Katie’s journey back to the classroom (music education)!!

Hey, I’m Katie! Most of you have probably seen me around the forums and I’m following on from my HSC journal here. As the title suggests I’m beginning a bachelor of music/bachelor of education (secondary) at UNSW at the end of next month. It’s a five year course so I should finish in 2022 (when I’m 22). I’ve wanted to become a teacher for a while so I’m really excited about starting soon.

How did I get into the course?
After HSC, there’s a bunch of different things that you need to do to get into any music degree. In mid-November, I needed to do an online musicianship test for UNSW. It was 30 minutes long and had 40 multiple choice questions on areas such as clefs, notes, scales, triads, chords, score reading and general knowledge. Once I passed the test, I then had to do an online audition which was due at the end of November. This included two contrasting pieces, a reference, music resume, short essay and an unaccompanied short song (my singing was terrible), which I needed to upload through dropbox. I was then emailed the second week in December that my audition was successful and the atar for guaranteed entry was 80, which was an amazing feeling! On the day of atar release I received an email for guaranteed entry!

Why do I want to be a teacher?
I had to answer this for a teaching statement last year and had no idea what to say.
I have wanted to become a music teacher since around year 5 where I wanted to be able to teach young kids how to play a musical instrument. Throughout high school I have had music teachers that I have really loved as well as those that I haven’t enjoyed their classes or teaching style as much. I would love to be able to explain difficult musical concepts (especially those that I didn’t understand at first) clearly to a class in a way that they can understand easily. I want to be able to share my passion for music with kids and be a class that everyone can enjoy and escape from the stress of everyday life. I would also like to be able to help out with a schools band and encourage students to try and learn an instrument.

Me and music:
I’ve played the clarinet since year 3, so I’m starting on my 11th year this year. I’m probably doing grade 7 AMEB performance halfway through the year on my clarinet. I also play beginner saxophone and piano however I don’t sound fantastic and need heaps more practise, and love listening to music.

My units:
This semester I am doing 4 units (3 for music and 1 for education). They are:
-   MUSC1101: Music reinvented (Musicology course)
-   MUSC1602: Materials and structures 1 (Musicianship course)
-   MUSC1701: Performance Lab 1 (Performance course)
-   Social perspectives in education

My timetable
It’s a bit annoying I had planned all my classes to be in 3 days and then one of the tutes filled up so on Wednesdays I have to go into uni for an hour, and I have a 1 ½ hour trip there.
Spoiler

Overall I’m really excited but I’m also a bit nervous as I don’t know anybody from my school that is going to UNSW.

Please leave questions and comments here!  :D

19/2/18:
UNSW O-week!!:
- A lot of people
- Heaps of societies (signed up to Edsoc, History society and Artssoc)
- Lots of freebies (pens/highlighters, sausage sizzle, cupcakes)
- Timetable tours with Rui-even though I’ll still probably get heaps lost.
- Max Brenner (chocolate pizza, and accidentally spilling half my drink).

Had an amazing time seeing the NSW AN crew again!! Was heaps of fun! :D

Thinking about going into the uni tomorrow to go to the education/music lectures so I can meet more people from my course. Really excited but kinda a little nervous because I am really shy around new people/people I don’t know.

I also need to go in on Thursday for a peer mentoring kickoff session. My mentor sounds pretty cool (she’s a 3rd year music/science student) so hopefully that will be fun! :)

O-week day 2:

Bumped into Fantasticbeasts this morning and went to an essay lecture with them which was really boring (cool seeing her though)!!

As part of my course (for per lab 1) you need to be a part of the uni’s ensembles. I signed up to Wind Symphony which is on Tuesdays from 4-6. It should be really fun and looks cool! It’s a little annoying though because it’s on the same night as Girl’s Brigade (a Christian youth group) and I lead the year 3 group with a few of my friends so I’ll be late for that each week.

I then went to an education and music lecture! After the education lecture they had free food and some games by the education society. I got to talk to some other education students and they seemed pretty nice. There is also another Caitlin doing exactly the same course as me!!

I’m also thinking of doing volunteering at the uni. I need to do volunteering as part of my Queens Award for Girls Brigade (2hrs a week for 6-10 months) and some of the ones at uni seem fun! I’m not exactly too sure what ones I want to do yet though.

I just did the uni libraries compulsory ELISE quiz and got 100% which is good!

I’m finding the travel into uni really exhausting-at the moment it’s been 1 1/2-2 hours each way (a train and then a bus)!

I'm pretty sure we are doing exactly the same units! Not too sure about studio/tute times though. (I've had a Caitlin in my class since primary) :)

Definitely wasn't Atar Notes quality  ;)
Just been listening to music on the train at the moment but will try to use it for work when uni starts.

Great to see you today!! Felt bad for being on my phone during the lecture but it just wasn't interesting/engaging!

I went to the arc volunteering stall and got a booklet of all the volunteering (theres over 30). At the moment I'm thinking of doing Shack Tutoring (1hr tutoring on an afternoon for disadvantaged high schoolers) and Phil (help fundraising for Sydney Children's hospital and music therapy) but not entirely sure yet.

