Ethnolect VS Language Variety

There has been some debate and confusion over ethnolects and language variety within my group of friends. Particularly with Singapore-English (most commonly Singapore Colloquial English (SCE) or Singlish), there is a divide within my friend-group on this topic. As a Singaporean, I believe SCE is a language variety. This is because ethnolects are asociated with ethnic groups or cultural subgroups. However, Singaporeans are not an ethnic group. Singapore consists of many ethnic groups all clustered into that country and SCE is their common 'language'. Am I not wrong that SCE is a language variety instead of an ethnolect?
