21 / 06 / 2019  -  Friday

Hello hello beautiful people!!

Sorry for my prolonged absence yet again but I'm backkkkk and I come with good news!!

First off, I've survived Unit 3 mostly unscathed! Mostly, further results are still pending and also because the emotional trauma cannot be ignored.

But here comes the main news... I'm rank 1 for methods!!!!!

We got our SACs back today (both the collaborative and individual parts), and at first I was a little bummed at my results. My overall score was 88%, which is decent, but I was hoping for 90s. I had gotten full marks for the collaborative task 2, and 95 for individual, but only 70 for collaborative 1 which really sabotaged my overall score. But here's the kicker: only the individual counts towards rankings!

Why the school would put us through THREE SACs when only ONE counted is beyond me.

Both me and another student got 95, which were the highest marks in the cohort! If you've read my last update, you'll probably know that I'm incredibly surprised because I thought I really screwed up the individual SAC. I'm absolutely stoked.

Chemistry and biology, on the other hand...

For the chemistry SAC on equilibrium (which took the teachers aaaages to mark considering we did this at the start of the term) I got 57%. Better than the first SAC, that's for sure, but not good enough. For the cell communication SAC (bio), I just made it to 60% - a negligible improvement from SAC 1.

Study score predictions
We've also gotten estimations from our teachers:
-- Further: 44 ~ 47
-- Methods: 42 ~ 45
-- Biology: 32 ~ 35
-- Chemistry: 30 ~ 33
Which would give me an estimated ATAR of 98.80 ~ 99.40

If there's one thing I've learnt from my previous 3/4s though, it's that the estimates are only ever estimates. They're not set in stone and considering we're only halfway through the year, there are so many factors at play which could change these numbers.

My goal? To not become careless and lax for maths, and to start working much harder on bio and chem.

See you all soon!! Good luck to everyone for unit 4!

Thank you for your super encouraging words Prag! And absolutely no worries, more than happy to help! Thanks for your shout-out by the way, it made my day!

With biology, I think I give it more crap in this journal than it deserves haha! It’s a great subject and the topics are interesting (especially evolution), I’m just very inept at the subject hence my tendency to rant about how much I hate it 😂 I prefer subjects with less rote-learning and more application - like maths; but biology (to me) just consists of remembering things and also remembering how VCAA wants you to write your answers. It might just be because I haven’t gotten the hang of the subject, as my smarter friends see bio as an application subject too.

And yes I would’ve definitely done another subject — I only discovered recently that the course I hope to get into has PHYSICS as a prerequisite! So if I could choose my subjects all over again, I'd probably go for further, methods, chem, physics; or all three maths and physics.

Good luck with your journey too and with your subject selections! :))
Hi colline! It's very unfortunate that Physics was a prereq. Are you sure Physics was an option because most prereqs for courses state "blah blah methods blah blah english 25 study score in either Chemistry or Physics blah blah"

Yeah, physics 3/4 is a prereq for Veterinary Medicine at Melbourne Uni, which is what I'm aiming for. I don't really get it cos surely chem and bio would be more relevant? Like, chem is a prereq for med but physics isn't.

The good thing is I can make up for it by doing physics at uni, but I wish I'm doing it now so I can explore other options and do more electives in uni.

Here's an excerpt from the Melbourne Uni website:
Quote
If you’re looking to become a vet, after successful completion of second-year studies you can specialise in Veterinary Bioscience, a pathway to the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine. You'll need to have completed VCE Physics 3 and 4, or level 1 Physics subject in your first year or equivalent to be eligible and gain the approval of the Faculty of Veterinary and Agricultural Sciences before you can specialise.

Ikrr chem or bio would make SO much more sense! Perhaps you could do Biomedicine and learn physics through that? Or maybe you could try out for Monash? Also I was wondering what you think about someone doing both EngLang and Lit in VCE? Do you think it's more of an advantage or a disadvantage? This is a bit late but congrats on your AMAZING scores for Lit and Music Performance!

(Sneakily updating the day before the 30-day warning)

26 / 07 / 2019  -  Friday,  Term 3  Week  2

It’s exciting (and scary) to think that in 108 days, I’ll be ~FREE~ from the dreadful entity that is VCAA. :o

Our final term of school kicked off with the methods U4 AOS1 integration SAC on our FIRST DAY BACK. I know I passed, but I’m kind of desperate to maintain my rank, as snobby as that sounds. It’s probably not the best attitude, but I’m just being real here. I’ll save improving my attitude for another day.

