I don't mind handwriting notes, just wondering if it's worth shelling out for a laptop

Most people use laptops for uni. It depends on your degree and personal preferences, though. Perhaps you could try just doing them handwritten when you start, and if you find that it's ineffective, then you can fork out some cash?

I lasted a whole semester without a laptop so (at least for me) it isn't

However, I would imagine that if you did a degree which required a lot of online readings and submitting assignments, having a laptop makes life much easier

Ah thanks guys!

I was thinking if it's a health sciences course would it be easier handwriting when it comes to drawing diagrams and stuff

I would say for any department other than Comp Sci/IT, it is definitely handy to have a computer of some sorts. Sure you can handwrite, but the fact is this, there are never any computers publically available (they are always taken).

However, they are definitely not a "must". You can do without them - depending on your study techniques and handwriting skills. Throughout my three year degree, I viewed lecture notes later that day when I got home, and typed my notes from my home computer. If you are going to get a laptop, make sure it's lightweight and easy to transport around (a big heavy laptop in your backpack is a pain in the long term!)

I wouldn't say most people being laptops. It was half, if that. You wouldn't be out of place in a lot of majors for not bringing one to lectures/labs.

I've always been a desktop user, so, it seemed unnecessary to be me to buy a whole other computer i wouldn't use 99% of the time (again, cause, id just use my desktop at home). Survived like this for 5 years and 2 degrees just fine. Just print the lecture slides and write notes on top.

You do definitely need reliable access to a computer but i assume you have a desktop at home or something.

I've dabbled with both handwriting versus laptop and if you're doing subjects that have lots of rote-learning (eg biosciences), laptops are more efficient in my opinion. However if you were to do subs like chem or physics, handwriting is probably better so you can draw structures and write equations etc

I think a laptop will be good for the more content heavy units such as epidemiology, biochem and physiology. Speaking from experience, handwriting is time consuming but useful, as Shenzor mentioned, for the units with diagrams and structures.
