Seriously, this has also basically constituted a whole heap of the Further posts and the PMs I receive. Not intending to blow my own trumpet here, but I pretty much made sure I answered nearly all the FAQs in my guide, yet posts seem to repeatedly arise every day. I think this can be addressed if the community as a whole makes a collective effort to redirect users to resources, rather than fuelling the issue and spoon-feeding the answers.

Jut construct a fake automated-manual-PM reply. Here's mine:
"pi has received your PM and it is currently being organised in a priority system whereby your PM will have its urgency measured and sorted against other PMs. Hence, pi will respond to you PM as soon as yours makes the top of that list. Until then, good luck and don't do cigs/drugs! :) "

Well richmond is gonna win the grand final so be careful!  ;)

Which year was this? :P

I think that despite being told this (all of which I agree), some people have a natural tendency to worry about factors like these. Call it excessive, call it competitive, I think some people just can't help but feel concerned about not being at the top and how it'll affect them.

Needless to say, I think a lot of people should definitely take what you said onboard! They'll be better off :) I'm personally going about it in a way where I think if can I work efficiently and to the best of my ability, ranking/scaling/numbers will sort themselves and reflect what I've put in throughout the year. :)

Quote
The competitor to be feared is one who never bothers about you at all, but goes on making his own business better all the time.
One of my teachers showed us this quote in relation to Business Management but I thought it was really relevant to VCE. So you should be aiming to be that feared competitor instead of worrying about everyone else. :)

This is by far the best post I've ever read on AN.

And makes me realize how retarded I am because I've made at least five ten posts regarding sac ranks.

I'll stop now ^_^

I remember reading this thread. It is gold!
2012: Biology [below expectations]
2013: English [below expectations], Chemistry [results pending way under expectations], Methods [below expectations-but happy], specialist [happy], physics [happy]

fabulous advice, i was ranked about 35 or something (yea) in a really strong english cohort of 127 and ended up being one of 9 people to get 40s. Also in Lit I was ranked 5 out of 11 in the class (a decent cohort but not too flash) and ended up getting a score in the 40s and the highest study score in the class. Chemistry I was ranked 1 out of 23 and ended up getting a 30 after bombing the exam. Also spent all year worrying about rankings. Whoops.

My cousin did Specialist Maths and he was ranked 3 in his class. He performed really well in the exams but the two ranked above him totally bombed out and got raw scores of 20 ish and it affected his study score for Spesh as well because he was ranked below them, and he only got 37 when he was expecting a 40+. So now I am worried about rankings too.
2013 Raw Scores: 41 Chinese SL. 48 Biology. 40 Methods Methods
2014 Raw Scores: 43 Chemistry. 42 English. 39 Specialist Maths

ATAR: 99.45 :)

Hmm? :O

You SHOULD care about SACs and exams imo so you can get into whatever course you're going for... How can you try your best if you don't care? :O

edit: exception: VCE physics. :P

As if you actually get to know you rankings!! Like in a subject where there is only one class you can kind of figure it out but otherwise.. I'm glad we don't get told though.

We don't get told our rankings o_o
i think teachers at our school are especially discreet with regards to rankings as they don't want to mislead students/cause discrepancies among us

Over the last couple of years I've seen threads on ranking appear almost weekly, with users frantically questioning:
- "what if I'm not rank 1?",
- "how do rankings work?",
- "OMG lost one SAC mark and am now rank 2, any chance for a 50?",
- "my school has no summer uniform, how will this effect my ranking?"
- "so when my dad graduated he was rank 3 in his applied maths class and my mum was rank 2 but he got a higher score, so is this still relevant today?",
- "what happens if Richmond wins the Grand Final and this causes VCAA to lower my ranking by 1?",
...and the list of questions goes on and on and (and you guessed it!) on.

So here's what to do about rankings, here's the secret:

DON'T CARE ABOUT THEM. DO YOUR BEST FOR YOURSELF AND WORRY ABOUT YOUR OWN SACS AND EXAMS.

Run your own race and don't play a numbers game. Don't worry about where you "might" stand in a cohort of "whatever" strength and how this is all calculated. I say this for a few reasons.
- The more you worry about things that you can't really change (eg. how rankings work?) the more you'll be stressed and the lower you'll perform (in general).
- The more you think about them, the more depressed you could get.
- If you focus on trying your best, you'll actually do better.
- If you focus on rankings you'll likely to become a competitive person that no-one likes.
- I and other mods have to read your thread which has already been answered about 50 times.

Having said that, I'm not advocating y'all living in a fairy land by yourself not caring about what everyone else is doing. You've got to care to make sure you're not doing something wrong or falling behind, but you don't have to worry and compare. It's that line that is the distinction that is important.

There you go, that's the secret. Now do your best and make yourself proud! :)

edit:
A quote I'd like to share courtesy of user dim_sim:

Most accurate and detailed explanation that I have ever read of how to achieve your best in VCE.
I totally agree with you, work hard, head down, work in complete silence and success will make the noise!!
Good luck to all! :)
