A Particle in an Electric Field | Ashmi's Uni Journal
« on: February 18, 2021, 03:55:20 pm »
+27
Hi everyone!

I'm Ashmi but everyone calls me Ash. During high school, I kept a VCE Journey Journal and decided it is time to start up another journal, this time for uni!

For those that don't know me, here are some interesting facts about me:
I live for anything choc mint flavoured.
Coffee is an essential item in my daily life. Warning: Do not approach Ashmi if she hasn't had her daily coffee dose.
In my spare time, you will see me photo-editing, sewing some new cosplays or designing something new.
I can easily be bribed with a chocolate éclair or Maccas' hash browns.
I am forever a cat person. Meow.
Slytherin gang🐍
Black pens > Blue pens
I love pastel colours! (Or black and red combo). You will notice many things I own are pastel in colour (especially pink for some strange reason)
The earrings I wear daily have the same design, but different colours depending on my outfit.

✰What are you studying in uni?✰
Currently, as of this post, I am enrolled in the Bachelor of Science/Master of Engineering at the University of Melbourne. Originally I only wanted to do Electrical Engineering, but now I am also considering pursuing Physics to a higher level. I still don't know what path I will take for postgrad, but if there is one thing I know, it is that I plan to be majoring in Physics for my undergrad (unless I am 100% positive I want to do engineering by the end of this year then I will change to Electrical Systems, but I rather do Physics as it gives me more flexibility).

There are two main scenarios that I think will play out:
   1. B-SCI -> Master of Engineering (Electrical)
   2. B-SCI -> Master of Science (Physics) -> PhD (Or a plan that will eventually lead to a PhD)

If I do decide to pursue Physics, I think the areas I may be interested in are particle physics (high energy) or astrophysics and I'll most likely do a PhD. Who knows I might even do High Energy Astrophysics (would be so handy if I knew a bit of Electrical Engineering too). Option 2 sounds almost unrealistic for me, but you never know what will happen in life. There might also be a possibility that I study overseas for option 2 but that thought is much later down the track. Option 1 however is just as appealing to me as option 2 (how can I say no to anything electricity-related?!). I have always loved anything to do with circuits and engineering lets me have that design aspect that I crave. E.E is like the middle ground between maths, physics and design. To be honest, I feel that I will study both areas at some point in my life, it is just a matter of what I am going to do first.

One day, I hope that this lens I am always looking through can focus on a single point and bring some light into my life.

✰Do you have any long term goals that you want to accomplish during uni?✰
I have always wanted to go on exchange. There is this one university I would like to go on exchange in particular, especially if I plan to be studying particle physics. It would be a DREAM to visit ETH Zurich (Also known as Swiss Federal Institute of Technology) in Switzerland. There are a few reasons I want to visit this place, in particular, the first being there are many Nobel Prize Laureates from there (*cough* Albert Einstein *cough*). It is quite prestigious in the science/tech area and has some interesting research going on there. My second big reason I want to go here is that Switzerland is the home of CERN, the world's largest particle physics laboratory. I really want to see the Large Hadron Collider in person! After seeing so many pictures on the internet of the LHC at CERN (if you don't know what I'm talking about, search it up), you bet I will do anything I can to try and get there.

My last long term goal is that by the time I finish uni, I want to be able to look back and say that I am significantly better than when I first started. When I talk about being better, I mean knowing more quality people (networking), taking things one step at a time rather than focusing too far into the future, developing some self-confidence, improving my communication skills, step out of my comfort zone, engage in the community, if possible having a great academic record and lastly, to be happier than I am right now.

I'll end this introduction here for this first post. Welcome to my journal and I hope you enjoy watching this chaotic mess unfold. It is going to be one long ride and I hope you can come to join me on this journey without a fixed destination.

Hey ashmi!

I'm so excited to hear about your uni experience! :)

I'm a choc-mint person too! I know you said you live for anything choc mint, but if you had to pick one choc mint thing, what would you pick (please say ice cream!)?

Woohoo you made a uni journal!

I can't wait to see what you get up to in uni, and where your journey takes you. Weather you do physics or EE, they both seem like amazing options and I can see you going either way, only time will tell!

What are your first four units? Good luck with the semester!