I was both really nervous and excited going into uni this morning. I went to the station 2 hours before my lecture started because I wasn’t really sure where my building was and if there would be a huge line for the bus. As I got to the station, my train to Central was leaving (luckily there was one 10min later). There was no line up for the bus which was great so I ended up at uni around 30min before the lecture started.

MUSC1101 (Music reinvented):
I actually have a friend in this class from band (she is doing it as a gen ed unit). Before the lecture started we made a big circle outside the room and went around saying our names and instruments. The lecture wasn’t as large as I was expecting (probably only 40ish people) and the lecturer himself was quite interesting. We were looking at the history of music and it was great to be getting back into history! We also listened to a lot of different excerpts of pieces as we learnt more about the composer’s/time periods. The lecture was 2 hours long and because I haven’t been in a class for a while it seemed like a huge amount of time. I still haven’t really decided if I’m going to write or type my notes. I found it confusing to know what to write down in this lecture as the PowerPoints will be on Moodle and we have no exams on the entire course.

I had a one-hour break in between this lecture and my next one. I went to get lunch with one of my friends who is in my peer mentoring group and we ate it in the study area of the music building.

MUSC1601: M&S1
We started by going through the course outline- we need to buy an online aural program and a textbook (it was $200 from the shop :(, going to try to get it second-hand). Then the lecturer gave us a quiz to begin. The first page was stuff that I was completely fine with but I couldn’t do the last question. Me and my friend also realised that we were enrolled in the wrong tutorial. The one we are enrolled in is for arts/gen ed students (the harmony tute) while we should be in one on a Friday (aural tute). It’s really annoying because that means I will need to be in uni for all 5 days (with 2 only being for 1 hr tutes). I really didn’t want to go to uni on my birthday. The lecturer said that he will look at our test results and the BMus students and then see if we need to change and send emails.

I also have a music locker which is really good because I can put my clarinet and stuff in it. Tomorrow, I need to be at uni from 9-6 (2 lectures and an ensemble) and I’m not really looking forward to the early start or the long day. Overall, uni's been pretty exciting/interesting though!! :D

Week Two:
I brought a ticket to the Arts society orientation camp last Friday, which is on the 23rd-25th of March. I’m pretty excited to go to the camp, and hopefully make heaps of friends, but I’m also nervous that I’ll be with 125 other first years who I don’t know very well (and this camps going to be heaps different to my school camps as well).

At the moment I’m finding my education lectures and tutes seem really boring and slow which was not what I was expecting seeing I was really excited for my education unit. It’s different from music where I am enjoying all of my classes (except for some of the theory).

I’m finding wind symphony really fun at the moment, theres heaps of clarinets and it sounds amazing being around great musicians. The pieces are a bit difficult though so I’m going to have to practise seeing I get assessed on it.

I’m definitely getting sick of ice breakers, speed friending and introductions, but I am starting to get familiar with everyone in music (even if I don’t know a huge amount of names yet). I’ve also bumped into a few people from AN at uni, which has been great! :D

8/3/18:
We began an aural studio today for M&S1. In this studio, we have to sing and work on our pitch. This was something that I was really nervous about, mainly because I don’t sing at all. However, the teacher was really good and it turned out to be a fun class, although I still felt a little weird singing (hopefully that goes away soon). We mainly just went through some scales and warm up stuff today but we’ll do more next week.

We also Performance Lab this afternoon. My studio only has around 15 people so it’s pretty small compared to everything else. Today, we went through general stuff on musician’s health (like posture, warming up,etc.). However, for our next studio we need to each play a 3 minute piece to the class. We need to do it formally (with walking on from the side, & bowing and stuff). It should be good but I still need to pick a piece for it (the one’s i’m working on at the moment are around 4-6 minutes).

I didn’t have to move the music tute to Friday so I have the day off tomorrow, which is going to be great. My little brother wants me to come in to watch his item at school. :)

Week Three
I was going to try to do a vlog this week but didn’t get around to it (will definitely be next week!!).

Monday
I began with my music reinvented lecture and tute which was on Impressionism and the composers Debussy and Ravel. I have an assessment for this due on Wednesday which is a 400-500 word definition of either modernism, impressionism or nationalism using three specific sources. However, I’m still unsure what topic to pick as they follow on for each assessment, finishing in a 2000 word essay.
I then had the M&S theory lecture which I found really boring and a bit hard as my theory isn’t really up to the right standard yet. I have a test next week on the stuff that we have covered (cadences, triads, inversions, chords, passing/neighbor/anticipating tones) and I’m a bit stressed that I won’t go well.

Tuesday
Was another long 10-6 day! It began with the education societies PASS workshop for my upcoming assessment (next week). It was pretty helpful as it went over everything that we needed to do in order to get a good mark. For our assessment, we need to do an article analysis, about the ‘educational imagination’, which was actually really difficult to read. I’m about halfway through the assessment now. I then had the education lecture which was extremely boring. I find that because we have only just come out of school we understand the environment/inequity’s, and teenagers. The lecture was on the role and influence the family and peers. I always find that these 2 hour lectures seem to drag on and are really slow.

