Title: Spesh without methods
Post by: milanander on December 09, 2019, 10:55:26 pm
I have no practical purpose for asking this but just to satisfy my own curiosity, is it actually possible to do spesh without methods? Do schools actually allow it? Does VCAA allow this? (can't find anything on the website). Also I've heard of some students doing further + spesh combo, is this actually true or just an urban myth?

Thanks!

AFAIK, you have to do Methods in order to do Spesh, but that's just from my limited knowledge and what others have told me.

From the VCAA Mathematics Study Design:

"Specialist Mathematics Units 3 and 4 are designed to be taken in conjunction with Mathematical Methods Units 3 and 4, or following previous completion of Mathematical Methods Units 3 and 4. The areas of study extend content from Mathematical Methods Units 3 and 4 to include rational and other quotient functions as well as other advanced mathematics topics such as complex numbers, vectors, differential equations, mechanics and statistical inference. Study of Specialist Mathematics Units 3 and 4 assumes concurrent study or previous completion of Mathematical Methods Units 3 and 4."

Whilst it seems you could technically do Specialist without Methods, you'd be hard-pressed to find a school permitting that and I'd certainly recommend against it.

It is possible to do specialist maths without methods. I have seen a few rare cases of this happening with some students not completing methods at all and some doing methods in the year after the completition of specialist maths. However, just like Tau says it is extremely unlikely that a school would let you do it and the times that it has happened are extremely rare.

Cheers for all the response. Makes sense now!
