Hey guys, just thought I'd start this thread for thoses wanting to gain admission even though we have a year left prior to the entrance examination lol. Feel free to contribute, and hopefully we can share ideas to help prepare. Good luck!
BTW, I am trying out myself xD.

Tests
Mathematics - 60 questions in 30 minutes
(This test you should be able to study for; tests curriculum knowledge from year 9& year 10 - might be worth knowing methods?? 1&2)
Numerical Reasoning - 50 questions in 30 minutes
(This test I think you could prepare by doing a lot of worded problems AND VERY QUICK CALCULATIONS; the Melbourne high/macrob test mostly had a bunch of worded problems which; took ages to  complete, and a lot of 'time-consuming' calculations.)

Science Reasoning
I think just know how to interpret graphs and stuff?? By the term reasoning, I assume it is trying to test one's cognitive skills, rather than curriculum knowledge.

Science Writing
From what I read, its usually about science as a human endeavour type of stuff? And that you need to write about in an information report style?

Feel free to contribute to this thread; I am looking for just a much resources and help as you guys trying out for this looking at this thread right now :)

HELLO THERE!!

Well, wow! You started the thread even earlier than I did ahahaha. I tried out for JMSS as a Year 9 student last year, but I didn't get in. I'll still try to help you guys prepare for it. Rn, since I'm quite busy, I won't look for the resources for you just yet. However, I suggest you to take a good read of this thread, the one that I created nearly at the end of the year: https://atarnotes.com/forum/index.php?topic=175526.0

Cheers!

From mi-xao-14. : D

Great to have you around! How are you feeling about the test this far out? It will be great to post back here regularly to keep track of how you're going. :)

For anyone trying out next year. The science reasoning is unexpected. This year it was like interpreting tables and more reasoning than general science itself.

True, but some components do relate to some stuff you would learn at school

I was thinking that a good activity to practice for maths/numerical is to do speedy calculation drills with add/subtract/multiplication/division/fraction/decimals etc under timed conditions?? Maybe just to help a little bit with the speed - can get you extra points in case you run out of time?

I believe for maths, all you need is just a textbook.
Numerical reasoning is just doing some more puzzles, etc.

I'm also thinking that for science reasoning, perhaps learning how to read different types of graphs etc.

But for science writing, in the info-style one, I think that the tests are testing concepts. From what I read in the forums, they are trying to test "ability" or "potential" thus why - science reasoning etc.

Idk, just a thought.  :)

For maths y10 Maths book prob (If you haven't learnt trig/func/bearings)

There weren't that many diagrams this year tho... (they were quite simple as well)

Hey guys!
I tried out for JMSS this year and I got in (all gasp)

If you ever need a hand with anything, feel free to pm me, we can arrange chats on insta or discord if you want.

I'll probs add to this thread a bit later in the year, but for now, happy studying! The earlier you start, the easier it'll be in the long run (take it from someone who knows, sobbing in the library bathrooms from stress overload the last few weeks really wasn't the ideal condition for my mental health lmao)

Sup Guys,
I also tried for JMSS in 2019 and guess what! : ??? ??? I got in!!!! ;D ;D ;D
It was a highly selective process and I finally succeeded.
My tip to prepare is to make a strategy to answer questions quickly and then ally it into the test (obviously ::) ::)) I also recommend like what Pary said is to study about one year earlier and just do it light. (I did this) and then like before 2-3 week of the test pick up the pace and study more for the test. Otherwise, study concepts throughly and revise constantly (Like review what you learn in that week with a science and maths test). Also this is very important. DO NOT THINK IT IS OKAY TO SLACK ON YOUR REGULAR TESTS as it will reflect on you for the interview. Otherwise, start collecting certificates and participate more to have a better interview outcome. (I practiced public speaking which is useful for life).
I'll probably come on later when this thread is gaining momentum but until then,
CIAO !!!! ;) ;) ;) ;)
I'm also on the Discord server

2019 JMSS program

Expression of interest:

Knowing the struggle of preparing for the JMSS selective entry process first-hand, following the initiation of the 2019, myself and a colleague will be opening a series of classes held weekly to prepare prospective students for their JMSS entrance exam.

Both my colleague and I have extensive tutoring experience over the past 3 years, in particular with JMSS preparation. Previously our lessons have been held privately, but starting next year, we are excited to announce we will be opening a class!

Our class will cover the requirements for the entrance exam - including a series of 8 theory classes (overall 8 hours of Mathematics and 8 hours of Science), accompanied by 5 lessons of practical exams - written by us which will closely mirror what is expected on the exam as we write and alter our exams accordingly to the feedback of our students - this makes a total of 13 lessons (13 weeks) and is expected to run from February through to late April/early May.

After the conclusion of the classes, we will hold a series of complementary classes, which includes one revision class and 2 weeks of individual feedback, giving our students 1-2 weeks break before their JMSS entrance exam.

Classes will only be taught by JMSS alumni or current students, and are held in small numbers to ensure close attention is provided for each student - hence spots are strictly limited. This is our first year of opening a class so we would like to experiment with the number of students, but we are looking at no more than 10 students per class.

Additionally, unlike other preparative tuition courses, we also provide interview-stage guidance and mock interviews, which is often a neglected but integral attribute of the JMSS selection process that is a key to the acceptance of applicants! The interview process will allow students to be directly involved with current JMSS students to obtain the most accurate and helpful information, as well as engaging students in an environment which would best reflect the actual JMSS interview.

Duration & Fees:

Theory: 2.25 hours - $50
Mock Exam: 3.00 hours - $50
Mock Interview: Time Unknown: including class lesson and individual interview - Free for theory class or $50 new students

Location: Springvale, Glen Waverley (tentative; may change accordingly to studentsí convenience)
Time: Weekday - after school, Saturdays - afternoons, time (tentative, we have a location and time in mind, but would like feedback from parents and students to make our classes as convenient as possible)

If you would like to secure your spot, please email [email protected] with the following details:

Name:
School:
Suburb: (that is best for you to access for lessons, eg. Springvale)
Guardianís Contact Number:
Best mode of contact & Contact Details:

Additionally, contact us via email if you have any questions, we will try our best to response as fast as possible.

Hi guys I am doing MHS exam and John monash exam this year. Does anyone have any websites I can use for both tests. I havent found any other websites than the Department of Education ones. I tried for MHS and didnt get in :(. I think my hendersons results made me to cocky and I didnt prepare anymore after that. I think I need to focus a lot on science because it is one of  my weaknesses :(