Afterwards, I booked a music practice room (you need to swipe your card to get in which is pretty cool), and practiced some of my pieces. For my performance exam, I need to play a 5 minute study and another 15 minutes of pieces, so I need to perfect those in around 12 weeks. I also got my first ever perf Lab critique back and went better than expected, but had heaps of feedback on my referencing. I then had wind symphony which is sounding really good! I’m finding that I can pick up more of the pieces as the weeks are progressing, however I still need to practice some parts. They have a social bowling event next Monday, but I can't go because I have clarinet lessons.

Wednesday
Going all the way (1hr 30min) into uni for a 1hr tute is really annoying. For the first half of the tute we went over the assessment and then we went over the ‘hidden curriculum’ and different teaching styles.

Thursday
We began with the aural (singing) tute. I still find this a little weird but it was a fun class. We were spilt into four different parts and started doing some harmony stuff. I then had the theory tute where we went over stuff for the test. I also brought the theory textbook today secondhand! Feeling slightly more confident for the test but am still nervous and need to study.

I also got an email today rejecting me for the volunteering that I had applied for (because I couldn’t attend the 4-hour training day at uni), which was annoying. I need to do 2 hours of volunteering a week for 6-10months for my award so if anyone has any suggestions that would be great!!

I had my birthday yesterday and turned 18 and we went out for dinner at a buffet place in Wollongong!! I also have Ed Sheeran tonight which I’m really excited about (but the transport homes going to be crazy)!! I hope everyone’s had a great week!!

RE: volunteering - depends what's near you and whether you're interested, but is it possible to help out at a school? I feel like the fact that you're an education student might help you with that. One of my housemates is an education student (doing primary, granted) and volunteers at a local primary school with their literacy program.

Otherwise, try a local sporting club or a hospital (these can be really good because you can often organise to volunteer in a certain shift, so you have that same period of time allotted each week). Or, if you live near a beach (and don't mind a bit of gardening stuff), there's quite often volunteer groups that run to help revitalise the foreshore - keeping it clean, planting new plants, etc.
Otherwise I'd see if the local council has any helpful suggestions on their website! :)

Weeks 4 & 5

Decided to try the vlog format today!!
My First Ever Vlog!!

More on Arts society camp!
I went to camp feeling really nervous as I didn’t really know too many people who were going and what the camp was going to be like. There were 125 other first years, around 20 leaders and other executive members there. Everybody was doing a subject under the faculty of arts and social sciences so it was very varied (e.g media, education, music, criminology, arts). Therefore, there were only three other people doing a music degree there.

The camp was sport themed for this year, and we also had a sports themed Saturday night party where everyone dressed up. We were split into 10 different groups, and did majority of the activities in our teams, (mine was the Beasty Bears). Each team made up a war cry and at the end of the camp there was a competition for 1st, 2nd and 3rd with prizes (We actually got 1st).

The camp mostly consisted of group games and activities in your teams. Some of them were really messy (like sock wrestling on soapy mats, or water fights), while others were based on communication within your teams. We also had a camp dance that we would do whenever we heard the song (‘forget you’). During the camp, we had pale blue camp shirts that we would wear for the majority of the time.

On the Saturday morning, they woke us up at 7am to do a sports themed bootcamp!  :(  On the Friday night, we had a trivia night in our groups with games in between the questions. Then, on the Saturday night, we had a sports themed party. I’m not a party person (& don’t drink much) so I didn’t really like the party as it was mainly alcohol and dancing and seen by some people as an excuse to get drunk. However, I did talk to a few friends afterwards which was really nice, and helped another friend who was drunk. We ended up going to bed really late both nights and were exhausted by the Sunday.

The camp food (especially the dinners and breakfasts) wasn’t actually really good though, so it was good to go home to nicer food :) .

Overall, I made quite a few friends at camp which was really good!!  :D

Omg you went to the Arts Camp? One of my friends went there as well! (well, I'm assuming this because her shirt said Arts Camp 2018 lol) Judging from her snapchat stories, it looked really fun. I think part of the experience in camps in general is how bad the food is xD (never been to a camp where the food was amazing).

Yep, the link works now!

And I agree with you on music theory- theory is so boring; I would fall asleep whenever my piano teacher would get me to do an exercise on theory!

Wow! :) What was your friend's name?
Michelle was my friend's name! (Pretty sure she studies Media specialising in PR and advertising at UNSW).

Mid-Sem Break
Didn’t actually get as much done this week as I had wanted to. I spent a lot more time procrastinating then doing any assessments or studying. I started one of my assessments but only did around 230 words out of the 500.

I ended up going to the SOAP (Wind symph/orchestra’s society) bushwalk to Bundeena and it was pretty good. My peer mentor is the president of the society and she led the walk so I knew her and another first year fairly well but met three other people in the ensembles. It was an 8km return walk to wedding cake rock and a beach. We went swimming afterwards at both the beach at the walk (which had a really bad undertow though) and the beach at Bundeena (which was a lot calmer). Here’s a link to some pictures of the day!

