Title: Do you even SWOTVAC?
Post by: brenden on June 03, 2013, 01:51:49 pm
So, what approach do you guys take to SWOTVAC?
I know some people like to get pretty organised and even plan their breaks to maximise productivity etc etc.
I pretty much go for the "you've been a dickhead all semester, now you should cover a large quantity of content in a short amount of time" approach. This sort of backlashes on me, because after I complete some massive task I get this sense of achievement that means I go into a small lull before I figure out what my next massive task will be. (Hence making a post about SWOTVAC during SWOTVAC on a website that's designed to boost scores)

Cram, cram, and cram.

Ideally, you want to be using that time to consolidate the thorough and regular study you did in the semester, but loljks hardly anyone is like that.

What I like to do is to spend 2-3 days catching up on whatever I have to catch up on. Then, revise like crazy. Personally I like to read my notes and write important points. I try and do this about 2-3 times through all my notes (~50 lectures for the sem).

If you have prac questions, do it after the first writing, and in your second writing, write notes + things you got wrong or fluked to get them write next time.

Might seem a bit wasteful, but it kinda works for me.

All i'm doing is to regulate my sleeping schedule and solve the past exam questions...I remember cramming for the VCE English exam..I literally had no shower for two weeks..and didnt leave my study area expect for food and toilet..It worked :P

Okay ... I didn't need to know about the shower ... But okay...

Seriously, I am using this week to revise and revise and I need to finish writing my summary notes. I've found a couple of beautiful books with uni style exam questions, which you guys can find for biology, chemistry, physics and even medicine haha, and the best part is they are old editions . => longer time to keep the books.

Sigh but to be completely blunt, I am shitting myself. ;(

Hmmm...this is my plan for tonight and tomorrow.

Tonight:
IC - summarise Ethnography of Communication
Maths - Compile stack of earlier tutes + assignment questions
Tuesday:
Do Chemistry 2012 exam
IC - Summarise International Sociolinguistics + Conversational Analysis
Bio study - read earlier lectures
Maths - Begin covering Exercise Sheets on Pop. Genetics

I've been summarising fairly consistently throughout the semester for Biology and have pretty much got all my summaries done (covering like 28-29 lectures), apart from some slides that I'm just going to read over. I guess I'll just keep reading them, and reading them...and reading them (dunno if I should write more though)

Chemistry, I'm going to finish off my tute book first (I think there's only 1 page remaining) and then maybe get stuck on some exam practise. There's no more lectures which I feel I have to summarise quickly. And then during the exam practise I can get into writing logbooks with my mistakes.

Breadth, cram cram cram I have to start cramming tomorrrow, because I haven't really paid attention and apparently the exam is straightforward...to people who studied.

Maths, I think I'll just compile a stack of tutorial, assignment and exercise sheet questions and get through as many as I can.

I don't feel the "cram" stress for this SWOTVAC, which is weird, because now I feel too relaxed and slack during this week.

As said by the second years above, CRAM CRAM CRAM (for uni swotvac anyway). What I did last year was to do a whole day on a unit at a time, and then rotate through units as each day passed. Made small summary books (A5 size) for each subject (was kinda rushed, but had the main content I had to understand in one section and the stuff that I had to rote learn in another section). Then going through tute questions (this will help a lot, as the questions on exams are sometimes similar to the tute questions, although not all the time). Then moving onto exams, learning how to do any questions that come up year after year (although some units you don't get many exams for).

Basically in first semester last year that was around 11 hours a day for 10 days or so straight. It payed off in the end.

This year, I have a whiteboard drawn up with the next 4 weeks, with what unit I'm going to do each day, going to make a list of topics that were covered in each unit. The problems that I'm running into this year are though,
1. Last year I went to pretty much all lectures, knew what we had to learn even if I didn't understand it at that point. This year I missed a lot of lectures during the last couple of weeks while trying to get assessments done. So I really have 3 or 4 weeks of lectures to listen to before I even start....
2. I have slightly less time than last year's swotvac period, and an extra exam.
3. Units are actually hard and more content compared to the first year units last year.
4. Got my last major assessment done today, went to sleep at 6am, got 3 hrs sleep before I had to wake up and hand it in. I'm now down and tired and have my sleeping pattern shifted 8 hours or so.. Need a day or so break just to get back to being able to work.... So that's even less time.

I've probably gone off on a tangent here, but I think the main points are use your time wisely, but don't overdo it that you lose more time. A day or half a day break is good every so often to let the information sink in, and rest up a little. But for eng/sci, definitely go over past tute questions.

