hey guys,

I just got 42% similarity on turnitin for the first time, however, it highlighted my entire reference list and phrases like 'the world', 'global climate change', 'the rural poor' and quotes from papers (which were cited properly). I've never had such a high score though so I'm worried.

Am I fucked? Obviously this doesn't sound like legit plagiarism and when you see the paper it isn't but I'm paranoid

Not sure what UoM policy is tbh but this sort of thing isn't entirely uncommon (I had an assignment once that mandated the cover page be included in the Turnitin report, and we were then asked why results were so high lol). Did much get highlighted apart from what you've noted above?
One wug.

Not really, but there was a sentence where I talked about the predicted world population in 2050 that said I took it from a source Iíve never even seen lol

I suppose I used a lot of common phrases
There were sections that werenít highlighted at all so surely that shows my work was original?

Don't stress, they hardly ever check similarity (unless it's like 50% or more) and if you're discussing a common topic, then your'e bound to have a high similarity.

Say I got an 82.60 overall on all my assessments (by the coordinators method), would this get rounded up or down (assuming no scaling is occurring)?

Pretty sure the rule is up unless it's on a grade border.

Has anyone done UNIB2008: Drugs That Shape Society? There aren't too many reviews on that subject at the moment

Anyone have applied for jobs with a bachelor of science (engineering) ? or is that impossible. I've given up on postgrad study and wish to get into the workforce as soon as possible preferably technical positions in banks. Would a bachelors be sufficient ?

Yeah it's absolutely possible, know plenty of friends with just a BSci who've secured top-tier jobs.

What is more important is your WAM (65+ min, 70+ for a reasonably competitive app) and your ECs (extra-curriculars that you've pursued in uni). Also existing work experience is an added bonus

Thank you!, what kind of jobs did they apply for ? Obviously Engineering jobs are out of the question right?

No, I know the odd one or two who managed to land engineering jobs, albeit we're talking easily 90+ WAM here and rockstar performers, the vast majority would have studied their masters.
Other options include Big 4 banks, Big 4 accounting firms, management consulting, investment banking...

With a science degree these days the world really is your oyster

Not really imo. A BSc by itself is pretty useless for most of the part...

I think he meant a bachelor of science + decent wam + relevant work experience/extra curricular can land you a decent job. But for engineering job you generally need postgraduate.

Can you elaborate on this? And would you think a bachelor of engineering at Monash would be sufficient for an engineering job or do people generally have to do a masters?

I think Monash is fine as long as you got the engineering accreditation from your degree. But I know for Melbourne you need the Masters to get your accreditation.Bachelor of Science (major in electrical/civil/mechanical) etc, is generally insufficient .