We had Greek Easter at my cousin’s house on Sunday and it was a great day with some really good Greek food (I like the pastitso- Greek lasagne, and souvlaki).

Week 6!
Monday
I started with my music reinvented lecture today that was mainly on the music of Stravinsky and Bartok. I prefer this lecture to some of my others as we listen to lots of different musical excerpts throughout and it isn’t just the lecturer talking about stuff on the PowerPoint. I had to do an assignment for this unit that was due today (Thursday) which was a mini 400-500-word bio on Debussy’s early life and how this affected his subsequent musical compositions.

In the tute, straight after the lecture we talked about a listening test we have coming up and did a bit of practise for it. For this test, we need to be able to recognise any piece from our listening list (of 17 pieces that are 20min long) and write the name of the piece, movement, composer, genre, and 25 words about technique/historical significance of the piece. I’ve made a table with some of my friends so we can do this easier but it sounds like a lot of work.

Afterwards, I had the theory lecture and while I understood some of it (on some of the minor keys/chords), it’s still not very interesting. It’s also one of the classes I wish was recorded so I could go over what I didn’t understand well the first time (but It’s one of my 2 courses that isn’t).

Tuesday/Wednesday
I started with my education lecture at 12, and really just zoned out .. almost the whole time. I’m hoping that the education units next sem are a lot better because this one is just really slow and boring. I was honestly just switching through tabs for around 85% of the time. The tute on Wed wasn’t any better and we spent almost all the time going over 5 definitions from the lecture & textbook.  I got my marks back for the article analysis today (Tuesday) though and ironically it’s been my best mark at uni so far (80%)!

Thursday
Today, I started with the aural choir (singing). We mainly just did warm ups, and then some pieces with four-part harmony. The pieces themselves aren’t very exciting but it does sound pretty good with us all together. It’s my second last week of peer mentoring so after the studio, we all met up at Cuco Cubana to have lunch together! We doing trivia against the other groups next week and having a breakfast the week after. Then, I had my theory tute, which was revision on what we had done in the last two lectures (on suspensions, and minor scales/chords). We have a test for this in my tute next week that I really need to study for.

Also, just checked and I think I have to be at uni all five days next sem  :'(.

Wind Sympth concert
Tomorrow, I have my first concert for the Wind symphony, called Suites and Treats. It’s at Clancy auditorium (where we normally rehearse) at uni from 7. The orchestras playing the 1st half and then were playing the 2nd. I’m also ushering with some of my 3rd clarinet friends at the start of the concert, basically just handing out programs and making sure everyone has a ticket. It should be heaps of fun!! :D
Hope everybody had a great week!! :D

Week 7
Were finally halfway through the semester which is good because I’m starting to really want more holidays (doesn’t help that my siblings are off at the moment. However, I’m starting to get into my more major assessments now which are a lot more work than before.

Monday
For my music reinvented lecture, we started with the music of Shostakovich & Prokofiev. We then went into the music of Germany between the wars, when Hitler was coming to power and looked at the composers Hindemith and Weill. We had a reading to do for the tute today on musical signs and meaning (such as index, symbols and icons), and I was the only person in the class finish it (on the train in the morning). It was a little annoying as he asked me to summarise it to the class and I couldn’t really remember it well enough as I’d read it at 8 in the morning.

For this subject, we have an essay due next week on Wednesday on Impressionism and Symbolism. It’s a 2000 word essay worth 45% and the essay question itself is really wordy. I also got told that some of my sources need to be more sophisticated/uni level in my last assignment but it really difficult to read heaps of dense academic sources (I’ve had to look up the meaning of words quite a few times). I haven’t been very motivated to do this essay even though I really like history. It’s Saturday now and I’m still only just finishing researching the essay!

Afterwards, I had the theory lecture which was on modulation, tonicisation and secondary dominant chords. I left still feeling a bit confused so it’s definitely something that I’ll need to go over. We have a test next week on what we’ve learnt which I’ll really need to study for as well.
Tuesday/Wednesday
I started with my performance Lab masterclass at 9am! The masterclasses are something that I’m still not used to-in a way it’s like a private studio lesson but with an audience. So, we had four different piano players and they began by just playing their pieces and then we had a teacher help them improve in certain areas. It was pretty interesting, but then again I have a limited knowledge of piano techniques.

For performance Lab I need to do a workshop next Thursday where I play a piece (I’m doing the 2nd Brahms clarinet sonata 2nd movement) and talk about the history/analysis of the piece. It needs to go for 5-10 minutes and I’m not very good at speeches so I’m a little worried about the talking after the piece. I tried to get piano accompanist for the piece and asked three different groups but everybody was busy but I think I’ve found a backing track that could work!

Afterwards, I had my education lecture which was on culture and cultural identities and talked a lot about multiculturalism within schools. I’m still zoning out and switching in between AN, the lecture slides and Facebook which I never would have done last year at school! For the tute on the Wednesday, we mainly talked about the assessment which is due in around 2 weeks. It is 1800 words and we have to do an analysis of 3 different journal articles/book chapters, and talk about a specific school that addresses the needs of students in 2 different areas (I’m probably doing my school).

