Hello I have attached my essay I would appreciate feedback for my essay and what mark out of 20. I have found my teacher to be very bias in marking.
Thank-you.

The question is satire can be gentle or savage incisive or vague, but it always highlights a serious concern. we had to compare animal farm to a related text.

Satire is often used to achieve social or political change. Satire can be gentle or savage, incisive or vague, however, regardless of this, it is bound to always highlight a serious concern. This essay will explore how George Orwell’s novel ‘Animal Farm” uses satire vaguely to portray the effects of power, and how it can often lead to ramifications comprising of corruption and oppression. In an oppositional sense, Lawrence Ferlinghetti’s poem “Two Scavengers in a truck Two Beautiful People in a Mercedes” utilises satire incisively to emphasise the difference between two types of people: the poor working class and the elite rich.
George Orwell’s novel ‘Animal Farm’ uses satire vaguely to highlight the hypocrisy of the pigs. Within the novel, the pigs declare that animals are not to imitate human actions however, they contradict this predicament as they, themselves begin to impersonate human beings by wearing clothing. Furthermore, the pigs place emphasis on this as they had previously stated in the third commandment that no animal shall wear clothes. “The pigs took Mr jones clothes out of the wardrobe and put them on”. Here, Orwell utilises these ideas in a way that encompasses the ideology of ultimate irony and reversal. Orwell uses irony to demonstrate the pigs hypocrisy, and emphasises the fact that they are going against their own commandments and what they have disclosed. The concept of reversal is used to establish the opposition of normal order. In a society where human beings are well recognised by covering themselves, animals are free to live as they wish – that is, with no clothes. This raises, and implicitly highlights the a serious concern as Orwell sets the tone of the novel as one, whereby animals are in a place of power, and relevant wisdom – opposite to social norms currently. Moreover, the pigs state that no animal shall walk on two legs “it was a pig walking on hind legs”. Here, Orwell uses the technique of irony and incongruity to emphasise the hypocrisy. This is ironic as traditionally pigs are known to walk on four legs, now that Orwell imaginatively articulates them walking on hind legs raises the concern as to how they are losing their individual identity in pursuit of searching for something which they are not. Additionally, incongruity is used to accentuate the fact that the pigs are trying to become more like humans despite their ongoing hatred built towards them. Therefore, Orwell uses satire vaguely to highlight a serious concern, constituting the hypocrisy of the pigs.

Lawrence Ferlinghetti’s poem “Two scavengers in a truck two beautiful people in a Mercedes” uses satire incisively to highlight a serious concern in society. Ferlinghetti poetically articulates the difference between two types of people; the working class and the elite rich, and how society perceives each class. Ferlinghetti explains, “Looking down into an elegant open Mercedes with an elegant couple in it”. The poet purposely, and ironically positions the “garbagemen” in a superior position looking down onto the “elegant couple” in a way that reverses the natural order from a social stance, as those of the elite class are quite fond of looking down at those of inferior standards in comparison to them. The poet also uses repetition to alert us to his sarcasm as he repeats “elegant” to emphasise their vanity. Ferlinghetti does this to suppress these stigmas within society, and nurture a new perspective – that all people are alike and should be treated as nothing less than equal. Furthermore, Ferlinghetti emphasises the abnormal situation as the red light is holding two sets of completely different people that would normally not associate with each other to reinforce the notion that no matter what social class you belong to you are prone to cross paths,  “the very red light for an instant holding all four close together”. Here, Ferlinghetti uses incongruity to demonstrate the ironic venture, and in turn bring awareness to the serious concern at hand – that all individuals regardless of social status should be perceived equally. The poet further emphasises this through the irony that stems from the fact that regardless of wealth and stature, the people from opposite sides of the spectrum are prone to cross paths regardless.  Thus, Ferlinghetti uses satire incisively to highlight a serious concern; that is the difference between the working class and the elite rich, and how society perceives each class.

George Orwell novel, Animal Farm uses satire vaguely to highlight the inequitable distributions in the farm hierarchy. The pigs declare in the seventh commandment that all pigs are equal, but they themselves begin to unfairly treat other animals. The pigs make a agreement with the farm animals whatever they harvest will be distributed equally amongst all animals. However, this was not implied and the other animals began to question the inequitable distribution. Squealer is trying to convince the other farm animals that they only eat the milk and apples to preserve their health to maintain order in farm. “you do not imagine, I hope that we pigs are doing this in the spite of spirit of selfishness and privilege? Many of us dislike milk and apples I dislike them myself.” Here Orwell uses incongruity and irony to highlight a serious issue a utopic society that has been built on the farm. Incongruity is used to highlight the abnormality of the of the situation in which the pigs don’t enjoy eating apples and milk but do it to preserve their health. Irony is used to emphasise the fact that the pigs had no real impact of participation as they make all the animals do the work for them and still take all rations to themselves despite the commandment stating all animals are equal. The animals have began questioning the pigs about equal distribution squealer says if the pigs don’t eat well Mr jones will take over the farm again and Old majors dream of animal farm will be lost. “surely there is no one among you who want to see jones comeback?”. The form of satire Orwell uses is exaggeration and irony. Orwell exaggerates the fact that if the pigs don’t eat well and maintain order Mr jones will take over the farm and old majors dream of animal farm will be lost. This is ironic as the pigs state in the seventh commandment that all animals are equal, and they do not abide by it and treat the rest of the animals unfairly. The other animals are doing all the hard work and the pigs are doing nothing. Therefore, Orwell uses satire to vaguely highlight a serious issue about a utopic society that has been built on the farm and can be seen in todays society.

Lawrence Ferlinghetti poem “Two scavengers in a truck two beautiful people in a Mercedes” uses satire incisively to highlight a serious concern and how society prevails the elite class and wealthy class in a democratic society. The garbagemen are looked down upon in society. “the older of the two with grey iron hair and hunched back looking like some gargoyle Quasimodo”. Here Ferlinghetti uses exaggeration as well as simile to emphasise his key ideas. Exaggeration is used to describe how the garbagemen are portrayed to society they are perceived as ugly and compared to gargoyle Quasimodo. Simile is used as the poet describes the garbage men as gargoyle Quasimodo which is seen as scaring off the evil spirits just like the garbagemen eliminating us from evil spirits keeping us safe from diseases. America is a democratic society but people will be far apart from each other “across the small gulf in the high sea  Of this democracy”. Here, Ferlinghetti uses a oxymoron and irony to emphasise his key ideas about a democratic society. The poet uses a significant oxymoron to contradict America democratic society which allows the readers to think of the ironic situation of rich and poor in the poem and in American society “the small gulf” of the democracy. It is small because they are close to each other at the lights. But it is really a gulf in wealth and status and, ironically, we can see this social gulf even better when the people are placed physically close to each other by the poet. Therefore, Ferlinghetti uses satire incisively to highlight a serious concern regarding America democratic society a vast place where people will be far apart from each other-not close and not equal.

Inconclusion, Satire can be gentle or savage, incisive or vague, however, regardless of this, it is bound to always highlight a serious concern. George Orwell novel ‘Animal Farm” uses satire vaguely to portray the effects of power, and how it can often lead to ramifications comprising of corruption and oppression. In an oppositional sense, Lawrence Ferlinghetti’s poem “Two Scavengers in a truck Two Beautiful People in a Mercedes” utilises satire incisively to emphasise the difference between two types of people: the poor working class and the elite rich.