Don't beat yourself up. I woke up at 1pm, sat down at my desk and did some physics problems (like 5 of them), got bored, went to the gym, then back home to sleep. I wasn't even tired, just bored :-\

Different people have different expectations to fulfill as well as standards. Try and be consistent.

My SWOTVAC consists of finishing my notes for my units, then doing prac problems/tute questions, then practice exams
Managed to get through 100 lecture slides today and yesterday, just 260 to go :(

It's still 30 MC. How did you revise for the IC exam? I haven't really been attending the lectures and have just been listening to them at home the whole semester, and I hope that I can compensate for the marks I lost in Assignment 1.

I'm seriously not feeling much stress at all though...yet.

Lecture notes, all the answers are there. The tutorials mainly helped me for the assignments. I crammed 6 lectures the day of the exam lol

wouldn't worry too much about not attending the lectures, listening to them is just as ok.

Furbob's SWOTVAC sleepclock: be awake and study til 4pm, have a 2 hr nap, study/facebook/cry til 3am, get to sleep at around 4am, wake up at 10am, rinse and repeat

the good thing about doing 2 arts subs and 2 commerce subs is that usually my commerce subjects are during the first 2 weeks of the exam period and my languages are towards the end so I only study for my commerce subjects during SWOTVAC

exams are always bullshit though so you're never really ready, ever.

I study around 4-6 hours per day in swotvac depending on exam timetables.
Usually catch-up (I am looking at you MTH2021 >_>) then revision -> past exam time.
Usually comes out ok.

Is it best to stop studying the night before an exam? If so, what time do you reckon you should finish? IIRC I've heard 6 or 7 pm before, although it sounds rather arbitrary.
Title: Re: Do you even SWOTVAC?
Post by: brenden on June 05, 2013, 03:58:15 pm
Yeah, I've heard that a lot too, through the years. I think that's sound advice for someone who knows their stuff, just to relax and not stress yourself. But to be honest, if I didn't know shit before an exam, I'd be cramming like a bitch, because there is a lot you can learn in a good 24 hours.

You'd be wanting to not turn up to the exam as a zombie, so you'd probably want enough time for a proper dinner, 8 hours sleep, time to eat breakfast properly in the morning etc. Personally I'd end up doing light reading in the evening and probably end up dreaming about the French Revolution (or epsilon's and delta's, whatever relevant to the particular exam) anyway.

Well that works for me because sleep-deprived state + me + 2 or 3 hour exam generally is not a good mix.

The amount of stuff you can cram in a short period of time is actually amazing...my sister started studying/cramming for a 2nd year pharmacy subject two days before her exam, and ended up getting a unit award for it.

And ironically, the subject that she studied the most for was her lowest scoring one LOL

Right now I'm studying from 10-5.30 (with breaks every hour or two) and then I have a massive de-stress by playing Zelda, and then back to work at 8.30 ahaha

I am starting to feel the stress now, I felt like my hair was falling out all of yesterday night

I'm only working harder because I want H1 for at least 3 of my subjects...I would be ecstatic with four H1s, but meh-meh disappointed if I got 2 H1s and 2 H2As. I think the last outcome may be likely, but I doubt myself quite a lot.

In the same boat here. A H1 in Creative Writing is still possible but very close to being a write-off, which I'm not too fussed about. With my other three subjects I'm still desperate to get a H1. Some I'll be happy with just an 80 and others I'm still probably naive enough to be shooting for 90+.

I think one of the reasons I worked so hard last year during/at the end of first semester was because at that stage I didn't know what it took to get a HD (H1) or a D (H2A) e.t.c. So I guess I worked my ass off as I didn't exactly know how hard/easy it would be to get 4 HD's.

Real students just eat chocolate coated coffee beans straight from the bag*.

Okay, today I pumped out 2,000 words that I can regurgitate in the exam (they gave us the prompts so we could formulate our ideas), which is on Monday. So I've got a few days to read over it a few times and get it pretty stuck in my head.
Gonna take a break now and then start to cram more Psych (habits from VCE just don't leave, Psych is always the one that suffers).

What have we achieved today, people?

Also, tomorrow I'm going to study perhaps 2 of 6 Psych topics in depth enough to be exam ready, read my essay multiple times, and depending on how long/how much effort that takes me, decide to either do more Psych topics or start revising for Philosophy/Literature. Goals for tomorrow, people? #accountability #ashamedtobelongtogroupofdedicatedstudentsandstillbeashittruck #hashtagsonANdontbanme

*I don't do this; I am not a real student; I hate coffee.