For Wind Sympth, we got some new pieces for our rehearsals which we’ll work through for our next concert but they are pretty difficult at the moment.
Thursday
We had the singing studio again and just started with some warmups and scales. Our tutor then split us up into groups of around 20 people, and we have to learn a song in our smaller groups. It’s an older song called ‘If ye love me’ and we need to perform it to the class in two weeks. I’m still not very confident with the singing really.

We then had a test in my harmony theory tute, which was easier than I expected so I’m really hoping it goes well. We had to identify chords that were in a passage as well as some non-harmonic tones (such as neighbour/passing/escape tones and suspensions).

I then stayed back at uni for the artssoc toga party pres mainly to meet some of my friends from arts camp. The togas we needed to wear were a disgusting fluro/bright pink colour and looked pretty weird. The pres itself was pretty lame and not as good as what it had been hyped up to be. I mainly talked with my friends from camp and it really good to see them again. The bus that I was meant to get home came about 10 minutes late and there was trackwork on my line, so my dad had to pick me up at Revesby and it ended up taking 2 hours to get home.

Week 8
Stress, anxiety, assessments, AHHH!!
I only had uni for 2 ½ days this week but it still dragged on a lot and was more stressful then last week.

Monday
Spoiler
I started with my music reinvented lecture which was an intro to ethnomusicology. Ethnomusicology is the study of music in its cultural context and it’s a mix of ethnography and musicology. We were listening to some non-traditional music that sounded really weird and different to us.

For this unit, we had a 2000-word essay due on Wednesday night about Debussy, Symbolism and Impressionism. I left it a bit late, and had two really late nights (1am and 2am) because of it which was pretty stressful.

After the reinvented tute, I had a test during my theory lecture. I hadn’t really spent heaps of time studying for it because I started my essay that weekend. The test was more difficult then I expected though and I wasn’t able to finish the analysis in the 50 minutes.

Tuesday
Spoiler
Our education classes were cancelled this week because of the public holiday. Blasonduo and I, have an education assessment due next Tuesday, which is an analysis of three different articles and a school. At the moment, I’ve done 1200 words out of the 1800.

I only needed to be at uni from 4-6 for wind symph today. The new pieces that we got the other week are still pretty hard so I’m going to have to do some work on them for next week. Next week were doing sectional rehearsals, so it’s just going to be all of the clarinets together.

Thursday
Spoiler
I went to sleep at 2am this morning because I needed to finish my essay and then start my document for my performance workshop today- so I was pretty tired at uni. I started uni at 8:45 because I had an end of peer mentoring breakfast. We ended up staying there until 11 talking and eating (they had really good hash browns)!

At 11, I had the singing studio and we’re in groups at the moment. We have to perform a song in two weeks to the rest of the class. At the moment, we haven’t been able to completely run through the song once. Afterwards, I had the theory tute which was pretty boring again (we going were going through secondary dominant chords).

After the theory tute, I had my performance workshop which had to go for 5-10 minutes. I played the Brahms 2nd sonata 2nd movement and then had to talk about its history and analysis. As, I was about to start my workshop I realised the cord I would need for the backing track/stereo wasn’t in the room so we had to go down to the first level and get one from the tech guys.  I think the performance/workshop ended up ok, but I was feeling really nervous during & after it as we had to perform to our studio group.

Week 11 (only 2 weeks left!! :D)
At the moment, I’m definitely feeling ready for the holidays!

Assignments coming up:
-I have an ethnomusicology test worth 10% for Reinvented on Monday and then all of my assessments for the class will be done!
-I have an auralia theory test later this week for M&S and a composition due on the 25th of May.
-2000-word research report for Education due on the 5th of June.
-For performance, I still 70% left: my ensemble part-checking (wk 13) and my performance exam (wk15-exam period). We were meant to book our exams this morning except there were 2 different technical glitches, so I think we need to book tomorrow.

I skipped out on half of my education lecture this week because I had lunch with my little brother after he had a doctor’s appointment at the kid’s hospital. The lectures are still really boring and half of the time he reads off the slides so I’m not really missing much. We have someone from the department of education coming next week so that might be more interesting.

Timetable:
At the moment, I need to come in for 4 days next sem. It’s slightly better than this sem (no 1hr days!!) but it’s still not that great.
Timetable

Social Stuff:
Wind Symphony has our 2nd concert Friday next week which should be good! Even the most difficult piece, El Muro is finally starting to come together well! We got our SOAP hoodies on Tuesday, mines dark grey and is really warm! I’m going to a music society/SOAP cruise at the end of week 13, which is around Sydney harbour during vivid!

I’m going to a Phil charity concert tomorrow night at uni with my peer mentoring group which should be pretty good!

On the weekend, I have the metropolitan solo competition with my community band. I’m playing in the U19 Woodwind novice (really ironic that it’s novice, but I’ve never been in the competition before), U19 Woodwind and U19 slow melody. It would be great to get a place but should be a good experience anyway. Then on Sunday, I have an interview for my pioneer pin (which is the highest national award for Girls Brigade) which is also with two of my friends. I’m a bit worried because I am terrible at interviews.

