Hey Milanander!

You're journey sounds really interesting so far :) How do you feel now about completing 3/4 Art and 3/4 PDT at such a young age? Do you feel as though it has prepared you to take on VCE again?

You're subjects for next year sound interesting. I study physics and QCE 3/4 physics looks hella interesting. But I'm particularly interested to see how you find specialist maths. I would have loved to study it but my school didn't offer it (my friend is studying it externally, however, and she loves it). What subject do you think you are most excited for next year? :)

It's tough loving something so much but knowing that it may not provide a stable career... But it sounds as if you have really thought this through. Hopefully you'll have time to continue art as a hobby. I've had a similar experience to you. I am hella interested in theoretical physics (string theory mainly) and always dreamed of making a career out of it (I wanted to be the next Stephen Hawking, you know? ;D)... But there just isn't a need for it in Australia and it doesn't provide stability. So, I've decided that I will go into secondary education (teaching senior maths and science).

I too am aiming for a high ATAR... I would love a 98 (or a 99 - but that definitely won't happen). I'm trying not to focus on it too much because I don't want to be too disappointed if I don't achieve it. Try not to put too much pressure on yourself, yeah? By the sounds of things, I have full faith that you will achieve great things next year :)

I'm excited to see were this journal goes :D I hope you enjoy these summer holidays and have a great Christmas!

Woah. I've seen you around the forums and your signature intrigued me and now I know the wild story behind it. It blows my mind that your school let you do VCE subjects so young or that your core teachers let you do folio work in their class.

It's sad that your cohort weren't too happy about the special treatment from your teachers. After all, it's not exactly something you could control but I also get that they recieved less attention too. There was a bit of tension this year between my cohort and I too because I was doing Methods 1/2. My Methods teacher was also my Year 10 Maths teacher and I would only have 4/5 Methods periods because of timetabling. I'd have to do Methods work in Maths class and if I had any questions, she'd come to me first and I'd be called her favourite by my class. My class wasn't a big fan of her and always talked back to her. On the other hand, I really liked how she tried to catch me up and considered my situation. I think she wanted to help me because I was a bit of an underdog in our Methods class.

I'm sure you'll do great this year and I'm looking forward to hearing more from your journal. I like how you're aiming for as high as you can. That's my philosophy too hahha. I'll be honest, I don't know much about careers and stuff but you can still make art and sell it and be an engineer too right?

Your VCE journey sounds so cool! I've been wondering how you did those subjects so early as its in your signature - now I understand why ha ha. You are actually AMAZING to do those at such a young age!!

Like you, I love art as well. Like you mentioned above, I'm not planning to pursure it as a career, because its really not the most stable job, but planning on Bioengineering or something similar!! Perhaps you could do art as a business or something on the side, like selling your artworks/commissions or some sort?

You have a great set of subjects, how do you feel about doing a folio subject in Year 12??

I'm so excited to see your VCE journey into next year, your interests are so similar to mine!

Good luck!!!

So good to see you have started a VCE Journal Milanander!
VCE Folios can be really tough and the whole process of scaling afterwards is horrific (Thanks VCAA for the -5-7 scaling). I can sort of relate to you with the passion in art but not being able to pursue it due to not being stable. Is there a type of engineering you plan to do? (I'm sort of in the same boat with engineering as it is a balance between design and maths) ;D. It's great to see that you are aiming high and I'm pretty sure you will get there!

What do you think your favourite subjects will be in Year 12?

I'm excited to see some more journal entries in the future!

Hey Katelyn! Wow it’s not everyday that you see someone with a passion for string theory! But yeah I get your pain, it seems that the only scientific research Australia favours is medical (not that I’m throwing shade at medicine, I can understand why it gets priority). Have you thought about going overseas?

I quite like Australia and don't have any plans on moving. Even if I were to go over to America, for example, theoretical physics still doesn't offer financial stability... I guess I'll just have to stick to researching it in my spare time ::) Besides, I'm quite passionate about education. So I'm excited about going into teaching :)

I think my early 3/4s has definitely given me the skills to tackle VCE with a better mindset and study skills, so yes. When I did studio arts I thought 40 was easy, and didn’t put in as much effort as I would’ve liked, so now I know to put 110% in to everything I do.

Well that's good! :) It definitely sounded like a valuable learning experience (despite missing some core knowledge in other subjects).

