Specialist Math or Economics

Hi guys!
I’m in year 10 and it’s time for me to select my vce subjects soon and I really need some help
I’ve already decided that I’m going to do these subjects:
-English
-Physics 3/4 (doing 1/2 atm)
-Math Methods
-Chemistry
-Viscom

For my sixth, I'm considering between
-Specialist Maths or Economics

I want to study engineering or architecture at university. I don't know if I want to do specialist math or economics. The reason I want to do spesh is that I think it will help me with uni math if I ended up picking engineering but I'm afraid that I can't handle the workload. Economics is the only other subject that I'm interested in and I've heard that the teacher is really good for Econ.

If I were to pick Spesh in year 11 and drop it because of the workload, would it be really hard to pick up econ 3/4 without doing the 1/2?

I'm averaging about 95% in my tests in year 10 methods and got 100% on the last test before the end of semester 1, would this be a good indicator that I can handle Spesh? I'm willing to put in the work but I also don't wanna neglect my other subjects because of spesh as well.

That's all. If I could get some advice on choosing my 6th subject and the workload of my subjects from pass/current students doing these subjects, that would be amazing.

Thank you in advance  ;D

You are correct in saying if you select spec maths it will help you at university with engineering. However, you don't need to have done spec maths to do engineering there are definitely those who don't. To make up for this you generally need to do a foundation maths subjects in your first semester which is basically the equivalent of spec maths and maybe a bit broader.

I haven't done economics but I do know that some people have done 3/4 without 1/2. There will be general concepts that would be valuable to economics 3/4 but you could potentially learn them during the summer holidays before year 12.

As for your last question I can't really say whether that those scores are a good indicator given different schools have different tests and marking.

Hi!

I'm essentially doing this same set of subjects, however I completed Methods in Yr 11. I'm also doing art as a folio subject.

Just in terms of the workload, I'm finding it manageable. It really helps finishing a subject in Year 11. Spec does take more attention than other subjects though, and will require a bit of extra persistence through the year.

It can sometimes be hard with a folio subject, but if you time manage well and eg. get your folio finished early, this subject combo is doable. Its all in the time management!

Having done Eco 1/2 and 3/4, I can confirm that you don't need 1/2 to succeed in 3/4.
From what I remember, the only thing that heavily carries over from 1/2 to 3/4 is the content covered in Unit 3 AOS1. So if you do end up deciding to do eco in yr12 then just go over U3AOS1 dot points from the study design and teach urself from the textbook - it's all relatively simple. You can get some help from YouTube videos if you don't understand some of the stuff straight away.

Good luck :)
