I think Methods will probably be my 7th subject, so I'm not too fussed. As long as I pass :)

xD at this time in the year last year, I had no goals for Methods; I would have been happy if a 40 was handed to me right then without any work.
Title: Re: Maths Methods Roll Call 2010
Post by: Ilovemathsmeth on January 12, 2010, 01:01:12 pm
Really? I thought you were aiming for 50 throughout the year.

During year 10 I did 1/2 so I was aiming for high 40s throughout that year.

When I began 3/4 I really wanted 50. :P
Title: Re: Maths Methods Roll Call 2010
Post by: kyzoo on January 12, 2010, 01:11:08 pm
I didn't do 1/2, skipped straight into 3/4, so I was ignorant about the difficulty of Methods until February last year. And I only really started aiming for 50 in the last 2 weeks, before then I wasn't aiming for any score.

You're really amazing to have got 48 raw without doing 1/2. You must have worked A LOT to catch up on Unit 1 and 2 concepts. And that's smart - to not aim the entire year, just in last 2 weeks. You put less pressure on yourself :)

I'm in methods too.... i dont think ill be able to get anywhere near as high as you guys...... so my aim is 35+

Our school had a whole class of Y11s doing 3/4 without doing 1/2, and in general they got higher scores than the Y12's, so I'm not really that amazing =/

And to be honest I was aiming more full marks rather than 50, I only started thinking about scores after the exams.

I dunno >.<

My friend came up with this hypothesis, that because the number 1 SAC guy at our school ended up only getting low 40's, he pulled the whole cohort's SSs down. I wonder if such a notion is valid.

I'm not sure, I think that the highest SAC mark is linked with the highest exam mark during moderation. That doesn't make sense in your case (nor in my school's case this year) as the highest SAC mark student wasn't awarded the highest study score.

Going by your assumption that the highest SAC mark is linked with the highest exam mark, I don't see why the highest internally ranked student would necessarily get the highest study score.

That is correct.  The  highest SAC mark is linked with the highest exam mark.

It may have a little, because the person raked 1st will get the best SAC mark out of the whole cohort, unless two people got the same top exam mark, then the two top ranked SAC students would have got the best moderated SAC marks.

Are you taking into account the year 12 students at your school kyzoo, because they would have been apart of your cohort, and I pretty certain there was at least one 50 (if not more) in methods from your school last year.

=/ I have no idea about Y12s, all I know is that this person I am referring to got 98+ total for SACs which is high for our school considering many of our better students lost 2 or more marks (out of total 100 allocated to SACs) on the 2nd SAC.

That would make no sense, given that this year's results on the whole ranked as one of MGS' better years.

Okay, but the cohort refers to everyone in an entire school or institution who takes a specific subject in the same year, so although he may have been ranked highest in your class, he may not have necessarily been ranked the highest in the cohort.

And judging by the fact that others from your school did get 50's, I would say he wasn't ranked 1st for SAC's in your cohort.

EZ: haha I have so far been totally unable to exhibit a holistic approach in perceiving school performance.

stonecold: it's true that he may not have necessarily been ranked the highest, but traditionally the 50 come from this class. So please excuse me for being unable to adopt an egalitarian view due to a perception stained by sense of tradition.

It amuses me how the elite private schools can complain about poor cohort.

Perhaps, again I have been unable to exhibit a holistic perception.

lol true.  i've said this before but there is a big difference being ranked say 5th in a good private school compared to being ranked 5th in most public schools.

This is purely because the 5th best exam mark at a private school is clearly going to be much higher than the 5th best exam mark at most public schools.

10 marks lost last year would yield ~41-43 assuming high SAC ranking. I myself lost 10.5 marks with top SAC ranking and achieved 42 raw. But last years exams were easier than a 'normal' years, this can be seen by the significant rise in the A+ cut off of exam 2: 69.5/80, compared to ~65/80. So in a 'normal' year 40 could be achieved with ~15 marks lost (105/120) which is 87.5% assuming top SAC ranking.

just rank 1, so if you need to get 100% to beat everyone else, then yeah lol.

If you are not first in SAC rank and loose around 10-15 marks on the exam, what RAW can be obtained?

I know for a fact I am not getting first on SAC lol.

Then it's all dependent on the strength of your cohort. I think 40+ is still likely, though if you have a horrible cohort, then maybe 38 or so as the lowest.

oh ok thanks:)
i would never not be top of SACs though.
the idea of doing further and aiming for 47+ and letting methods be my 7th subject is starting to sound like a much better idea... hah

I guess methods is just about not making careless mistakes. I wish it was based on mathematical ability, but alas, what to do.