Chemistry is going better — I got A+ on the practical investigation poster! It's a milestone of an achievement for me.

Organic chem is confusing as it’s now overlapping with biology. You’d think that, by also doing bio, I’d have an advantage. Well, if I really do, then this just shows that your other VCE subjects won't make a difference unless you actually have brain cells, and I’m severely lacking in that aspect at the moment.

I'm feeling quite burnt out for Further atm and my marks and rank has slipped. I can't believe I'm feeling burnt out for FURTHER, the subject I'm repeating. You'd think I'd be ahead, but alas, nope.

There was the UCAT. My results were as follows:

-- Verbal Reasoning: 590
-- Decision Making: 760
-- Quantitative Reasoning: 880
-- Abstract Reasoning: 700
-- (Situation Judgement: 633)
Total: 2930

I'm quite disappointed with my score for VR, as I didn't think I'd fall below 600 for any section. I'm pleased with my overall score though, and especially for QR. A few of my friends got over 3000 (wowee :O) but as I'm not really aiming for med, I'm not too fussed.

Final thing - VTAC preferences are coming up! The additional December round offer is a nice addition IMO, as Melbourne Uni's graduate degree packages are included in the December round, and my top two preferences (science/DVM and science/eng) are both GDPs.

Byeee! Hope it doesn't take me another month before the next update :P

Colline, your journal gives me so much motivation I can’t even describe it lmao.
Sorry if you’ve already answered this, but if you aren’t aiming for Med, did you need to do the UCAT for DVM, or was it something extra?
Keep working at it  :D There isn’t long to go, and I’m absolutely positive you’re going to smash it
Looking forward to your next update!

Hi Jeyda! Thank you so much for reading, it's so reassuring to hear that my journal isn't just mindless rambling to everyone ;D

Don't think I've mentioned it, but I've heard older students  talking about the UMAT for years and have always wondered how I would go on it had I aimed for med, so I did it out of sheer curiousity more than anything else.

You don't need the UCAT for DVM. As far as I know, you just need to study veterinary bioscience at Melb Uni for the accelerated pathway (6 years) or general animal health and disease for the normal pathway (7 years).

Thanks for your encouragement! I'm looking forward to your updates too <3

19 / 08 / 2019  -  Monday

There are less than 74 days until biology, my first exam!!!
(Cue panicked screaming)

Instead of a boring, subject-related update today, this will specifically be on my VTAC preferences.

I haven't finalised my preferences yet, though I know *for sure* my goal is BSci/DVM at Melbourne University, with BSci/MEng as the backup plan. My current plan looks like this:

I seriously considered putting Melbourne Chancellor's Scholars as my top preference, but with how I'm going in chemistry at the moment, it's not looking good for me. I have a pretty solid chance at DVM, though I think my most REALISTIC one is BSci with a graduate degree guarantee to Master of Engineering.

As for my last preference -- La Trobe is the only uni that offers a bachelors degree in vet studies — Veterinary Bioscience and Veterinary Nursing. Only bioscience leads to DVM. The course needs an ATAR of 60.20, meaning I’ve already fulfilled the entry requirements as my current ATAR sits at 69.15.

((Technically Deakin also has the Bachelor of Zoology and Animal Science, but that's not what I'm after))

If anybody has any advice regarding preferences (like if you would order them differently) or if anyone knows any other good potential courses which could lead to DVM, please let me know! I would really appreciate it!

Thanks for reading, see you all soon! <3

xx

(Btw this is really random but I just realised this is my 100th post on AN! 8))

Love your updates colline! Please keep ‘em coming, I love reading them so much!

I was wondering, for your vtac preferences, is there a reason why you don’t have bachelor of science by itself as one of the options? If you got into any of the other courses (except la Trobe) doesn’t that close off vet for you?

There’s nothing to lose if you keep Melbourne Chancellors on there as first preference except a preference slot. If you can spare one spot, definitely keep chancellors up there!

