Can you give a decimal answer if it's exact?

What the title says. If the answer is 1/10 for example, can I give the answer as 0.1, since it's still exact? I got penalised for it in a practice exam but didn't know it was disallowed.

The only reason you will get penalised for writing 0.1 rather than 1/10 is if you are explicitly asked to write your answer in the form a/b, where a and b are integers.

Also note that sometimes you may need to write 0.1 rather than 1/10 if you are asked to write your answer correct to one decimal place.

Always reread the question after answering to check that your answer is in the form required.

Ok, unless the question states the write to a number of decimal points, its best to leave in exact values (fractions, logs..). This is to stay on the safe side for getting marks for the answer.
