Hi there,
Just want help with a biology question
Question:
Sketch (obviously you cant here) a diagram of a duplicated pair of homologous chromosomes. Use colour coding and the following terms to add labels: duplicated chromosomes, chromatid, centromere, gene locus, homozygous, Heterozygous
Hi,
Here's some definitions and some locations for the chromosome parts you mentioned above:
- Chromatid: a strand of DNA. (On a duplicated chromosome, there will be 2 sister chromatid arranged in an 'X' shape.)
- Centromere: middle of the chromatid, where spindle fibres form. (Usually represented by a circle in the middle of the chromosome).
- Gene Locus: a fixed position of the chromosome, e.g. a sequence of DNA coding for one gene.
- Homozygous: refers to a pair of two of the same alleles on a duplicated chromosome (1 on each chromatid)
- Heterozygous: refers to a pair of two different alleles on a duplicated chromosome (1 on each chromatid).
If you look on google images under "duplicated chromosome" or something similar, there should be a whole bunch of diagrams which shows the above information visually. Hope this helps!
