Title: GAT Solutions
Post by: Sinanator on June 14, 2012, 12:21:34 pm
Post up the answers you found to the multiple choice questions, and what you wrote about in your persuasive essay.

As I don't care about the humanities questions, I only answered half the MC. My solutions (confident about most) are as follows:
5. D
6. A
7. D
8. B

13. C
14. C
15. A
16. D
17. C

21. B
22. D
23. C
24. B

29. D
30. A
31. A
32. B
33. A

37. B
38. B
39. B

44. C
45. B
46. D
47. A
48. C
49. C
50. B
51. C
52. C

56. B
57. A
58. B
59. D
60. A
61. D
62. D
63. B

Question 8 asks which is most likely so I put A, that's guaranteed to be higher than 4 for plant grade. Question 17 is definitely A. 31 I got wrong, just checked. 38 is C. 39 I wrote D, probs wrong. 48 got D. 50 got A, that was a guesstimate. 62 got B, thought I circled C.                                                      EDIT: Answer to 17 was 100, didn't find total.

Haha same here. A poor GAT performance doesn't bring down study score does it? (I don't think it does, but just wanted to clarify.)

Nope, everyone at my school left early because there were free coke and a sausage sizzle. That was a bad decision by the school because everyone left ASAP.

The only good thing about the GAT is the facebook groups afterwards and I don't think there was anything odd enough this time around for there to be any funny ones.

At least you guys could leave early! - many students, including myself, sat there bored for an hour. Although I did draw quite a nice drawing on my answer book I must say  8)

I did laugh when I saw the plants were called Terra and Nova (obviously taking from Terra Nova series).

Facebook group of the social media question. "is it likely that Facebook and Twitter will become redundant, like letter-writing?".

My goal is to get the VCE cert and subsequently all I care about is passing english. My writing went on forever. I was just spitballing. Hopefully some of it was gold.

As for multiple choice, my answers: D, BBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBB          I love the letter B!

I'm not an etymologist or anything, but I assumed Terra and Nova had something to do with the Latin (correct me if I'm wrong) derivatives.

For Q8 I said B, because in the case of A, Leaf Drop of 527 still fills the requirements for the question.

17 should be C. I calculated all of them, and with option C you have 2 white tiles left over, whereas with D there aren't enough white tiles to go all the way around. I may have made an error though.

Yes, question 38 is C. I misread the question. To think they even bolded the "not" LMFAO.

39 should be B. I did read that question correctly. :P

48 I said RST and R'S'T' because that would be the middle part of the potholder. Not sure, just used logic for that. :s

Question 50 says "general assumption" so I just looked at the linear part of the graph.

Golden, with question 60, if 7 and 8 were malfunctioning, 6 would not work correctly as it is 'powered' so to speak, by 9.

For 61 I assumed that as component 2 is faulty, there will be no transfer to component 9, which won't transfer to 10, which will fail to transfer to 17. That being said, component 18 may function with just the 'supply' from component 13. I solved 62 before solving this, so I used the logic I used there.

As for 62, it's either component 9 or 10, I said 10 as if component 9 is faulty, it will effect component 18.

For everything else, I went C all the way. And I think I got a lot right, lmfao.

And Vegemite, inb4 mods. :P

Terra Nova made me instantly think of the TV show. Maths will be alright but the Humanities which counts for me is questionable.

I'm only doing Texts, and because it's such a diverse topic, they can't put it in the GAT. English teacher was fuming when we all left in the first 60-90 minutes. I wrote 2 good essays though. -.-

What they do with English is, if the SAC results get put in as A+/A but the average from the school is like 25-30 (standardised) the ask to audit the sacs. I don't think a name should be too important. I just wrote expository, because, I'm not good at writing it but it's piss easy. You'll be fine broseph, don't worry about it.

No offence but that's the stupidest thing I've ever read... pretty sure that awful tv show didn't invent the phrase "terra nova." It's latin for new land. So it's not "obvious" at all. Hush.

I'll be pissed if I don't get 50 for the writing section again this year. I had to ask for another booklet - used both booklets for the second writing task and had one page to spare for the first writing task.

