Subject selection for year 11!!!

Hi
I am currently a year 10 student with subject selections just around the corner so i need some advice.

I am considering doing the following subjects in year 11. The first 5 subjects are definite but I am having trouble choosing my 6th. I do well in school but i am concerned that I am going to pick subjects that require a lot of work. Does anyone have any advice?

Accounting 3/4 (I am doing 1/2 this year)
English language 1/2
Methods 1/2
Chemistry 1/2
Legal studies 1/2

Specialist maths 1/2 ??
Business management 1/2 ??
HHD 1/2 ??
Further maths 1/2 ??

Maths is my strong point but I am cautious about doing spesh because it will be a lot of work and I don't want to work myself to death. I want to do med or accounting in uni

If anyone has any advice i would really appreciate it!

I've considered bio, and i did it as year 10 subject this year but i didn't really enjoy it & i didn't get the best marks. Also its not a pre-req for the courses i'm looking into

Welcome to ATAR Notes, Ella!

I think it is important to know that there is a lot of biology in medicine and other courses like biomedicine, so if you dislike it, you may not enjoy those kind of courses.

All subjects have a lot of work in their own way (e.g. Maths has a lot of problems to solve, whereas HHD has a lot of short answer questions and case studies) so think about what you're interested in as you may not worry about the workload so much. It might be helpful to make a pros and cons list and check out the study designs (aka the list of everything you need to know for a subject) and/or past exams for each subject you're considering.

Here are some of my thoughts:

- Are you interested in maths enough to want to do two maths subjects? I'd suggest to think about the topics you are interested in and perhaps have a look at the maths study design to see if any of those topics are part of either Further or Specialist. Specialist Maths will tie in well with methods as a some concepts are the more advanced versions of methods. Further Maths has more applications in real life with topics like financial arithmetic for example.

- Business Management is a great choice if you're interested in commerce and running a business. It might be similar to accounting because both subjects related to business but I haven't done this subject myself, so I couldn't tell you the specifics.

- HHD 1/2, in a nutshell, focuses on health from the perspectives of different population groups, nutrition, development, parenting and Australia's healthcare system. The content relates to real life, more so in 1/2 than 3/4, and content wise, it is quite different from your other subjects which gives you greater variety in your studies.

I'd suggest talking to your school's careers advisor, current teachers, teachers of the subjects you are considering, and / or your year level coordinator as they know more about you than we do and their help can be incredibly useful!
