Methods 1/2 to Further 3/4

Hello, I was wondering if it’d be better to continue doing methods 1/2 this year then further 3/4 next year or drop into general 1/2 now and further 3/4 next year. I’m wondering what the advantages and disadvantages of doing both would be. Thank you!!!

Methods opens pathway to A LOT of courses in university as it is a prerequisite for them.

Methods isn't a prereq for most university course- maybe some, but not all . :)

Can you please list out a convincingly sufficient amount of degrees that have it as a “prerequisite”? There may be many disciplines that treat it as “assumed knowledge” but that is entirely different from the word “prerequisite”.

I’m quite confronted by this statement because almost all degrees up here do not require the HSC equivalents of 2U and MX1. I would like to see why this differs in Victoria.

Thanks for that, the uni course we're looking at doesn’t require a maths so it doesn’t matter too much if we do methods 3/4 or further 3/4. But I agree, doing methods 3/4 would be best as it does open a lot of options for courses.

However, we’ve decided that further 3/4 will allow for higher marks since it’s less challenging and there’s a lighter workload. My question is: should I do methods 1/2 for the rest of this year then do further 3/4 next year or drop methods now and move into further 1/2.
2019 -> Methods 1/2 or Further 1/2
2020 -> Further 3/4

Thanks again :D

I love how you basically had to repeat your question to get it back on track. Thanks for that Srd.... it is important to note when we're starting to go off topic and rectify it before mods have to do splitting work.

Look aspiring does have a point (somewhat... not expressed in the best way): You will find methods as a pre req in a number of degrees (particularly those that are technical and require that level of understanding)... Saying most is a massive stretch, especially if you haven't gone through them all and tallied it up (or even experienced the process!)

To put it simply... I would consider staying with Methods if you are competent and believe you can get a decent SS in it. The biggest misconception about Further is that it's an 'easy' subject, because it is not, in any way. Sure, the content might be a bit 'easier' but this in itself presents a challenge, given VCE is essentially a competition and when you have a big pool of students at the top end, it has to be separated somehow.

Then again, I think if you have set your mind on Further, do 1/2 first. Foundation is extremely important, along with actually having a chance to review what's taught before it really matters in Year 12. Further's content is extremely lengthy - especially the first part of core which really nearly goes for a term in itself (data/stats)

Good luck! :)

If you have already decided that methods is not for you and you 100% won't do it next year I think it's pretty simple to do Further 1/2 --> Further 3/4. You should be able to be able to get a good foundation for 3/4 - whilst methods will take you in a whole different direction which will be effectively pointless since you won't be doing it next year.

Haha, good pick up. I did do spec last year. This post is for someone that's currently in year 11 and asked me for advice on what they should do. :)