Hey, thank you so much for reading! ^-^

I don’t have science by itself as a preference because I’d only want to do science if I know for sure it’ll lead to something if that makes sense. Otherwise I’d just do a double degree which would give me more options in the future. I’m aware that means I might potentially close off the door to DVM but at least I’ll have viable backup options as a safety net. To me, doing only a bachelor of science is just too risky.

Biology is alright, we’re more or less finished with content now so I am moving on to revision!

There’s nothing to lose if you keep Melbourne Chancellors on there as first preference except a preference slot. If you can spare one spot, definitely keep chancellors up there!

Hi Lear, thanks so much for your suggestion, I really appreciate it! I’ve decided to take my former 8th preference (vet bioscience at La Trobe) off the list and moved everything else one place down so now I have Science Chancellors Scholars as my top preference. I don’t think I’ll get it haha but it’s really good motivation!

Thanks again, and hope uni has been going well for you! :))

Lead to something as in post grad or career?

What's available at the end very much varies depending on your actions along the way, but you certainly can set yourself up for a good exit :)

(Don't feel pressured by me either tho. If you just don't want normal science on there that's fine :P )

Hey colline,
How's Yr 12 been going?
Hey Snow Leopard! Oh my goodness, thanks for bumping this for me, I’ve been seriously neglecting this! Everything has been quite busy recently, with exams looming close and all, and I simply haven’t had the time to update.

----------

07 / 10 / 2019  -  Monday  Term 4  Week 1

I am now in my final term of high school! (*screams*) With less than one month to go, I thought I’d do a rather long update today as I don’t think I’ll be around much for the next month or so.

Trial Exams (and rankings...?)

We sat our official trial exams at the end of last term. For the most part, they went exactly as I imagined. Best was further, worst was chem. No surprises there. I didn’t even manage to get 50%, which was frustrating.

My trial exam scores were as follows:
Further: 95% (exam 1), 98.3% (exam 2)
Methods: 95% (exam 1), 87.5% (exam 2)
Biology: 73.3%
Chemistry: 44.2%

O chemistry thou heartless villain!

I don't exactly know my rankings for each subject. (How do some people know their exact rankings? Do some schools give them out?) If I had to take a wild guess, I'm ASSUMING top 3 for further (more details below), top 15 for methods, and average for both bio and chem.

Holidays

Such a misleading name, there was really nothing relaxing about my last ever school holidays. They were definitely productive though. I managed to:
   • Attend optional trial exams my school held for further and chem
   • Go to AN’s chem and bio revision lectures
   • Knock out 10 trial exams in my own time - 6 chem, 2 methods, one each for further and bio.

Aside from that I also tried to give myself a break with a friend’s 18th and a Troye Sivan concert. But otherwise, most of the holidays were spent in the most boring fashion at my desk.

Speech Night

My last ever speech night is coming up, held at Docklands. I have three performances on the night, two with the school band, one with the band my friends and I put together. We’re doing a mashup of Adele!

Apart from that though, there’s not much I’m looking forward to. This morning, I was dismayed to find out that despite all my efforts this year, I won’t be getting the subject prize for further. It really came as a shock, as I was certain I had the highest SAC average among the cohort. I really don’t understand why I wasn’t given the subject prize — the student who got it has lower SAC marks than me, and AFAIK I did better than her on the trial exam as well.

I know the subject prize shouldn’t be a big deal, but I really thought I had it in the bag and I am so, so disappointed to find out that all my efforts this year went unrecognised. I mean, it’s not my ultimate goal, but some acknowledgement would've been nice. I know this is such a trivial thing to upset over, but I had been working towards it all year. It was just so crushing to me, and I know I am overreacting but gosh I really thought I had it, and I’m just so disappointed to find out I wasn’t successful.

(Please excuse my pettiness)

I didn’t get the award for methods either, though that was expected since I did badly on the U3 AOS1 SAC. And I never had a chance in bio and chem anyway.

I know the main thing is the exam. If I do well I can certainly still dux further, prove my teachers wrong, but I’m just feeling so unmotivated to study for it right now.

Sorry for such a depressing and overly dramatic rant. We shall now take a slightly more cheery turn for the rest of this post.

What’s coming

Graduation is coming, and I am having mixed feelings. On one hand, I am so glad I can finally be one step closer to freedom; on the other hand, I know I will still absolutely bawl my eyes out. Next, there is SWOTVAC, then finally, the long-awaited exams shall greet us with open arms.