I went to uni/library the other day and I probably did more work in that time then I have in the past 2 days... It's so much easier to 'study' at home (study is a codeword for procrastinate ;) ) I might try studying in the kitchen or something now, there's too much distractions in my room. But I am closer to food.... Far out. I'll test something different tomorrow and let you guys know. We can turn this into a research article. lol

Seriously though, new location atm for swotvac, I don't know whats best yet... Maybe Library once I get foundations for everything and can just smash out tute questions and past exams, while at home while I revising (well learning the last 4 weeks for the first time...) for each unit.

Green tea has far too low a caffeine content.

2 red bulls + coffee per day is where its at.
And adding low carbohydrates back into my diet for the purposes of ENERGY.

Oh also I prefer studying at home, mostly because getting to uni takes 1.5 hours of my precious time and also money for transport/food/coffee.  Emphasis on the coffee.

Also everyone should start drinking black french press coffee, you really won't know where all the hours are coming from.

I do what she says. That's that.

I now pronounce you man and wife.

Do you guys prefer studying at home, or at a library during swotvac?

Tried Hargrave, bit distracting though the noise wasn't too bad. Tried Caulfield, effectively packed to capacity (people studying on the floor of the aisles).

For some reason I physically cannot study at my desk/in my room, so I moved to the lounge room and somehow got ~a full day of study done for the first time ever.
I'm so proud of myself

This year, I mostly study in my room seeing as how all the university libraries are packed by lunchtime and I don't want to waste 1.5 hours travelling to uni. I kind of like working in solitude too, if I see too many people I know I get distracted by talk.

I will go to the library occasionally just to "switch the environment" though.

It also takes me 1.5 hours to get to uni, but I know that I will study at uni, whereas I probably won't at home, so it's a good trade-off. And had revision lecs this week too, 5 of them.

Well, my stubble/moustache is coming along nicely. SWOTVAC is exam season, which means facial hair growth time for guys.

Just imagine DisaFear's beard during SWOTVAC and exams. That's my motivation.

Review theories that need to be applied to case studies and made a template to work off for that. Just need to apply the theories... Pretty lazy effort, but hoping that tomorrow will be an extremely productive day!

Ok, lets be honest. I've been saying that every night for the past week...... Each day has been a massive let down. At least the amount of 'study' done is incrementally increasing. That's a good sign :P

Monday went and saw a doctor, then went to work
Tuesday went to Glen Waverly with a friend, ate at China Bar, bought shitloads of cheap makeup on sale at David Jones, dont even plan to wear the shit or know how to use it, then went to work
Wednesday went to drop a friend at an appointment and was supposed to go study afterwards but went to Southland instead, bought a nice dress from Dotti for $20 bucks, then went to DFO and GOT SOME FUCKING AWESOME DEALS AT TYPO, then went to work.

So pretty much my SWOTVAC consists of Shopping. Good time for sales. srlsy bro

Stay up until 6am, then go to your nearest Coles and buy some Red Bull, drink it for the rest of the day, crash at 7pm and sleep til 8am or something like that, then study hard, and you should be tuckered out early. That should sort you out pretty quick.
*If you fuck this up it'll really fuck up your sleep pattern

Well, my stubble/moustache is coming along nicely. SWOTVAC is exam season, which means facial hair growth time for guys.

Means fringe/bangs growing time for girls.

If any girl is ever having difficulty passing the 'shit stage' of trying to grow out their fringe (ie, the stage in which girls go 'omg should I cut it' and everyone goes 'no', so they go home and cut it because they 'just couldn't take it anymore') they should just hibernate during the exam period for a month or so and the time will fly right by, you'll come out the other side with a full load of hair in your face and the possibility of a true middle/side part.

And BigAl, I wish I could help you but as soon as I get to swotvac I change to a 5am to 12pm sleeping pattern immediately.  It's my natural pattern and my body won't actually let me go to bed before 5 or get up before 12 if it knows I don't have to go anywhere the next day.

If you can, try to get some melatonin from your pharmacist/GP. It's a hormone your body produces to help regulate circadian rhythm. Pick a set time that you want to be able to sleep, and take the dosage recommended by your healthcare professional an hour before your selected time (depending on the strength of the supplement, this might vary). This will condition your body to fall asleep at the time you've chosen - but you need to maintain this schedule for a time until your body adapts to the new sleep patterns.

N.B. Some people find that they wake up nauseous/groggy the morning after taking melatonin - so just be aware of the potential adverse effects. It's obviously a good idea to discuss the possibility of this occurring with a healthcare professional.

Good luck!