He's ok, It was just a checkup appointment. He was really excited about being able to see me for lunch and I brought him a chocolate milkshake. I then gave him a really mini tour of uni (just the music building, my locker and the library). He's really obsessed with books at the moment so he loved the library  :D

Holidays/Marks release

Marks
Spoiler
My marks for this semester were emailed to me last night. They weren't incredibly high (especially considering some of the marks I've seen on AN) but I'm still fairly happy with them considering it's my first sem of uni.

Session Course    Title                           Result

========================================================

  T1    EDST1104  Social Perspectives in Edu.......76 DN
  T1    MUSC1101  Music Reinvented.................70 CR
  T1    MUSC1602  M&S1.............................62 PS
  T1    MUSC1701  Per Lab 1 (BMus).................64 PS
========================================================

At the moment my education unit is a lot better then my music ones, so hopefully I can work on improving those next semester. I was still pretty happy with M&S (the theory unit) though considering the poor marks of my first few assessments. I'm a little annoyed that my performance lab unit was 1 mark off a credit!

My WAM wasn't too high and was let down by some of my lower subjects. I still have 4.5 years left of uni though, so a lot of time to try and improve on my marks!

Holidays
Spoiler
At the moment, I'm starting to get bored of the holidays and the lack of routine. I'm looking forward to going back to uni and learning more. Next semester I'm doing a unit on educational psychology, Western Music:a panorama, and then M&S2/Performance Lab 2, which follows on from the 1st sem units.

I'm also possibly buying a professional wooden clarinet in these holidays! There pretty expensive so I've been saving up for a while to get one. It should have a better quality sound and intonation then the one that I have at the moment. :D

Week One

My siblings still have an extra week of holidays this week, so my family decided to go up to Coffs Harbour camping. I’ve got uni, and I didn’t really feel like camping anyway so I’ve stayed home. It's been really quiet which has been nice. One of the worst things at the moment is that it takes an extra 20 minutes to walk to/from the station so I’m having to leave home even earlier to get to uni.

Monday
Today, I had my 9am Western Music lecture. I ended up leaving home at around 7, and it was really freezing on the way to the station. We were going over music of the Renaissance today and some of the history behind it. We have another listening list for this unit, and our listening tests are worth 35%. I have both a test on the listening list and lecture content in week 4.

Tuesday
Surprisingly, I actually enjoyed my music theory lecture today. We were just going over revision from last semester on cadences. I found that this new lecturer spent more time going over the terms/definitions and then giving examples then the lecturer I had last sem. We also have a test in week 4 over the content of the lecture content we’ve learnt.

I then had my performance lab lecture. For the first 30 minutes, we had someone talk about how trimesters will affect our performance classes next year.  Each course next year will be 12UOC and go over the entire three terms. They are changing the structure of the classes a bit next year and we’ll only have one performance exam in the year compared to 2 this year. The rest of the lecture was incredibly boring and it ended up going for the entire 2 hours, when last sem almost all of our lectures finished early.

Wind sympth was fun today, and almost all of the clarinets came back for this sem.  We have a concert in week 12, which I think is just the wind symphony.

I think I’m going to have to do 3 speeches this semester which I’m really not looking forward to. For western music, I have to do a 5 minute presentation on a Schuman piece I’ve been assigned in week 8. For performance Lab, I think we have to present at another studio, and for education we have a 7-8 minute presentation on a topic given next week.

Thursday
I’ve signed up for one of the Bible studies at uni, so I have that tomorrow. I haven’t been to a Bible study since year 9, so hopefully it’s good. One of my friends from school has been talking to me about it and said she’s enjoyed it. I also have my first education lecture and I’m hoping it’s a lot better than last sem.

I brought Shawn Mendes tickets today and am going with my sister and a friend. I’m really excited except the concert is in November next year! I’m also going to buy/pick up my new clarinet on either Friday or Saturday which is really exciting.

Hope everyone’s having a great first week back!! :D

Weeks 3&4

Arts Ball
I had the Arts Ball on the Friday of week 3 at Doltone House in Hyde Park (which was fancier then my year 12 formal!). I met with two of my friends from the Arts camp so it was good to see and talk to them again. The food was really good; however, the music was too loud so it was a bit hard to talk to each other.
Photos:

Western Music:
So far we’ve been going through the history, and music of the Renaissance and Enlightenment period.  I have 2 tests tomorrow for this unit-one is on the lecture content of the past 3 weeks, and the other is a listening test. There’s 9 pieces on the listening test and we need to be able to recognise them and know their title, dates, composer, type of piece and features. Because the pieces are from the Baroque and Renaissance periods, some of them aren’t very interesting and are sung in Latin, so it’s a bit annoying having to listen to it over and over.

