Hey guys who do some English tutors charge like $100 an hour? While some university students only charge like $40?
What makes the price skyrocket and what is so special about someone who charges more?

Tutoring is a business and as such different people charge different rates. You need to shop around (so to speak) and find out what they can offer you individually. It may be that somebody who charges $40 is individually better for you than the person who charges $100, or vice versa.

The only people I have known to charge such a high fee of around the $100s are experienced teachers or tutors who have had several years of experience and have a proven record of success. I know a fair few teachers where I work/used to work who privately tutor for around the $80 an hour mark.
Experience in teaching at both secondary and tertiary levels.

In your opinion may I ask is $100 an hour worth it? Unfortunately the tutors who charge hundreds are too expensive for my reach.

probably not. Especially if they are not solely focused on tutoring and teaching on the side.

I would say it depends on the tutor (e.g. are they the chief examiner for VCE English? etc) but there are plenty of great tutors who scored well in English + have good percentage of students scoring 40+s/45+s etc who charge 25% to 50% of that rate.

You certainly can't "buy" a good score the student still needs to do the work through the year and sit the exam themselves but for some students it will help.

Yeah I agree, it is not worth it at all and $100 per an hour is a very huge sum. I also heard they charge for marking essays outside of hours....geez talk about a very experienced tutor. I think university students are capable of tutoring well too, namely people who attended elite private schools and did well in their subjects. University students charge like half or lower than what the very experienced teacher charges.

I would suggest that attending an elite private school isn't all that connected to being a great tutor but aside from that I agree with the perspectives in this thread - $100 for one hour of tutoring is unlikely to be worth it.

Very right, not all students attending those schools would be a good tutor and $100 per an hour is way too overpriced. The main reason why it cost that much is because if you are a bad student those teachers probably could whip you up to shape.

Also what price would you guys pay for tutor? If you would like to hire one.

Adding onto my previous post - The rates that a tutor charges per hour always going to be indicative of their their actual ability as a tutor.

Also as Bri MT mentioned going to an elite private school doesn't make someone a good tutor automatically.

As for prices I can't really say just look around for tutors that you believe are decently priced and whether they actually help you.

Yeah so true, I think ones that can actually make a difference will matter most as opposed to one who is just expensive. Btw speaking of tutors, I know this one teacher who teaches at Xavier College and tutors while juggling work at the same time. Those Xavier kids are really lucky to have him as their actual teacher. Btw does anyone know who the chief examiner of English is? and where he teaches?
