Hey guys just need a help with these 2 questions for a sac these are:
1. The 3rd line of defence involves the process of clonal selection. Explain how this ensures a specific response to a foreign agent?
2. Neutrophils are another type of leukocyte involved in the second line of defence. Explain how they are able to distinguish between cells of the  of the body and foreign agents.

I'm doing Y12 Biology in Y11 at the moment. For the 3 SACs so far my total is 28/50. I know I stuffed up in my first SAC as my teacher had not made things very clear and I had thought we were doing a prac report. Apparently that happened to be worth the most marks out of the 50 (Enzyme SAC).

So l would like to know the range of scores you would have to get in order to get a study score of 30-32
My mate had GA1 B, GA2 A, GA3 B-B+
Study score of 32 raw. Note that this was last year, schools and cohorts differ. Your hopes are still high as the exam determines most of it.
Good luck! :)

What's the difference between a pathogenic organism and a pathogenic agent ??? Thanks ! :)
Pls do not send me a pm about Aspire applications. The process has vastly changed since I applied.

Organisms are living, agents are usually reserved for viruses, viroids, prions which are non-living

Explain why first exposure to an allergen produces less severe symptoms than subsequent exposure
I know it has something to do with memory cells.
Thanks

Well my school just started Unit 4, and wow this AoS1 is huge.
There is a hell of a lot of content to cover! Previous students, was this the most challenging outcome?
Is it long and draining or interesting?
Thanks!

2 main reasons are: B-memory cells have already been produced after fist encounter => response faster, more cross-linkages occur between the allergens and IgE antibodies bonded on mast cell, the release of histamine will also increase on second exposure.

Hey everyone!

I would really appreciate if someone who has already done a similar SAC could let me know how I can best prepare for the immunity SAC. All I know is that we have to make an annotated poster; we will be given images, then we have to put them in order and describe what is happening at each step. What sort of processes will we have to describe?

Also, if someone could please explain how the difference between MHC markers 1&2 and how they work that would be great! Thanks :)

Sounds similar to my SAC I did last week, although we needed to draw an antibody. Just make sure you're familiar with the 3 lines of defence, humoral and cell mediated immunity, how one can be treated, the forms of acquired immunity (diagram or flow chart) and specific terms/definitions.

As for MHC markers, the easiest difference to remember is that MHC type 1 is found on all cells with a nucleus (excluding red blood cells) whereas MHC type 2 is found on antigen presenting cells aka APC these include macrophages, dendritic cells, B-cells etc...

Note that Type 2 MHC markers are recognised by Helper T-cells henceforth stimulate an immune response.

Hope this helps! :)

Thanks so much for your help! MHC markers make a lot more sense now.

I had the SAC today. It was a little bit weird and not really what I was expecting, but oh well, you win some you lose some!

They're unicellular eukaryotes; protozoa is a massive, massive group.

Some notable protozoans include Plasmodium falciparum, which causes malaria when it reproduces inside a host's blood cells (you may have heard of this one before).

A macrophage comes under the heading of phagocyte.
Neutrophils and monocytes are also types of phagocytes.
