Hello.

Does anyone have any resources that are useful and up to date to prepare? I lost hope that I'd get in and unfortunately didn't prepare at all :(

Probably don't tell them that you think you don't deserve it :p

You shouldn't have any trouble finding examples of past questions around the place, although we can't share them here. Then just practising these with friends is a really good way to go about things. I think if you can string a sentence together and clearly step people through your decision making, you'll be fine.

I believe Monash offers interviews for UMAT scores as low as 60.

How often do people with UMATs that low get in? You'd have to perform pretty spectacularly in the interview to actually get in right? I read forums titled
"Will I get an interview/offer  with this UMAT/ATAR" approaching exams and they seemed to make it clear that you'd need 99+ Atar AND 90+ Umat to even have a chance at getting an interview.

I got a 97.1 and have SEAS for non-english speaking background which should take me up to a 98.1 and a 86 UMAT. No word of an email yet :(

No one can say with certainty one way or another whether that someone with an ‘lower’ UMATs will or wont’s get in due to the variability of the process.

However it is safe to say that for a domestic student without any sort of SEAS/rural anything a UMAT at that ‘lower’ end is going to make it harder - so shining at interview is super important. Monash is casting its net to ‘lower’ UMATs because they obviously are interested in how students who aren’t necessarily ‘top’ perform in the interview situation - they don’t do it because it’s fun interviewing students. Preparation is critical though - the number of students I heard after the interview talking about how they had no idea about the process and etc. - made me feel sorry for them because if they had only realised they might have performed better

Does SEAS help compensate for a lower UMAT? How so?

How did you calculate how much your atar will increase by?

I should clarify that SEAS obviously affects your ATAR not UMAT (is in your UMAT is not adjusted because of SEAS) but SEAS affects UMAT in the sense that rural kids often can get in with UMATs relative to ‘city kids’ - and these rural kids will probably qualify for SEAS due to their rural status. Same with Indigenous. This is not saying that rural students all have lower UMATs, just that if they did they still have a fair chance of getting in. I know a number of rural students with UMATs in the 60 range.

I think probably the lesson of all of this is that the process for medical selection is quite complicated. You could probably consider yourself on the lower end of things, so interview performance will be important. It goes without saying though tha tyour best chance of getting into med straight out of high school is to do well on the interview. So irrespective of what advice you get here about the nitty gritties, I think the practical consequence of all of it is fairly clear: you're gonna have to prepare well for interview.
