ATAR for Engineering at Monash

Hi everyone  ;D,
So I want to get into Mechatronics engineering at Monash University, so I will be doing the bachelor of engineering (honours) course. So their website says that you need a 92.3 ATAR to get into the course, but they also have that the lowest offer that was made was an 82.6 ATAR. Can I still possibly get into Monash if I was to get an ATAR or 80-ish. Thanks!

Here's the link for the course:

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but it is very unlikely that an 80 ATAR would be enough to receive an offer. Universities make offers based on a selection rank which is a combination of ATAR and subject adjustments/SEAS. That lowest ATAR offer of 82.6 would have been from someone who had their selection rank increased to at least 92.3 through something like SEAS.

Monash has a maximum 10 ATAR points that can be gained through adjustments (https://www.monash.edu/study/courses/atar-explained/atar-scores). Even considering you receive the maximum 10 point adjustment, an 80 ATAR would unfortunately still fall short of an offer (unless next years selection rank is substantially lower than this years). There are no guarantees when it comes to adjustments or lowest selection rank, so the best thing you can do to increase the likelihood of an offer is to just do your best in your exams and maximise your ATAR  :).

I'm not a complete expert on this stuff but I believe that if you do fall short in regards to ATAR, one option is to do a different course at Monash/go to another university and then apply for a transfer in a later year (https://www.monash.edu/study/courses/entry-pathways-domestic). I would highly recommend contacting your course advisor or Monash University (through the contact us box on the course page) ASAP as I'm honestly not fully sure of these things myself. Hopefully, at least some of this has been helpful for you!

I agree with everything iamflowting said, what a great response :)
However, I'd like to place some emphasis on this quote! There are definitely no guarantees, while the lowest selection rank usually falls around the same number every year please remember that this year was not like any other.

Don't worry too much, there is a larger chance than normal that Monash might take lower selection ranks or ATARs due to COVID (while it is probably unlikely, there is still a chance)

Best of luck for your exams and entry into engineering at Monash!!  :D

One thing to add: if you want to get into it most of all, keep it on the top of your preference list. It won't disadvantage you to do so, as you'll be given your highest preference which you qualify for. Even if you 'know' you won't get in, keep it there regardless, if you can. :) (After all, that's what I'm doing with the course I want!)

The Cat In The Hat is absolutely right- please do not move your preferences
One of my mate's got a 70ish ATAR and his course need an 80 and he got in!
SO keep it as your number 1, just make sure after you get your ATAR at least 1 of your preferences requires an ATAR below your actual ATAR