It's easier throughout the semester because you have no obligation to actually do any work

the hard work and self hatred comes in the week before your exam when you realise you have to learn a semester's worth of material

Would this just be because the pressure for you is the same? Ie. VCE - have to score crazy high to get into the course you're aiming for. Uni - have to score crazy high to get into the course you're aiming for. ,whereas for everyone else it's different?
Title: Re: Do you even SWOTVAC?

Yeah, that's the main reason why - trying to get mainly H1s and H2As and I really want to try get the best GPA I can.

At VCE there was time to slack off though, if you slack off in university for like a week or two then it's feels like you're trying to climb Mt. Everest.

If you're in first semester of first year, relax, your marks there are pretty inconsequential for your GPA.

The only thing worse than loud construction work beginning at your neighbour's house during swotvac is the ability of said construction workers to shut off the power to your home for a prolonged period of time out of sheer idiocy. This beats two days ago where they shut off the water to everyone in the street prior to 8am. How is this even legal and people are getting ready for work then you fools. If I had showered today/could even shower with hot water atm I would go outside and start screaming, I really would. Or I would go yell at my neighbour but she has gastro so that would just be putting myself in the line of fire, it's a lose/lose situation.

For the second years and later, I'm finding it a lot more difficult to cram second year units as compared to first year units. I feel like I'm going to run out of time, in the sense that there's too much in the second year units to cram properly in swotvac... Just wondering if anyone else has had this happen to them in the past or if I've just lost my swotvac cramming ability?

Yeah I'm finding that this is the case as well with 2nd year units. I kind of expected it though, because I guess lecturers would understand that first year is a transition year so they may be more lenient with exam material and content. However, I presume they would have expectations that once you get into 2nd year and onwards you'll have learnt and developed the basic skills to study and learn progressively through the semester and REVISE throughout the semester ;)
I'm not sure if it's the units specifically or maybe I'm just burning out a little, but a couple of my subjects seem a very daunting process for exam revision... The content to cover is quite substantial and in more qualitative subjects the expectations of your responses seem to be quite high especially for your analysis. I'm finding a pretty big step in math subjects too in that there are a lot more theories compared to first year and that the methods and processes that you use to solve problems are much more loaded and require extensive understanding and linking of concepts.

In a simple sentence, things are not looking good for a couple of my exams!

I don't even know how people do it.

Regretting it a bit now, my mind/body are pretty messed up. Just hoping I don't crash during the exam.

I'm also hoping being a bit underprepared forces me to be on my toes. Throughout VCE I was overly prepared for my chem/Methods exams to the point where I could do no more and this actually tripped me up because I was just too rigid and methodical during the real thing. I really, really hate exams. Damn nerves.

(Do people count the exam period as SWOTVAC when you have no exams? My first exam was on the tenth, next one is on the seventeenth... extra days of SWOTVAC)
Was forced to get myself banned on AN in order to study for my first exam. Ended up pushing out 6.5 pages  very comfortably. Not sure if it was worth three days of no AN, though.

I'm still counting this as SWOTVAC as my first exam isn't till the 19th, so it's really an 18 day swotvac for me. Also you realise you can ban yourself Brenden? Nah i'm gone. I missed like 8 marks in a 10 mark question, 5 marks in a 5 mark question and many other marks due to poor working out. At the end of the day I worked through all the chapters, did the tute questions, all the past exams, so what can you do.

Physics Fundamentals will scale or everyone would fail it.  Depends on the subject.

Edit: what I mean is they'll scale the exam, not the whole subject.  Prac marks and assignment marks wouldn't change.
Like if the average for the exam is approx. 50% correct or something they obviously have to scale that because you can't fail half/the majority of the class.

Hate it when the person sitting in front of you has flatulence problems. There should be special consideration for that.

How was IC? :)

For the most part it was straightforward, I was unsure about 2-3 MC questions and I think I got one wrong. But oh well.

40 minutes was spent in that exam room just daydreaming and sleeping...and a lot of people resorted to drawing on the exam.

It's just the IC exam I wasn't able to leave early from. For some reason we had to stay for the whole hour.

I saw lots of people leave the Bio exam early, but I stayed back anyway - glad I did.

It was in a lecture theatre yeah? I guess they didn't want people having to go past other students doing the exam

Haha no worries. And that is ridiculous! The tables there are tiny and about as old as the building itself! And the seat space is miniscule.

I had a Roman History exam in a lecture theatre last year. No idea what the subject coordinators were thinking.