M&S/theory:
Surprisingly, I’m enjoying this course more then I was expecting (& more than last sem). I think this lecturer is explaining things in a way that is easier for me to understand. So far, we’ve been through chords in minor keys, secondary dominant chords and leading tone chords. We have a test on Tuesday about the lecture content, and another one on Wednesday for the rhythm workshop. The rhythm workshop part of M&S has been really boring so far as it’s been very simple stuff that I already know. The aural studio also been interesting, but there are things I’m going to need to work on more such as transcriptions.

Ed psych:
So far this has been incredibly boring! The lectures always seem to drag on and the lecturer has an accent that is hard to listen to sometimes. It’s my only class that doesn’t pass around the roll in lectures, so I could possibly choose not to go, but if I did I’d only have to at uni for an hour. I have a group presentation in week 5 on working memory-it seems that I have a good group and their pretty organised but I haven’t done much of my part yet. We also have a test in week 5, but its only 15 multiple choice so it shouldn't be too bad.

Performance Lab:
I had to perform last week (week 3) in my studio class. I was still pretty nervous because some of the people there weren’t in my performance class last sem. The lecturer gave me some feedback after my performance which I didn’t expect but was pretty helpful. Wind symphony has still been going really well.

I’ve started going to the Campus Bible study talks and a Bible study group and they have both been interesting at the moment and everyone’s been really nice.

Do you recommend going to the balls? I have Law ball but I am unsure if I should go!

Arts Ball was really expensive ($140ish!!) but the food was amazing and I did have a great night with my friends. It was a lot fancier then my year 12 formal which was kinda weird but the music was good and it was a fun night. I'm also looking at going to the Music Ball towards the end of September (which is cheaper!) and it will have my friends from Wind Sympth and class which should be really fun!  ;D

(Really good to see you around the forums again!! Hope you've been going good! Your Europe pictures looked amazing :) )

Week 5

- I ended up quitting my job last week (a lot of reasons but mainly I wasn’t getting a lot of shifts, or enjoying the work as much any more). As much as I would love a lot of free weekends, I’m going to need to get another job soon but I'm not too sure where yet.

- I’m not very keen to get my theory test marks back next week. Apparently the average was 57% and although I have been understanding the content, I don’t think that it showed up very well on the test. We got our transcription assessment today, where we have to fill in around 20 bars of a string quartet (we have a sound file) and a kinda half score. I’m terrible at transcriptions, so it’s going to need a lot of work.

- I had my group presentation for education yesterday-we had to do 7 minutes each and therefore it was around 30 minutes! I think it went pretty good, although I stumbled over a lot of my words and the experiment I’d planned didn’t really work out. Today, Blasonduo and I had a 15 mark (15%) multiple choice test for education. I wasn’t able to study heaps for it because the presentation was due on Wednesday. They had the questions on the screen (3 questions for 2 minutes) while we had an answer sheet. I found this a little annoying because when I do multiple choice, I normally go back to questions I’m not too sure on. When we finished, the lecturer said the answers and Blasonduo and I, both think we got 100% which I’m incredibly happy with.

- I’m in the SOAP team for the Phil’ Fun-A-Thon, which is 24 hours at uni aiming to raise money/fundraise for the children’s hospital in Randwick. It’s on the 11th of October so it’s still quite a while but it should be really fun.

- I’m going with one of my friends to a Girls Brigade-event planning training camp on the weekend which should be really fun (hopefully the foods better than last time!).

Hope everyones having a great week!  :D

I know you say you don't know where you want to work, but - any general ideas? Like, what sort of area would you be leaning toward?

I started my last job when I was 15 and it's the only job I've had-most of the time it's been really good :).

I have a certificate 2 in hospitality from last year so I could probably work at a cafe/restaurant. Otherwise, I did really enjoy working with kids so if I can find something fun (that isn't party hosting) that would be great!  ;D

I've heard indoor sports centres are decent, but I have no idea if that would be at all appropriate haha.

Week 13: Classes are finally over!!
Haven’t really updated in a while! I’m really excited that unis finished (only 2 assessments left)! I don’t have any plans for the holidays yet (still need to work on applying for another job), but it’ll be good to have no assignments and be able to sleep in. :)

Performance Lab: This is the only course where I still have assessments left (70%!!). I have my wind symphony concert tomorrow, which should be really fun. Next Tuesday, I have my part checking for wind symph and then on the 6th of November I have my performance exam. I’m playing these pieces for my exam: Arnold-Sonatina, Poulenc-Sonatina mvts 2&3, Cavallini Caprice 13 . I’ve had a few rehearsals with my piano accompanist and the pieces are starting to sound pretty good but still need heaps of work (especially with the metronome which I hate most of the time).

Western Music: We had a test last week that was worth 50%!! Half of it was on the lecture content that we’ve been though in class, while the other half was a listening test on these pieces (there were over 40!!). Also, I lost marks on my speech because my ‘words needed to be presented in slightly better German!’

Ed Psych: Was a little disappointed with my essay mark, but mainly because everything else has been pretty high. We had a multiple choice & short answer test on Wednesday which I think went well (although I think I stuffed up some of the questions!)

