99.95 ATAR??

Hey!
So I'm a year 10 student aiming to get into undergraduate medicine. I couldn't help but become extremely nervous when people told me how hard and rare it is to make it into undergraduate med because you need a 99.9 ATAR. So I was wondering if the following subjects could lead me to get a great ATAR:
• Physics (I'm going to do 3/4 Physics in year 11)
• Chemistry
• Any Humanities subject (In my school it is compulsory to do a humanities for VCE, so I was just wondering which Humanities subjects scale
high?)
•Methods Maths
•Specialist Maths
• English language or English Litratrature(not sure yet)

Would you recommend me to do 2 English? Also, how hard is it to get placement into undergraduate medicine. Do you think good scored in these subjects are good enough to get me a very high ATAR?? As my school is a selective school I have heard that the SATs are EXTREMELY tough, the highest SAT Spec score was 40%! I feel so worried and confused, medicine is my passion and I really need some guidance into it.

Thankyou

wait, who said jmss requires a humanities subject?

also, even if we all get 40% on our sacs, they'll scale up according other school's performances in their sacs and exams.

You don't need to get 99.95 to get into undergrad med.
I've heard of people getting in with ~98 ATARs and even as low as 95 (you just need a good UMAT + interview)

generally 95 is with seas, is it not?

Also want to mention that, if you are required to do a humanities subject, I would highly recommend selecting the one that you think will interest you the most, not the one that scales the best. This is especially important if you don't find the humanities interesting, because it will mean studying for said subject will feel like more of a chore - so the more you enjoy the subject, the more easily you'll find studying for it and therefore, the better your results will be.
I'll also mention (for the record) that if you perform well in a low scaling subject (i.e. high 40s), it's unlikely that it will actually be scaled down, and even if it does, this will most likely only be by 1-2 scores.

If you see yourself as a strong English student, I'd probably recommend that you complete Literature and another English, just because this means you have a backup English for your top 4 (or both could be in your top 4 depending on your performance) - but this is purely my thoughts on the subject.

Also don't undermine the importance of the UMAT and your interview (if applicable) (alongside your ATAR) when it comes to entry into undergraduate medicine.

Lastly, if it's any comfort, I'd say most students hoping to get into medicine feel very similar to how you're feeling - so know that you're not alone :)

Hey, Justanotherhuman. :)

I don't study Med, but I can 100% guarantee that you don't need a 99.9 ATAR to get into undergraduate Medicine.

In terms of subject selection, if those are the subjects you like, then I say go for it! :) I'm pretty sure you're covering the pre-reqs for Med, there. To achieve a 99.95 ATAR (as per thread title), you usually need to study a language and/or Specialist. But I'll just reiterate here that Med entry certainly does not require a 99.90 or 99.95 ATAR. :)

For Monash undergrad med ATAR is only ⅓ of the process to get in. Your UMAT score and interview are equally important.

It also really depends on what school you go to. For high performing private schools you need at least 90th percentile and 99.5 ATAR but for state schools it can be a lot lower. Also if you are at some kind of disadvantage it makes it a lot easier to get in. For instance I heard of someone boarding at Melbourne Grammar but lived in the country so they claimed to be from a rural background and got in with a 94 ATAR and 68th percentile.

The school you go to is irrelevant unless you quality for the Monash Guarantee (through the school you go to). Nothing more is expected from a private school student than someone from a state school that doesn't qualify for Monash Guarantee.

Do they have a maximum quota they can take from each school though?

JMSS won't force you to take a humanities subject. Just the 1/2 of it in year 11 but you can drop it after unit 1. Lot of kids pick up uni extension after they drop their humanities subject.

BTW its SAC and not SAT but yeah you are correct, the spesh sacs are messed up ( kids getting raw 49s in spesh end up with like 50% average on their sacs)
It isn't a big deal though and actually plays to your advantage, the SACS just rank you and trust me.... everyone finds them bloody hard including the math geniuses.

Its hard to get into undergraduate medicine in Victoria, you will really need an star of above 98ish to be competitive coupled with a 85% plus UMAT and a decent interview. I reckon if you aim for a 99 atar and a 90%+ UMAT you should be able to get into Monash pretty confidently since you will just need an average performance for your interview. ( FYI lowest score for an interview that I know off, for 2016, was 72 UMAT and high 97. The person didn't end up getting into the course)

HOWEVER, don't forget the opportunities to study med outside of VIC. I am studying med at UTAS this year :)
- JAMES COOK UNIVERSITY ( No UMAT ) Queensland
- BOND UNIVERSITY ( No UMAT + Its a bit more expensive cause its private ) Queensland
- UNIVERSITY OF TASMANIA ( NO INTERVIEW AND S2 OF UMAT IS WEIGHTED MORE, very difficult to get into for interstate students) Tasmania
- ADELAIDE UNIVERSITY ( they have a strict 50/50/50 rule for UMAT ) South Australia
- UNIVERSITY OF NEWCASTLE AND UNIVERSITY OF NEW ENGLAND ( They weigh S1 more in the UMAT and I believe they may rank you based on S1 but not 100% sure ) New South Whales
- UNSW ( btw the interviews for this UNI are friggin intense :o , very hard to get in ) New South Whales
- FLINDERS UNIVERSITY South Australia
- CURTIN UNIVERSITY ( Very new university and I hear its easier to get into but not 100% sure ) Western Australia
- CHARLES STUART UNIVERSITY ( I don't know much about this one ) Northern Territory

As you can see all the universities are difficult to get into HOWEVER, there are a lot of alternative pathways into medicine such as:
- UTAS guaranteed pathway - Only 10- 20 people get this, essentially you do 3 years of medical research at UTAS then have a spot reserved for you in the medical cohort after you finish your degree.
- Do the GAMSAT
- Be in the top 50 students of the Monash Biomedicine cohort