I guess methods is just about not making careless mistakes. I wish it was based on mathematical ability, but alas, what to do.
All except two of the marks I lost were due to careless errors.
Here's some advice:

-Always read the WHOLE question twice. As stupid as it may sound I missed a whole sentence, which cost me two marks.

-If you have second thoughts about a question, go through the question again, check it over from the start.
Several of the errors I made I had thoughts about, though I didn't check the questions again, which led to many of the marks I lost(~7)

One example, for a probability question I misunderstood, I noticed how I had to turn the page to get a probability value, something I didn't recall doing in any previous VCAA exam. I didn't follow my thought further and as a result I lost two marks, I had used the wrong probability.

Don't oversimplify. I lost another mark for making an error when simplifying past requirement.

When checking a question, reevaluate any calculator computations. I lost a further two marks through reading a value incorrectly off my calculator. When checking I didn't redo the equation on the calculator, as it was too easy.

When asked to 'show' something simple, write lots, make sure there is no doubt in the mind of the examiner you understand it. If you don't yet know, a 'show' question is one where the answer has been given and all marks are awarded for working or proving the given result. I lost a bloody half mark because one examiner thought I hadn't shown a simple ratio well enough.  :knuppel2:

Don't get caught by multiple choice questions, many have little tricks, either in the wording or in some of the answers. I wrongly read a MC question as: 'Which of the following IS a property of...?'. Where it actually asked: 'Which of the following is NOT a property of...?', costing me yet another mark.

Here's one I caught during the exam (finally :P ). I wrongly figured the gradient of a chord as: , luckily I picked up on it before the end, I was looking for errors after this stage for quite a while until I finally decided to check this... I felt pretty stupid :buck2: Though a lot less stupid than finding out AFTER the exam.... it's like death.

I've pretty much covered all the careless errors I know of on my own. :buck2:

Aim for 50, not just scraping in the 40+ range (losing 10-15 marks), then you know you tried your best and have no regrets :)
I tend to aim lower so I never disappoint ymself...probably not the best tactic though. (Subconsciously, I think I aim higher than what I say (in anything I do) though.)

Aim for 50, not just scraping in the 40+ range (losing 10-15 marks), then you know you tried your best and have no regrets :)

0.o I never aimed for any score, didn't care about SS at all until after exams

As for question interpretation, what I did was to hold my pacer under the words as I read the problem. This way I never missed a word. Then I would underline any significant question conditions, draw out an arrow originating from the wording, and rewrite that significant condition in a summarized form. Seeing as though I've gone down from 3+ careless mistakes per test at the start of the year, to 1 per test/exam at the very most towards the year's end, it works.

Title: Re: Maths Methods Roll Call 2010
Post by: stonecold on January 25, 2010, 12:47:24 am
a pacer is one of those pencils that you refill with leads and you don't have to sharpen.

can you explain your technique a little more kyzoo.
i am very interested.

Ok the picture attached is a visual supplement to my explanation.

There's a picture of a pacer in response to vexx's question.

Now consider those lines of "aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa" as the exam problem wording. Those red lines represent the space over which I will hover the pacer over.

...

Edit: Lol I'll go ahead and provide a visual explanation to the whole technique

Lol you don't need a pacer, a pen works the same. I just prefer using pacers in exams.

ohhhh i get it, your annotations are just for important information that you wont have to re-read the paragraph for. thanks for showing that. i'm so gonna test it out in tests and things!

Err I guess it could be used for that, never thought it that way =/. My purpose for doing things this way is to I actively "capture" everything on the first read, so that's it's very improbable that my mind "slips over" critical wording.
Title: Re: Maths Methods Roll Call 2010
Post by: stonecold on January 25, 2010, 01:57:35 am
do you find it wastes time though?

i agree that is would definitely work, as you are making a summary of all the key information and filtering out all of the crap, but i can just picture myself wasting so much time doing this.  but then again if it eliminates stupid errors (like the ones i made on my further exam)  then it will be worth it.  i am deffs going to try it out. :)

Hey stonecold how many marks did you lose in the further exam?
Title: Re: Maths Methods Roll Call 2010
Post by: kyzoo on January 25, 2010, 02:18:00 am
Nah doesn't waste time, I go through and slide my pacer over the sentences, and make annotations fairly swiftly. Even if it is slower than the generic reading technique, the "capturing factor" of my technique more than makes up for it.

Checking the whole question and your answer carefully after completing wastes more time than doing this (I know from taking 1 hr 50 mins to finish Methods Exam 2 lol).

