Hello everyone,

I am trying to write a comparative paragraph for 1984 and Stasiland as a homework task
The topic is "Both Funder and Orwell display the ways in which surveillance controls people's lives, Discuss

Ive had little experience with writing comparative essays, only doing one last year for To Kill a Mockingbird and A Man For All Seasons, I have since forgotten the structure and how to write one well.

In terms of the actual novels I need to analyses, I have come up with some ideas, I believe that my main argument for this paragraph would be something on the lines of that "Mass surveliance ultimatley has a negative effect on people that ruins lives emotionally, physically and mentally'

I am struggling with the next bit, is anyone able to help me write something?
Many thanks

Hi Karapl13

I'd suggest you reconsider your contention. That 'discuss' command in the prompt is asking you to talk about HOW the authors display the ways in which surveillance controls people's lives, rather than what kind of effect (which you've described as negative) surveillance has on people's lives.

A good way to make sure you're on the right track is to turn the prompt into a question, and then use your contention as a 1 sentence answer to check if you've answered the question. ie:

Q: How do the authors display the ways in which surveillance controls people's lives?
A: Mass surveillance ultimately has a negative effect on people that ruins lives emotionally, physically and mentally.

As you can see, that doesn't quite answer the question.

Hope that helps! =)