✰Update: 19/02✰

Song of this Journal Update
So uni is about to start after a good 3 months of holidays! It feels so weird being able to relax for a long period of time (it feels like it went quickly though) but I'm ready to get back into a study routine. I'll start with the subjects that I plan to be studying this year.

Semester 1:
Physics 1 (PHYC10003)
Calculus 1 (MAST10005)
Engineering Technology and Society (ENGR10004)
Chinese 1 (CHIN10005)

Semester 2:
Physics 2: Physical Science & Technology (PHYC10004)
Calculus 2 (MAST10006)
Linear Algebra (MAST10007)
Chinese 2 (CHIN10006)

My Timetable

I also have peer mentoring on Thursdays but I haven't included it in this pic (My Thursday classes are online yay!). I have massive gaps between Tuesday - Friday which is good for me cause I struggle to be fully functioning in more than 2 back to back classes. I am quite happy with my timetable and it gives me time to finish work straight after a class.
I have heard that doing Calc 2 and LA together in one semester is not recommended so I'm thinking of reducing my study load to 3 subjects in semester 2 and taking LA in the summer term. If semester 1 goes well, I may consider doing the two subjects together just so I have the summer free. I am looking forward to all of my subjects this semester, especially Physics 1 and Chinese 1. I am slightly worried about all the maths subjects (looking at you Calc 2), but other than that I think it should be manageable. On a side note, I never thought VCE Product Design and Technology would ever be useful again in uni, but man I was dead wrong the moment I enrolled into ENGR10004.

Also, if anyone is currently studying at Unimelb, how hard is it to get a H1? (Especially for STEM subjects).

Now onto some other life stuff. Recently I got a job! I am currently working at this small tuition centre close to home as a student tutor and I absolutely love it. I run all the VCE Physics classes (head of physics now haha), Maths Yr 7 - 11, English Yr 7 - 10 and some of the scholarship test classes. I love my VCE Physics classes and not only does it feel like a dream to teach a small class, but it is also even better that I'm teaching one of my favourite subjects. It is permanent part-time and it will be a great opportunity for me to improve my teaching skills and communication abilities.

The other job I got was the ATAR Notes VCE Author position! So yay I'm writing the VCE Product Design and Technology course notes! I feel like I am writing a mini-thesis but it will definitely be worth it in the end when I can see the whole thing as one big piece. I'm about halfway through writing it up and I'm hoping to finish AOS 2 of Unit 4 tonight (I doubt it but I will try).

O-week is next week and I am excited to finally find out how we can get the hoodies (I hope it's a good design). Anyway, I'm hoping I don't get wrecked this semester. If you have any tips for a jaffy, please let us know! See you guys all for another update soon!❤️

I love your journal title!! Keen to read more😊

Spoiler
A particle in an electric field. A particle moves because of its electric charge and because of the presence of an electrical field right, so if i am interpreting this correctly then as you resemble the particle, then you can change your direction (career path) based your external experiences/influences or from a change within. Idk if I over thought that😂.

Always awesome to see another person who's interested in physics!! I low-key wanna go to CERN as well ahaha, I just think it would be super cool.
That is one busy timetable! But I've heard that first year is always the worst, so fingers crossed its a little less hectic next year.
Are there any courses you're really excited to take this year, or even over the next couple of years?? :)
I look forward to the next update. I hope you enjoy O-week  ;D

I love how you figured out the meaning of the journal so quickly!😂. But yes you are exactly right! It took me forever to come up with a name that would properly represent this journal and I'm glad someone gets it. I honestly thought no one was going to get that but man I made it too easy.🤣

✰Update: 16/05✰

Hey, AN! It has been a long time since I posted something in this journal. A lot has happened in the last few months and I would like to update you guys on what has been going on in my life!

I have been wanting to post in this journal for a really long time, however, work and other commitments made it hard for me to even have spare time. I was working a minimum of 13 hours a week at this tutoring centre close to home and I became so drained that I was struggling to even keep on top of study. I had my hours changed a few weeks ago and I have nearly caught up to all the work that I kept pushing aside (it also means I can do more frequent journal updates YAY!).

I'll start with some general updates before going into the specific subject update.