I can't remember my answers except for the picture questions. I chose shadows and light or something (first one) and for the second picture (last two questions), there was desolate and...forgot the other one

Those two questions made me laugh cause it's too subjective in my opinion (reminded me of the Rorschach test)

I'm assuming you got n=8 yeah, which then you square and that is how many BLACK tiles there are. The q askes for the total number of tiles, both black and white, therefore 10^2 tiles. I messed that up too.

The likelihood that you're going to achieve a high mark for a very crude and distasteful piece of writing is quite low (I'm not saying yours is). This is just my opinion and the writing component was very important to me because I needed another 50 in at least one section of the GAT to benefit from the 6.5 aggregate points Monash University gives you towards your ATAR. Apparently my GAT from year 11 doesn't count.

Problem?

It's cute how you desperately want that 6.5 aggregate added, but why not ace your other subjects, get 1 point higher for each study score, and get the 6.5 that way? It's not crude to say that the assessor is "sitting on the couch and watching TV like a lazy prick" because it's true. My English teacher is a GAT assessor, I honestly don't think she's done anything commemorable with her life. On the other hand you have Mahmoud Chatilla who is being presented with an Order of Australia award for running from Melbourne to Sydney.

Care to tell us what 'commemorable' things that you've done with your life? If you haven't done any then don't talk..

In what world does Monash give you a bonus 6.5 aggregate points for getting a GAT score of X?

e, or am I really, really out of touch?

Also, tone it down, less angryposting please.

I incorporated into the 2nd writing task how there's probably a rhino beetle out there that is lifting 850 times its weight right now whilst your just sitting on the couch and watching TV like a lazy prick

That sounds very crude, not sure if I would be impressed if I was your assessor.

You've really come onto this forum on a high and mighty horse.

If I got a 50 for English last year, I should be able to get another 50 on the GAT without too much effort, in my opinion.

If you could get another 6.5 aggregate points that would go towards your ATAR with less effort than required to get another 6.5 aggregate study score points in 4 years, wouldn't you?

Use your brain, my friend. VCE is a competition and you should always try to maximise your ATAR (in my opinion).

I'm on a high and mighty horse? You're the one talking up your brilliant 50 for English in your GAT last year. Also, for me, my ATAR means nothing, so long as it gets me into the course I want. Whether I get 94.5, or 99.95 makes no difference to me.

Also, VCE may be a competition, but the biggest competition is yourself. As a person, you should always aim to be different today, to the person you were yesterday. Not everyone has the ability to get 90+, or 45+ in English, or whatever, but today's persuasive topic was about success, and if you really base success on a 4 digits, then I'd really love to read what you wrote.

It's not misogynistic to make a statement describing a state of being. It's misogynistic to imply that all women are like that, which he didn't do.

Now seriously, for the last time, stop with the derailing. Some people would like to discuss GAT solutions to their MCQs and that's up to them. If you want to have a lol about the GAT, go to the Tips thread.

I did energy, there was no shading but quality was shit so I could be wrong, anatomical detail is definitely wrong and you can't see a human.

Ok guys, I think there is some disagreement about what the GAT is actually used for and MOST of the info given out yesterday regarding the topic was 100% false (trolling), and I thought that everyone seemed to understand that, but apparently that is not the case.

So to avoid further confusion, here's the gist of it:
- Used if you need to get a derived score
- Cohort GAT aids VTAC in the scaling of your SACs
- Used if you are in the MIDDLE BAND in some course in some unis (Monash is one for example), we're not sure what they do if you have a very good GAT, but one does (in some way) aid your admission if you are in the middle band
- The MCQs are mainly used for the science/maths and humanities sections, the written sections are mainly used for English
- You can be reported for writing derogatory comments in your GAT, whether targeted at the examiner, VCAA or anyone else

That's it. I notice that on the previous page there was a fair bit of up-voting and unfortunately, down-voting too. I suspect that is due to a few misconceptions regarding the role of the GAT sparked most likely from the events of yesterday's trolling from a number of users (myself included). Some of you ma have thought that most of what was said was clearly false, however, please show some respect for those who may have misinterpreted it :)

On behalf of he trollers of yesterday, I apologise for any misinformation that may have happened :(

Common FAQs regarding trolling:
Q: Can I troll the GAT?
A: It's up to you, you can do whatever you want, however you might as well do the best you can as you have nothing too lose. If you are doing an English 3/4, I would think twice before writing some random crap in your written sections though.