And the 2 marks I lost on the Methods exam poses another exam technique problem I'm trying to solve - how do I ensure that if the information I need to answer a question is located on another page, that the probability of incorrectly transcribing the required information is eliminated.

aww shit, you are so right. i do this all this time.  i look at the wrong thing or just copy the wrong thing out and then everything just turns to shit.  ill try and help you think of something, but really all i guess you can do is go back and check that you copied it correctly.

@ blakhitman

I lost 2 marks in total, 1 on each exam.

pencil is the way to go with maths IMO, i would be using pencil in chem if i could. Pencil is so much better, you don't wanna make ur paper look all messy if you screw up "part a" of a question and have to go crossing out everything up to "part f" and have to squish everything up cos you've run out of room.

actually, my post befor last made me think of something.

Say you make a stupid error in part a that affects the rest of the question.
You do the entire problem, then realise your mistake.
You correct the orginla mistake.
Do you then have to go make correct all subsquent affected anwsers?

I know that i you didn't know you make the mistake in part a, you would get consequential marks for the rest
But if you have corrected the orginal mistake, can you leave the rest and still get full marks?

i hope that makes sense:S

actually, my post befor last made me think of something.

Well probably not, coz the examiner wouldn't know you got the first bit wrong and would have no idea why the rest were wrong, thus marking part b WRONG and maybe the rest right.
So, I suggest you don't try it :P

Nah, if they gave consequential marks then I would have lost 1.5 marks for Methods exam instead of 2.5. Also, there was a kid at our school who lost 9 marks or so for incorrectly transcribing formulas; our school requested an examination of his paper and they found that VCAA didn't give consequential marks at all even though his method was correct, and all he had done was use the incorrect formula.

I think it works like this - in each question you get a single mark allocated to the answer. If the answer is wrong, then you will lose that mark, regardless of correct method or the fact that it is a consequential error.

I'm doing methods 3/4 nxt yr but im aiming for a 50 too :) is that hard to get?

1) if you're good enouhg to do umep, plz don't do further, it defeats the point of further. Further is not there for ppl to get 50's in when they clearly are capable of much higher level maths. And remember, only two maths subject can count in your top 4 anyway.

2) If you are really that good at maths, ie good eoungh to do umep, a 50 is not THAT hard to get as it comes down to carless errors. I reakon careless errors are the only thing that seperates most of the epople 45+. I know i knew the methods course backwards and careless marks were the only thinkg holding me back. If you are serious about getting a 50, not only do you need to do every single paper you can get your hand on, but be anal and tripple check evey single thing you write, even the things you thinka are wayyy to easy, like for instance, i misremebered a simple formula(finding varience, i frogot to square teh mean), that was even on the formula sheet and that cost me 2 marks on the exam. I had used it so many times before, i even remebe checking it and just letting it slip by. It's much better to do eveything correctly once, cos when you check over questions, it's easy to convice yourself your've alredy got it all right.

it's a bit more than that, about 40 people got 50 in methods (3/4 cas and normal combined) so depends which methods your doing, i think cas is more popular this year

That would be about right. The approximately 8000 students I had was from the 2009 grade distribution for the non-CAS methods. Since the non-CAS course has been removed, all students will now be doing CAS methods.

Last year 8887 students did non-CAS methods while 7189 students did the CAS methods which means about 16000 students will be doing CAS methods this year?

0.02% of this cohort would be about 32 students.

16/8000 or 32/16000...same odds :D

oh sorry i didn't realise it was completely dropped, yeahh last year there was almost 40, so there'd be about the same getting 50 this year (maybe more, or maybe less)

also the number of people who get 50 is about 0.098% and not 0.02, so quite a few people extra! http://vcenotes.com/forum/index.php/topic,21207.15.html

LOL and that's exactly what I thought. A 50 in Further is not easy to get, it does depend on whether or not you are meticulous. Making mistakes in exams is almost inevitable :P

But yes I agree with you, my biggest regret in VCE is perhaps not doing Specialist. Not for the scaling, but because it seems like a great subject (doing Calc 1 the Uni version of it) and I can easily say it's my favourite subject =D

lol, Dr He loves his examples of past students......  i remember that example and how he said thet guy re did methods in eyar 12 and stil lonly got like.... 46 or soemthing. The Dr would say how his own daughter who is "not gifted in math" *cough* got a 47 ro seomthing

Lol, I remember him talking about his 'mathematician' rank in Australia and the world :P
I think it was a comparison between local maxima and absolute maxima :D

lol a ll the spech level 5 challenge class stayed behin after on our last class and he talked for ages about his phd and explaned what all the symbols of his banner mean (if you've done dr he you'll know what i'm talking about)
I'm really interested in Dr He, do you know which area of mathematics he got his PhD in?