First things first, I submitted my draft for the ATAR Notes PDT course notes! This happened a little over a month ago and all that is left now is to wait till it gets printed out. I'm super excited to see the final printed copy of them and hope it helps some PDT students with their studies. I also joined the committee (first-year rep) for the Physics Student Society which has been super fun so far! We started a new Instagram for the club recently and so far, it looks like it is getting somewhere. Something like this was a little bit out of my comfort zone, but I'm glad that I'm using this opportunity to try something new and hopefully I can learn some new skills. To be honest, I was expecting uni to be completely different from high school, but to me, everything feels the same? (It feels like remote learning 2.0 but you can come on campus).

Ok, I have rambled on quite a bit. Now let's get started with the juicy subject stuff!

✰Calculus 1✰
I thought that at the start of the semester I was going to struggle in this subject, but it is actually the complete opposite. I have been on top of everything in this subject and I have another practice exam I want to try this weekend. For the written assignments, I have been getting 9s or 10s (out of 10) which I am quite surprised about considering maths is something that I struggle with. The next few weeks will be doing some practise exams and fixing any recurring mistakes (especially notation). I don't have a particular score in mind, but I want to try my best and get as high as I physically can.

✰Physics 1✰
Oh man, where do I start with this subject? Physics is like double if not triple the workload of Calculus 1 and I am finding this subject very difficult. There is such a large amount of content to cover in such a short time frame that I have fallen behind in some bits. I am using today to catch up with all the textbook questions I should have done (let's see if I can do 4 chapters worth of questions haha) and starting some practise exams. Score wise, Wiley Plus (our online homework) I have not lost a mark (as of yet) and lab wise, I'm averaging low 90s. I am really struggling in this subject, especially the optics and equilibrium components. A lot of my friends did UMEP Physics and have gotten high 80s or low 90s for their final score and I do feel like I am falling into the trap of comparing myself to them. I think I may be able to get a borderline H1 for this subject, but I highly doubt it at the rate things are going (more like 70s?). I am not going to give up just yet! There is still time to get better before the exam!

✰Engineering Technology and Society (ETS)✰
Oh hello, beautiful. You my friend, are one of the best subjects I have taken this semester. Assignment wise, my scores have ranged from 90 to 100 and I do feel confident that I can do well in this subject! This is the one subject where I think I can get at least a low 90 but in all honesty, I want to do better than that. This subject has been super enjoyable and I'm very thankful that the exam is worth so little. Without a doubt, this subject is going to carry my WAM. My final report is due very soon and is worth a large proportion of my score so I really want to do well in that component.

✰Chinese 1✰
Chinese by far is the hardest subject I have taken. I have a memory of a goldfish and trying to remember all of these characters has been a pain in the butt. I really want to try and get anything above a 75, but it is looking a bit out of reach right now. I had a short test last month where I just scraped past 80% and I have another test coming up where I hope I can make up for the first test result. I'm struggling a lot with pronunciation (especially the tones) and being able to listen to words I'm not familiar with and write the full pinyin for it. Everything else however has been pretty good! Reading hasn't been a problem and I can write well provided that I know the correct sentence structure. I want to use today to catch up on some work and practise writing full sentences (correctly haha) for my upcoming test. I am absolutely terrified about the listening test, oral test and written exam, especially since there are barely any resources to use.

That is it for today! I'll update you guys when something interesting comes around, but in the meantime, see you around!❤️

I am positive that you will do well in Physics, hang in there! I hope it all goes well. Its awesome to see that you've been enjoying engineering too!

Good luck for your exams Ash, I'm sure you'll kill it!! Hopefully we can catch up soon!! (and maybe we'll have some similar subjects next sem??) Can't wait for the next update!!  :)

✰Update: 16/09✰

What is this?! AN UPDATE? What sorcery is going on over here?🤣

HI EVERYONE I'M BACKKKKK!!
Since the last post, so much has happened that you guys all deserve an update (and also because mid sem break is next week). So, lets begin this update with the one and only, 'Song of the Update'.

