Hi
I 'm  a first year commerce student who needs advice on choosing my units.. Besides of the 6 compulsory units i have no idea what else to pick..
Do we have to pick a major unit in our first year study? i want to finalise my major after i get a taste of different area of studies.
and i'm really confused by the' commerce elective subject from home campus' on the recommended course plan. i have no idea about how to search these for these commerce electives.
i'm currently overseas so i'm not able to attend the course information session;/

Hi yzsxzjr1212,

Congratulations on getting into commerce at Monash!  ;D

Besides the 6 compulsory units it's entirely up to you at what units you want to pick as long as you meet the pre-requisites for those subjects.

I'm going to be starting my second year in a commerce/commerce specialist degree (commerce/actuarial science), and I've completed 5 out of the 6 compulsory units currently - so there's definitely no rush to do those 6 compulsory units.

If you have a look here http://www.monash.edu/pubs/2018handbooks/maps/map-b2001.pdf - which is just a guide, it suggests to pick a major unit and do a commerce elective subject on your home campus. What a commerce elective subject on your home campus means is any commerce subject that is offered on your home campus (which I assume is Clayton) that does not contribute to your major. A great example for that would be etc1010, which is somewhat of an extension of etc1000 which is bus and economic stats. To search for those units, on WES go to here https://my.monash.edu.au/wes/enrolment_form/ click ADD UNITS and then do an advanced search with your faculty being Business and Economics and campus being Clayton. This will give you all of the bus-eco units, which are all commerce units, that you have the option of picking at Clayton. You can look into those units whilst having this tab http://www.monash.edu/pubs/2018handbooks/units/index-byfaculty-bus.html open at the same time to see which units you have the option of picking as well. To do this, just search for any units coded with a C as the last letter in the 3 letters section, as that means that the unit is offered at Clayton and you don't have to travel on the shuttle to Caulfield.

Despite this, you have no requirement to do any electives from the business and economics faculty (which the commerce degree falls under in the first year). For me for example, even though I'm doing a double degree with very limited elective space, I was still able to study an I.T unit in my first year as it did not have any pre-requisites for it. In spite of that, if you're stuck on what major you want to study, all you have to do is put down ANY units on WES for your second semester and you have the option of changing them any time up until the 2nd semester census date, which is the last day that you can change your units without receiving any financial penalty. As per here https://www.monash.edu/enrolments/dates/census, you've got until the 31st of August to change your semester 2, 2018 units so there's no harm if you don't know what major you want to study right now.  ;)

However, you can't complete your enrolment for a commerce degree unless you put 8 units down on WES for your first year (4 in semester 1 and 4 in semester 2). So what I'd suggest is follow this course map to some extent http://www.monash.edu/pubs/2018handbooks/maps/map-b2001.pdf, put down the 4 units it recommends to do in the first semester and the 2 in the second semester. In terms of major/elective units, as said previously you don't have to make your mind up right now, as uni is incredibly flexible so you can transfer degrees/units at any time, as long as you complete your degree within 6 years. With that in mind, I'd recommend putting down bfc2140 and etc1010 as your 2 other units for now if you want to have a broad experience of degrees. Corporate finance from what I've heard in the past is relatively straightforward, and having done bfc1001 previously (which isn't offered this year unfortunately  :-\), it is a great way to get a basic understanding of a finance degree. Etc1010 helps expand your stats knowledge and is also relatively straightforward as a first-year unit. Remember though, that these choices aren't final so you can change as you deem fit.

If you get back from overseas before o-week starts, I'd still recommend making an appointment with a Monash Business School course advisor, located here https://my.monash.edu.au/news-and-events/bookings/busecoadv/ - with campus being Clayton, when the option to do so reopens, as currently you can only book a course advice appointment at Caulfield and Peninsula. This will help clarify some of the issues you may have, as course advisers can possibly help you pick units in your first year in case you get stuck and don't know what units to pick.  :)

Good luck for your first year of your degree and I hope to see you around on campus, as I'll be doing btc1110 in my first semester this year.