Q: What is trolling in this case?
A: Don't insult anyone, any company (esp VCAA, VTAC), groups of people (includes genders, occupations, cultures, etc.). Don't swear out of context. Other than that, you should be safe.

Honestly, I rushed it and can't exactly remember what I wrote. If I wrote it now it'd be better than what is on my GAT. Besides my English isn't crash hot but if I get time I'll PM you something.

And what are the consequences, because someone I know wrote "I just sit on a chair, poking girls on facebook to tell them I want to bang them." :s Also my own comment, when I quoted it I took it out of context. I'd like to point out the fact that in my commend that you last replied to, I constantly said that everything contained within it was "in my opinion".

It does not necessarily represent the views of any body other than myself.

I will base my perceived success in VCE based on a four digit number. Call me shallow, call me stupid, I couldn't care less. At the end of the day it's upto me to decide how "successful" I was as that is a very subjective term and is most definitely open to interpretation.

A score that I may consider myself very successful in VCE with may be a mediocre score to someone else.

You completely disregarded my commend about taking advantage of a medium to maximise your ATAR. Despite the fact that you don't care what your ATAR is, as long as you get into your course of choice, wouldn't you try your best to achieve another 6.5 aggregate points? I'm not sure what couse you want to get into, but I think that he higher your ATAR is, the higher your chances of getting into a course are (generally speaking, some courses may be exempt).

In regards to everyone not believing that Monash gives you bonus aggregate points towards your ATAR for getting a 50 on the GAT, I was told this by a teacher at my school (actually he told me that they add 9 aggregate points), and when I consulted with people on this forum, VegemitePi told me that this was in fact true but the increment was 6.5 aggregate points as opposed to 9.

I'm simply passing on information that was given to me from two reliable sources.

I think q23 MC is D.  It didn't say all numbers must be different, so r can be 7 as well.
It says consider 6 different digits at the start so when you find out r>7 you know C is the answer. I was confused for 30 seconds until I realised it said digits and not numbers.
Title: Re: GAT Solutions
Post by: Russ on June 14, 2012, 07:46:11 pm
I did some research:

Monash only cares about your GAT if your ATAR is lower than the ATAR you'd get based on your GAT marks. Getting 50 is not necessary and does not guarantee an increase.
The bonus isn't a cut and dried +6.5, it's any number between +0 and +9 based on how big the difference is
This will have an extremely small impact ("makes little difference") if you're applying for MBBS or any other course that requires a folio/interview etc.

Post by: pi on June 14, 2012, 07:51:40 pm
Just in regards to the discussion and the issue of the aggregate. There was a lot of random trolling by many users yesterday, so here's the story:

What's true: The GAT is used at Monash for those in the Middle Band (and probably for other unis too, not sure) and having a good GAT does help you in you admission into certain courses that use it alongside you ATAR. No-on really knows what specific effect it has, but it has a beneficial effect if your GAT is fairly strong in the sections they are looking for.

What's false: The specific numbers: 9 or 6.5 or whatever else came up yesterday (I think a few users were involved, myself as well, and most of this was false/trolling). It DOES help Middle Band applicants(and there are technicalities as Russ pointed out above), but these numbers are all rumour. This is not the first time I've heard such numbers being thrown around (I even heard 12 at one stage last year lol, and other numbers in previous years), so if you did believe these to be true, just understand now that these numbers are probably not accurate. So, just know that is does help you if you are a middle band applicant with a good GAT.

Again, I'd like to apologise on behalf of all the tollers of yesterday for any misinformation :(

Like i didn't even say Mt Everest is the highest mountain in the world cos it wasn't in the information

Well I did last year and I got a 50 so I'm going to presume that it's alright.

The assessor you had is probably different this year?
You don't get any extra marks for anything off the topic.
You might have gotten it for what you did write. If it was based on the extra material, it was a one off, and maybe the marker this year isn't that lenient.