Song of the Update

First of all, my subjects for this semester is different from the previous update. At the start of this semester, I was doing:
Calculus 2
Physics 2
From the Solar Systems to the Cosmos
Chinese 2

However, on the day of the census date, I dropped Chinese 2 and now I'm only doing 3 subjects. The week prior to the census date, I have a group meeting with my academic adviser who did his undergrad in Physics then his postgrad in computer science. We were talking about physics and all that and then he mentioned something about quantum computing (which I didn't know much about). Straight after the meeting, I started considering taking some computer science subjects, especially with what he said and a lot of the Master/PhD kids have mentioned. Some of the Physics subjects that I will be taking later in the course will require some higher coding experience, yet it isn't said as a prerequisite. I thought about the whole situation for a bit and I then decided that I wanted to take some CS subjects, especially after hearing about some quantum computing subjects offered in the higher physics levels.

But there was one problem... Unimelb's limit of level 1 subjects being restricted to 10. Since I'm doing Linear Algebra in the summer term, I realised that I would only have one slot left for level 1 (which I wanted to use as a breadth) and then the other problem was that I wanted to take Foundation of Computing and Foundation of Algorithms, which is 2 level 1 subjects...

After being thrown around on Stop 1's call system to a course planner ON THE CENSUS DATE, I decided it would be best to say goodbye to Chinese 2🤣😭. Let me tell you, that day was a whole ride! So now I'm just doing 3 subjects and just thinking about what I want to do next.

I am seriously considering doing a Diploma of Computing to improve on this area, not just for physics but also as a tool to help with further research if that is something I'm up to doing. The course planner also said I could sneakily get around it by doing Engineering Computation (Level 2 subject) and still be eligible for the diploma without FoC which was quite interesting. Either way, since I'm only doing 3 subjects now, I'm using it as an opportunity to learn and improve on programming in general (and also cook better food haha). I might likely will do some CS subjects and if I feel up to doing a diploma, I would cross-credit them into it.

Also for a subject's update!
Calculus 2: Much easier than Calculus 1. I absolutely love this subject and everything is so well planned out by the Maths department. Assignments have been pretty good and this mid-semester break is going to be spent revising all the content and moving on some practise exams. I feel confident about this subject and for once, I think I'm getting some positive vibes from it. The assignments have been great and I love studying it. Highly recommend it!

Physics 2: Oh man at this rate, I'm going to start falling in love with the MAST department over the physics one🤣. Physics this semester is much better organised and the live lectures they have on Friday are really beneficial as it goes through demos. Since the whole semester has been online, my lab marks are much better online than in person? I get more 20/20 online than I did in person (mainly because of a different rubric which I am loving) so that's a bonus! I've started doing a few past exams here and there for this subject but I must say, some of it can get confusing at times, but it's physics and it's meant to be like that haha. I don't feel as confident with this subject as I do with Calc 2, however, after the insane scaling of the physics department, I probably will do better in this than Calc 2. The new lecturer has forgotten to post the lectures for this week till a few hours ago which wasn't the best but it is what it is.

From the Solar Systems to the Cosmos: I picked up this subject last minute after realising it existed, but it is SO MUCH FUN! Content is so engaging and if you have done year 12 physics, half of it is a piece of cake. (*shhhhh and a WAM booster*).
We had an MST today and I was honestly panicking for nothing. For me, I found it much easier than expected as half of it could be done with Year 12 Physics, however, this subject caters to those that haven't studied physics after year 10, which they may have found hard (especially for the special relativity question). I love how this subject is structured and how they have been able to integrate astronomy so well without the maths, it is heavenly. The labs are fantastic this semester too and consist of short answer questions which makes it super accessible as a breadth subject to those that don't do science. I love how interactive the labs are, and even being able to get something to take a photo for you on the other side of the world is AMAZING!! We learned how to program a telescope to take a picture automatically for us (and we could chose which telescope e.g. in Mexico) and for my lab, I chose to do the Running Chicken Nebula, IC 2944. We also studied HR Diagrams of star clusters and learn to edit photos we take and coming to these labs brighten up my day. Best subject I have picked up so far. A few photos that I have taken for my lab are below.

This is the Running Chicken Nebula IC 2944 I was able to take a picture of after figuring out how to program the telescope!

This one was taken from the Hubble telescope and it is called Messier 16 NGC 6611. In this lab, we focused on learning to edit pictures and this is what mine turned out in the end!

Anyway, that is it for today's update and see you guys around 😁