Specialist maths is really fun! It sucks that you don’t get to do it but you should definitely learn it in your spare time if you are interested! I really enjoyed U1/2 so hopefully 3/4 will only get better.

haha I'm not getting too much spare time lately. I did think about going through the syllabus myself but it's very time consuming - so I might just have to wait until I've graduated (or maybe I can get my friend to teach me at lunch times...  ::) ) Yeah, I study methods and apparently there was quite a lot of overlap between 1/2 methods and specialist - but my friend definitely enjoyed specialist a lot more than methods and is very excited for 3/4 (she wasn't a fan of methods at all).

But the subject I am most excited for is Viscom. I am more of an artsy person after all. 😄

Aha makes sense ;D Viscom sounds really interesting - it's always nice to have those subjects that don't make you wanna cry when you study them 😂

Thank you and good luck with your QCE studies!

Good luck to you too! :)

Hey Ashmi! I absolutely love reading your journal - also love that you’re aiming for a 50 in PDT, your folio looks like it’s off to an amazing start and I’m sure you’ll achieve amazing results!

Yeah the scaling is terrible (both studio arts and PDT scale down to 32 for me 😓) so thank god for spesh I guess? I know the scaling is calculated “objectively” and whatnot but still.

My favourite subject next year will probably be viscom! And I am thinking of mechanical engineering. What about you?

At least Spesh is going to make up for the sad scaling of your folio subjects!😅 It would be so nice if our folios were assessed in like an interview with a mini-exam to avoid the problems of notorious scaling. I would love to see some of your Viscom pages next year if you feel like putting some progress photos up in your journal! Let's hope we both reach our goals for our folio subjects and that VCAA doesn't make our scores look that bad :P
I'm thinking of doing electrical, biomedical or mechanical (with aerospace)! (Yay to the mechanical engineering squad!! ;D I really want to do Bachelor of Science/Master of Engineering at Melb Uni).

Is there a reason why you would like to do mechanical engineering? Either way, I'm super excited to see more of your journal!

Wow Milander! Sounds like you had quite the topsy-turvy ride. I'm very glad that you enjoyed homeschool and had the time to catch up and consolidate your core subjects. You have definitely put yourself in a great position for next year! I did a similar thing (skipping a grade, missing close to six months of school for personal reasons, repeating a year, ending up back where I was meant to be). Isn't it funny how things work out in the end, even with all of the fluffing around! If you could do it again, would you still skip the grades initially? Did you learn things from doing it that you found worthwhile? ;D

I'd love to put up some pages from my folio next year, along with artworks that I make in my spare time. And good luck for top designs! I got rejected for 2020 (systems) but I have my fingers crossed for the next one!

Sounds amazing, especially aerospace engineering! Is there any that you're particularly leaning towards? I like mechanical because it has always seemed like the most creative and artsy-est one; also I'm not a fan of other science fields like chem or bio, so chemical/biomedical engineering etc are off the list, and my grandpa was a mechanical engineer and I've always been fascinated by his work; I'm open to learn more about other fields though, like electrical and aerospace.

I feel a lucky vibe coming from Viscom for you and lets hope we both get into 2021 Top Designs! (It would be so cool if both of our folios go on display 😆).

I'm sort of leaning towards electrical just because it has a good even amount of design/art and maths in it. If you enjoy physics and design, you might actually enjoy electrical. (Let's go Physics squad!🤣) I really like the idea that you can actually design/develop medical devices and automated systems. Electrical actually has components of both biomedical and mechatronic/mechanical engineering since the content overlaps too! (Don't have to go too deep into the other sciences).

Aerospace is pretty much a mechanical engineer that specialises in aerospace! (Again, it's pretty physics, design and maths based). The idea is to design and build aircrafts or if you decide to go into the aeronautical side, building spacecrafts! Like all the other engineering stuff, it is making sure you can make the project safely (so in this case, aerodynamic fluid flow, the structural design, making sure you can control it easily etc).
Now that I've actually written this out for electrical and aerospace, I think biomedical is off the list.

Anyway, I'm so excited to see what you come up with next year for your folio! ;D

Being in a class with kids 3-4 years old than you was intimidating.
I was the youngest by 14 months and had kids two and a half years older than me in my class! I can't imagine four years; it would have been more than a little jarring!

Can't wait to hear more about how you find your year! ;D
