Study Design Changes

Hi all :)

Just wondering if anyone could tell me what is changing with the new study design? Also, is it likely that there will be many changes to the sacs within schools?

Thanks!

Here's VCAA's summary of changes to the SD http://www.vcaa.vic.edu.au/Documents/vce/biology/Summary_of_changes_Biology.doc

- Most areas of study have been expanded with some new topics
- The 'inheritance' dot point under the old Unit 4 AoS1 is gone. Seems to mean Mendellian crosses, patterns of inheritance, linkage etc. are all gone
- Practical investigation has been added

Agree with the above. The new SD is a lot more detailed than the old, so a lot of the guess work has been taken out of it. They also seem to have shifted the vibe of the course towards molecular biology and away from "older" areas, which is nice.

Thank you! I could not find that summary of changes document no matter how hard I looked!
That clears it up a lot :) Thanks vox nihili and sabfu!

hey,
does this mean that we don't have to do the genetics stuff such as pedigrees and punnett crosses etc etc?

That's correct. They're now part of the year 11 course.

What a shame, it was the best part of the old course in my opinion!

It's a pity they've moved it to year 11, as I think that'll mean that people won't leave VCE as strong in that area as they otherwise would be, which is disappointing for such a key area of Biology. With that said, I still think that, on balance, this study design is an improvement on the last. It's clearer, it seems to be doing better to try to establish the basics and it's made clever expansions to areas that were really lacking. The addition of the research design stuff is a no-brainer as well.

I can't believe they got rid of inheritance! That was my favourite

so what was the point of having inheritance in  the year 11 course?  :o isn't year 11 supposed to be similar to what's going to be taught in year 12?

Not at all. It's always been fairly different in Biology. Perhaps even more so in other subjects.