My main plan is to work on maths, as I’m confident further and methods will both be in my top 4 along with music and literature. Bio and chem are guaranteed bottom 2, but still I don’t want to do too badly on them either. So here’s my exam prep checklist:

   - Do the 2019 NHT papers under exam conditions
   - Do CAS exercises every day
   - Redo all the questions I got wrong in past papers and trial exams
   - Write my own exam for further and methods

My methods teacher has challenged me to write my own exam 1 paper as revision. She said that there is no better way to improve than to see if I understand the concepts enough to come up with my own questions. I found that it really helped, so now I’m working on a methods exam 2 paper as well! (Though I’m only doing short answer questions as I think MCQ is a bit redundant).

I might post my exams in the coming weeks, after I get my methods teacher to check it over.

Reflection

Yeah that’s right, cheesy reflection questions a-coming! I stole the questions from a previous VCE journal (specifically this post).

Spoiler
What was your greatest accomplishment in high school?
I would say surviving. Nothing can possibly top that.
Aside from that, proving my lit teacher and the school wrong. I wasn't among the strongest English students from year 7 to year 10 so the school refused to let me do literature as my early 3/4, and after tons of emails, meetings with English teachers, and eventually even the principal, I was allowed in last-minute. It was a nice feeling when I finally smashed their low expectations of me ;D

What was your most memorable event in high school?
Year 12 musical! We did Wicked and I loved every single second of it.
Our 2019 inter house chorals competition was also memorable for all the wrong reasons. My house had won chorals 4 years in a row and this year we had our strongest ever music cohort  (including a student who was once a finalist on the Voice), so everybody expected us to win. Then we stuffed up majorly on stage and came second last, ruining our streak and our reputation. And yes I am petty enough to forever remember that day.

What was your favourite / least favourite extracurricular activity?
Favourite(s): Orchestra! I’ve been in the school orchestra since year 7 and I’ve grown emotionally attached to everything about it.
Least favourite: Can’t really think of one. After all, I only did extracurricular that I liked. If I had to answer I’d say the school frisbee team, which I was unofficially a part of in year 9

What was one class you’ve always looked forward to / dreaded going to?
Looked forward to: Music! This year it’s probably methods because I refuse to say further (yes I am still cut)
Dreaded: Certain parts of chem and bio. Though I wouldn’t say dreaded. I just liked them less.

What was your most embarrassing moment?
Our biology teacher this year is a recent uni graduate with a baby face. At the start of the year, I mistook him for a student on exchange and asked him what year he was in.
To this day, I cannot look at him in the eye.

Do you have any regrets about high school?
Yes. So many. I wish I was more involved with sport and other extracurriculars, as well as leadership. And there are so many people who I’ve hardly talked to throughout the 6 years of high school (especially int’l students) who I wish I got to know more.
I also wish I did physics instead of biology. And doing 7 subjects was really unnecessary lmao.

If you could give one advice to the younger year levels, what would it be?
Do not be afraid to take risks and do things which seems difficult. If you want to study a subject, but don't think you'd be able to handle the workload, just do it anyway. If you want to try out for a leadership position but think your resume isn't as impressive as the other students trying out, don't back out. If your school isn't running a subject you dream of doing, challenge it. You never know how things could work out.

I might update again just before exams just to vent out my feelings and whatnot, or I might see you after November 12th. Either way, we’re approaching the end of the tunnel. To the class of 2019, you’ve all worked so, so hard this year. So hold on - just a bit more - the end is near!

Colline xx

I mean, it’s not my ultimate goal, but some acknowledgement would've been nice. I know this is such a trivial thing to upset over, but I had been working towards it all year. It was just so crushing to me, and I know I am overreacting but gosh I really thought I had it, and I’m just so disappointed to find out I wasn’t successful.

(Please excuse my pettiness)

I just had to reply because you just articulated EXACTLY how i felt last year! I worked my butt off in Psych, and when the time came for awards to be announced, I was really sure it was going to be me...and it wasn't. Of course you are 100% right that it doesn't matter, but I was really crushed and my confidence in the subject lowered a little. So, yeah, it's okay to feel disappointed.

Anyway, I ended up duxing-  so, I guess what I'm trying to say is don't let this UNmotivate you and instead let it make you work even harder! Based on your trial scores, I'm sure you will smash it :))