Also wish my exams would hurry up already. My first one is on the 17th and the last one on the 1st of July. I'm so glad that La Trobe are finally ditching 13 week semesters next year.
Title: Re: Do you even SWOTVAC?
Post by: simpak on June 16, 2013, 04:18:02 am
Yeah and you could read people's exam papers in front of you if you wanted to because some lecture theatres were tiered.
I always sat in the back to prevent any potential cheating from the person behind me haha.
The exams are not at allll as stringent - you can have all of your stuff with you and they barely patrol.
One of my exams I was in a lecture theatre cramped so close to the people next to me, and I brought coffee (from Starbucks) and it was fine except I couldn't fit it on the desk.  But yeah you were pretty much touching other people and right in the side of the lecture theatre nobody can walk past you - you have your phone, your notes, everything with you.
I'm sure if you got caught cheating you would have some serious academic probation to answer to but it would be relatively easy to do so discretely I feel, for some of my subjects with a larger cohort (100 people say).
Other ones were like 10 people, couldn't cheat in that haha, but for the final for eg. my lecturer just went on Facebook on his computer the whole time and had conversations with people after they handed their paper to him before the exam was over haha.  So informal!
I didn't think they would allow something so informal at Melbourne Uni though.

Wow MJRomeo the 1st of July!  That's so late /:
Latrobe 13 week semesters are actually stupid - there's no reason for them.  Is that the last day of the exam period or is there even more after that!?
Title: Re: Do you even SWOTVAC?
Post by: MJRomeo81 on June 16, 2013, 04:39:06 pm
The worst part for me is the lack of room. You can't even get comfortable taking notes by hand in a lecture theatre. Yet they expect students to sit an exam in such a small space.

And the lecture theatre I had my exam in was tiered. I could almost feel the person behind me breathing down my neck.

La Trobe's exam period ends on Thursday 4 July :S

Thought I was going to get dominated by that Lit exam but I ended up turning it into a pleasurable bondage experience where the dom/submissive roles were constantly interchanging throughout the exam. On the train home now. Has anyone ever felt so much like laughing after an exam? Nah on a serious note, that's probably a one-up that UoM has on Monash Lit. Realistically, after first year Literature we are extremely unlikely to ever have to write a piece in one hour ever again. I'm sure there's some rationale behind it... but I'm yet to figure it out.

Nah. If there's one thing you can count on; the one time you decided to get off IRC and go to bed, you end up lying in bed awake until 6.30am, by which time you figure it may as well be time to study.

I had this nightmare before my chem midyear last year where not only did I forget to wear pants to my exam, my paper turned out to be 100 pages whereas everyone else's was the normal length, and I also had to do a practical component and make a potion. All in the same amount of time as everyone else. And on my desk was this massive alarm clock that went off when the exam finished yelling "You fail! You fail!"

Good times. Totally undermined my confidence for like a week haha.

Yeah, before performances I always get dreams that in the dress rehearsal I don't know my lines, or on stage I don't know my lines. There's one that reoccurs with slight differences as performances vary. The worst thing about these dreams is, I usually don't know my lines when I wake up :p
I had one before Lit; no matter how fast I wrote, I didbt get closer to finishing. I even got given extra time and still couldn't finish. And the invigilators kept having conversations and distracting me D:, good times.

11.45am tomorrow, I leave my last exam room for this sem ;')

Yeah I constantly have the strangest nightmares about not being able to do a fundamental skill to complete something. Like not being able to lift my arms to play an instrument, not being able to run when playing sport and feeling really sluggish, not being able to fly when I'm a superhero and being a wizard but not being able to do magic despite casting the spells. Sigh.

And I've had the writing one! Like with every page I finish another seems to generate for me to fill out.

No.
The worst dreams are GAMSAT dreams prior to the day, and then the infinite dreams that come after GAMSAT, where you get the lowest score of all time over and over and over again on many many nights.  It's like the worst repeated nightmare.
So glad that's over with yo.

Haha, nah I can't eat meat and I eat a low fat diet...I just cut most carbs out because they made me feel all yuck but I have to try and find the right kind of balance for me because earlier this month I started having some digestive issues, hence the return to a low carb diet...I think it was mostly due to stress though. Anyway I eat like a limited amount of fish a week and then vegetables all the timeeee!

^Is this what happens if you study anything related to biology at university? O_O
It's like my friends studying microbiology, trying to avoid as much human contact they can as possible

What ): what does eating low carb have to do with avoiding human contact!  Or are you referring to my dismay over getting up for breakfast :3
I'm looking forward to breakfast, I just haven't slept properly all month! D:
It's not that we try to avoid human contact it's just that I must devote every waking hour to studying in order to succeed.

THAT SAID, helloooooooo freedom.