"As a mathematician, Dr He carried out his research in the area of spectral methods for nonlinear wave equations."

i'm gonna be honest and say i pretty much understood close to zero abotu what he was saying when he was talking abotu his phd. As far as i could tell it was soemthing to do with waves and differential equations.... not sure if that mean more to you than:

"As a mathematician, Dr He carried out his research in the area of spectral methods for nonlinear wave equations."

=XXX Was this morning session? I wasn't there =( And what banner?

this bloke , not dropped a sac mark
previous winner of Melbourne UNi competiitio
Ranked second in australia for chemistry (chemistry olympiad exam NQE)
Ranked 1 in biology in australia (biology olympiad NQE)
medal in pretty much all of of his Westpacs
Medal in chemistry national quix,

IF there is anyone, on this site, that will get a 50 in methods this year its him.

It's VCE maths.

That is all.

TT makes a great point

Haha nice, yeah if you're gonna be doing waves you'll be in DE heaven... lol

haha same.

I lost 2 on exam 2...On the most retarded things, oh well, I'm gonna do 2009 later today and I better get full marks lol.

I lost marks on even more retarded things.  I'm just finishing the marking now.  If the question asked for intercepts, does that mean the answers need to be given as coordinates.  I always thought for intercepts, you just give the relevant x or y value... ?

Anyway, my dumb mistakes.  Q4.  Choosing the matrix in the wrong order.  That is a bloody further question and I still stuffed it.  >:(

Q11, didn't even think to solve it in the CAS.  Dumb 10 second question took me like 3 mins and I still stuffed it.

And in Extended response, Q1 part b.i., stupidly made the mistake mentioned in the examiners report of solving cos(x)=1/2 and forgetting the domain was [0.2pi], so gave positive and negative pi/3.  If we're not doing consequentials, then that cost me 3 marks in total.

These mistakes are really pissing me off.  Knew how to do the whole paper, yet still lost 5 marks.  How do you improve damn it....!

Well, I guess noting down your mistakes in the magical error book will help improve them.

About the intercepts, I always thought you needed to put coordinates, but I could be wrong.

EDIT: lol at Q11 mistake. I'm constantly holding my CAS on multi-choice :P

Yeah, definitely put them in :).  I am more annoyed about the Q4 mistake tbh.  I was doing those sorts of questions last year all the time.  How could I forget to check that the [x,y,z] column matrix was on the wrong side.  Damn frustrating!

hmm, maybe try going through exams slower? That's my plan of action for upcoming papers I do.

I solved the equation of the parabola wrong on the CAS for Q3 ><.

Nahh, I am already too slow.  I only finished that with 5 mins to spare.

You know how to find the equation of a graph in the N-spire?  If that is what you've got, i'll tell you. :)

just go to list and spreadsheets, type your x coords in the left column and the y coords in the next column.
highlight both columns, then go menu, stats, stat calc, and choose the type of regression you want.  for that question, you would have needed quadratic regression.

was there a three by three matrix eqaution?

Also,
Does anyone know if all that 1/2 probablity stuff, like permutation and combinations questions can be examined?

Btw, how long do you guys take to finish each exam, I take around 30-40 for exam 1, and 1.15, and 1.40 for exam 2 depending on how quickly i can rattle off the multiple choice, I HATE MULTIPLE CHOICE.

cheers,

I'm aiming for a 42+ in Methods !

ilovemathsmeth, if you love Maths so much, why didn't you do specialist for vce? :O

Didn't do it because I didn't want to do a LOTE and Spesh in the same year. But I dropped my LOTE so ended up with neither. In the end I covered the Spesh stuff in Calc 1, wasn't too bad, I loved it :)

I think SACs matter when you're looking at high 40s.

I dunno >.<

My friend came up with this hypothesis, that because the number 1 SAC guy at our school ended up only getting low 40's, he pulled the whole cohort's SSs down. I wonder if such a notion is valid.

It's definitely true. A couple of the teachers at my school are exam markers and they've said that scores do get moderated against the person with the highest sac ranking. Obviously it would be ridiculously unfair if the top person got a C on the exam and everyone else was pushed down below his mark. But in general because internal sacs aren't standardised VCAA tends to moderate the study scores according to the performance of students in the exam - it's simply an assumption that if a high scoring student flunks the exam, the internal assessments must be too lenient.
Something like that?
Anyway, pressure's on for those top students. I'll smack them if they do badly :)

maths methods is alot like mexican history it doesn't make sense but at the same time it follows a pattern. i may even wear a mexican wrestling mask to the exam.........i believe that if before the exam we can channel our solar energy and inner mexican we can all enjoy a burrito infused lunch
