can look at the uni websites for more info on the prerequisites for each of their courses. The pre-requisites for a course depend whether you want to do it undergraduate (your first bachelor degree) or postgraduate (degree after you've done a bachelor's degree) and what the uni decides on.

Hope this helps! :)

Doctor - Generally you're looking at either undergraduate or postgraduate medicine courses. (Bachelor of Medicine at Monash is the only Victorian uni for undergrad med, from memory, and people generally also look interstate too. There are more options for postgrad, but you'll need to take another related course and a bunch of prerequisite units during undergrad uni to do that.) These require usually particular raw study scores in English (or its equivalents) and Chemistry within your VCE curriculum, as well as sitting the UCAT (check out the section of the forum dedicated to that) and MMI interviews. ATARs for undergrad medicine is generally really high, as it's typically one of the most competitive courses.

Nursing - Generally requires some form of English and Maths (minimum Year 11), with English needing a certain score or higher. ATAR will also make up a part of your consideration.

For prerequisites (or prereqs as I like to call them), you can check many, but not all, courses at VTAC Course Search for many university courses available at Victorian tertiary institutes (e.g. uni, TAFE, specialist colleges). However, this is usually good as a starting point and you should also do research via the institute themselves (literally just a Google search of "Bachelor of Nursing at [insert desired institute]" will bring up links), as Lm21074 has mentioned, as well as heading to Open Days (usually in July/ August each year) and other events where you can visit campuses and talk to people in person.

EDIT: Added a link that I forgot to add beforehand.
