Recommendations for year 10?

So... maybe this is perhaps a bit early to discuss, but do you guys recommend doing 2 subjects (Methods and Biology) for year 10? I've had plenty of tuition of Math Methods, so that is a subject that I undoubtedly want to take next year. However, would you people recommend doing Biology, given that I know it's not going to be in my top 6 and show little to no interest towards the subject? ( I show very little interest towards most other subjects too)

Hey GMT! Welcome to the forums.

I'm a Year 9, and I'm undertaking Biology and Methods next year, just as you're suggesting. I don't really see the point in doing Bio if you don't want to; do you have any other subjects in mind?

Welcome to ATAR Notes, GMT. Great to have you here! :)

Just to clarify, are you talking about doing Methods and Bio 3/4 in Year 10?

No not really, I just want to do 2 in Year Ten in the unfortunate event where I am denied an entry into UMEP Mathematics so I could alleviate and focus more on the other four subjects.

Well from what I've seen, finishing 2 3/4's in Year 11 (which is what I'm assuming you want to do) is encouraged and will help in the future as you said; reducing you're workload.

Now the problem is Biology. I think you won't do too well if you don't like the subject, but I suppose sometimes the motivation to do well is enough. Anyway, do have any idea about your plans after school, in uni. That could give us a better idea about another subject to pick instead of bio.

Hi there!
According to my friends who do bio, they have a test/SAC very frequently. There's so much content to cover and biology scales down (like psychology, I think). Taking this into account, if you don't like it, there's really no point in doing it as it will definitely stress you out and detract you from doing well from your other subjects.

I'll give you some general advice for choosing subjects. Remember you will need to balance them out, and SACs can build up in the year making you focus on certain subjects more so make sure you ask around to know how much work needs to go into the subject and if it's worth it. For example, I do art and content wise, it's pretty easy to study for (if you're a good English student) but I have to put so much effort in my folio. However, because I see it as a relaxing thing, it doesn't hinder me in my other subjects.

I wish you luck in your subject choices! Definitely a good idea to study methods in year 10, I wish my school offered it. I regret doing it this year because it's making me lose focus on my other subjects a bit, hahaha.

Thanks for the advise Kiki! However, I was wondering, what if I invest in a tutor for bio next year? (going to have 6 regardless if I'm going to get one for bio) Would the 1st rate spoon feeds in Bio help me do well?

Wrong. Bio scales up ~1.

No problem! :) I honestly don't know but I don't recommend you do it. I think it's a huge waste of money and time. I think it's better for you to have a study period instead and start early preparation for your future 1/2 and 3/4 subjects on your own. If bio goes in the last 6, for example, if you get 99.00, and you do really poorly in bio, it'll just become 99.10 - doesn't really make a difference.

Plus (I'm assuming you have a teacher who wants the best in you) because your bio teacher would most likely be pushing you and guilting you in your subject, you'll probbaly be forced to focus on it and 'pretend' to do well. Then, most likely, your top our subjects would be affected. I think it's better for you to focus on aiming for 50 for the subjects you like the most rather than just cruising through a subject you don't like.

Hope that helps!

Edit: Oh, thanks Sconey! I think I was looking at the older scalings, it was a while back. Thanks for correcting me!

I am a student that has finished three subjects early however am currently undertaking four subjects. One of which is Biology, which has particularly perked in my interest. I remember in year 11 I did not enjoy Biology that much however I hung in the mix and now it is probably my second best subject behind business management. I mean if you absolutely hate it then by all means drop it, because not only will it waste your time but you will constantly despise going to class *cough* specialist. However, before dropping out I would recommend considering your future plans because it can very much be a pre - req and something you need. Either way good luck!! ;)

Hey! I'm currently doing Bio and Methods 3/4 in Year 11 (which is what I assume you want to do)
Bio is an awesome subject (at least for me!) It is easily my favourite subject, and I did Unit 1 in Year 10, but didn't love it, I think partly because of the teacher. I reckon give it a go, or at least read the study design to see if it interests you. If you find that it doesn't interest you, however, I probably wouldn't recommend doing it, as I know some people who don't like the subject and hate studying for it.
As for tutoring, I do get tutored for Bio, but I 100% think its unnecessary, especially if you have a good teacher. For 1/2, you definitely don't need it, but if you're finding concepts hard to understand, then give it a go.

Methods 3/4 in Year 11 isn't to difficult, especially if you are good at maths and are getting tutored. Methods is basically just maths you've been doing you're whole life, but learning to apply it a little more. I would recommend doing Methods in Year 11 as you have much more time to dedicate to it, and will probably do better in it.
