I was wondering if you can get into med if you do bachelor of science with physics as your vce science (without chemistry). If not, is there any way to get into med without chem?

The postgraduate medical degrees don't care about your VCE subjects. The undergrad degrees do.

So in other words, you could do med without chem if you do bSC and make it in?

Or any other degree. You don't need to do a BSc but if that's the way you want to go, yeah that's fine.

Oh nice! Thanks for the info.

If you don’t mind answering, would it be a good decision if I were to drop chemistry units 1/2 and to do BSc at Monash or Melbourne, and then to proceed with post grad medicine?

Hi. Is there any reason you don't want to do chemistry?

Hi,

The reason why I don’t want to do chemistry is because I don’t quite find it interesting (unit 1 so far). I can’t speak about units 2-4 because I haven’t done it yet, but unit 1 is very dry.

I hated unit 1. Found unit 2 okay. Unit 3/4 were much better. I’d recommend checking the study design and seeing what’s on offer in those units before dropping Chem.

Hi,

I can understand. I found unit 1 a little dry and to be fair, a decent chunk of unit 1 does lay the groundwork for some chapters in unit 3&4 (especially the first chapters). I think unit 2 has more in common with 3/4 though. I definitely found 3/4 more enjoyable than 1/2. (To be honest I found all 1/2 subjects pretty dry). But if you find chemistry not that interesting already, then its probably not a good idea to pursue 3/4. As a personal experience, I dropped Japanese 1/2 because I found it very boring (all there was were memorising specific vocab that you pretty much forget after taking the test/sac) and if I still did it, I believe I would have got a worse atar score. I agree with Lear completely and would recommend checking the study design as well.

I don't think there is a consensus of which pathway is better but one of my careers counselors said that the graduate pathway (where you have to do the GAMSAT) the best option but I decided to take a gap year and do the UCAT (because I fear doing the GAMSAT). However the school counselor was pretty biased and just said that the undergraduate pathway is useless. On the other hand, I had several medical students (present and past) who have told me that undergraduate is better. Its subjective.

It really depends on which pathway you want to pursue. I recommend you take the issue up with your careers counselor before dropping your chemistry subjects instantly and discuss with them. Good luck.

Are you able to sit the UCAT if you finish year 12? Or do you strictly need to be in year 12 to sit it?

You can do UCAT in either year 12, if you're taking a gap year or even if you're in university I believe. Pretty sure you can do it unlimited amount of times as long as you're year 12 or beyond. Then again Chemistry 3/4 is involved in the first two options. I am not exactly sure if you need to do 3/4 chemistry in VCE if you are planning do UCAT while in university.

Did either your counselor or the present/past medical students provide a reason why one is better than the other?

Just curious. My understanding is that the ultimate goal is to simply become a doctor so it shouldn’t really matter which pathway you take (other than things like the process of getting in or length of the course obviously).

Hey there,

In terms of your question regarding specifically the Bachelor of Science course, I did some research for you.

For Melb Uni, you need at least a 25 in in one of Biology, Chemistry or Physics, so all good there  :)
For Monash, you have more of a range: a study score of at least 25 in one of Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Science, Geography, Mathematical Methods (Any), Specialist Mathematics, Physics or Psychology, which is really great for you!

Many, many people have found Units 1/2 of chem very dry and boring, and say it got a lot better in 3/4. I'd definitely recommend trying to stick it out for the rest of the year and definitely as everyone said check out the study design as that has all the useful, up to date info and talk to your teacher about how you feel and get their views. Many people advise you to always keep chem handy but there always many pathways, it just may be more time-consuming to get to your desired course.

Also, you can sit UCAT in Year 12 and any year after that which is great. Hope I've helped :)