M&S2: I had a composition due last week and I had a list of different things I had to put in (Non-harmonic tones, types of chords, pivot chord, style of Beethoven/Schubert, etc). I put quite a bit of effort into it so I hope it goes well. I had sight singing today and basically, we went into the room in pairs and were given a line of music to sing. I definitely wasn’t very confident with this and I don’t think it went very well. It’s something I’m going to need to work on for next year (luckily it was only worth 5%).

I had to book the LANTITE test last weekend. We have to do these tests before we can enrol in our 2nd year placement unit. It cost $185 :(, and includes a literacy and numeracy test, which are both 2 hours long. There were both morning and afternoon sessions but by the time I booked only the morning session was available so mine is on the 26th of November starting at 7:30. Most of the online sample tests look really easy so I’m not too worried about the tests.

Good luck to everyone doing your HSC (and VCE soon) exams!! I hope they go really well!  ;D

- My marks came out last night and I've improved in almost everything from last semester so I'm pretty happy with them!

- I’m thinking about going on exchange at the end of 3rd year. I’ve been looking at it recently and it sounds so exciting!! I've never been overseas before so it would be really fun! I would need to save up a huge amount for it though!

- I’m doing grade 8 clarinet halfway through next year and there’s over 50 scales I need to memorise!

- I need to make my timetable on Friday for next year and so far I’m in every day except Thursdays. I have two 9am classes and also two 1 ½ hour days.

- I’m starting to get really bored of holidays already and there’s still around 3 months left!

THIS. Yes yes yes!!! I'm planning on going at the same time as you -- where are you thinking of going and for how long? Start saving now as well, but there are a ton of government and uni schemes to help you out so don't worry too much!

Not too sure yet-definitely needs to be English speaking though! I have a friend that does music and is on exchange this sem so I was going to talk to her about it and also go to the exchange expo in April and then decide. Will probably be there for around 4-6 months-enough time for a semester and to travel afterwards. If we end up close, we should meet up during exchange. :D

Week 1

I’m at uni 4 days a week this term: I have Thursdays off but on Mondays and Fridays I only have class from 9-10:30 which is really annoying.

M&S3: I was going to do some revision for my theory unit in the holidays but didn’t and I’ve forgotten a lot. Our lecture went over both revision and then new content (augmented 6th chords) and I was so confused walking out. Our lecturers the same one that I had at the start of last year, and he picks on people to answer questions which I really hate. Because of trimesters, our lecturers have also gone from 1hr to 1 ½ hours and it seemed to drag on. There is still nothing for this course on moodle yet.

Performance Lab: Was pretty boring this week, nobody brought our instruments because we didn’t want to perform first week back so our lecturer brought out her flute and talked about a piece. We all need to perform next week though, and I still haven’t decided on what piece to play. I also need to pay for 8th grade next week, which is coming up really soon. I still need to memorise heaps of scales for it though. I’ve started learning this concerto which is really nice!

Education (Language/Literacy/Numeracy): It was mainly introductory stuff to start off but it was pretty interesting. We had a true/false kahoot on literacy which was really fun! We have a hurdle task for this due on Wednesday-it’s only 300 words but I haven’t been motivated to start yet.

This year I get to pick a stream for music (which is kinda like a major but it’s only 3 units). We can choose from: creative practise (performance/composition but you need 80% in your performance exam to get into this), sonic arts, musicology or music pedagogy. I’ve chosen pedagogy (studio teaching/kids) for this and our first units in term 3.

I’m finding it really difficult to get a job at the moment which is getting really frustrating. So far I’ve applied to around 25 and I’ve only had one interview.

That certainly sounds annoying. Is there anything beneficial you can do at uni on those days to make it less bad? (eg study groups)

The concerto sounds fantastic! :) Would definitely be a lot of practice as well (at least relative to if I were to attempt a piece like that when I was doing sax)

It'll be interesting to see how well the pedagogy stream complements the education side of your degree and if many people in that stream are also doing the double degree. Hopefully you can find some good peers through that :)

:( Good luck with the job search - hopefully things pick up for you soon!

Yep, so far I have a Bible study on Mondays from 11-12, and then on Friday I've booked a practise room from 10:30-12. Then when I have more assessments and stuff I might stay back later to work on them.

The concerto sounds fantastic! :) Would definitely be a lot of practice as well (at least relative to if I were to attempt a piece like that when I was doing sax)

The concertos really nice!! I'm learning the first two movements this term/for grade 8 and then adding the last movement later. It's 20 minutes long which is going to be really long to play without breaks for my exam though.

I'm really excited for the pedagogy units. So far only 11 people have enrolled so it should be a small class. I think we might get to teach someone how to play our instruments so that should be cool.

:( Good luck with the job search - hopefully things pick up for you soon!
Thanks!! :)

I think sonic arts is more towards recording and producing music and how to use all the electronic stuff. This has more info  :)

Week 4
It’s almost halfway through the term which feels really weird because I’ve hardly had any assignments yet.

M&S3: We had a test this week, and I spent probably 95% of the education lecture beforehand trying to study and do practise questions/analysis. I’m still walking out of most lectures confused so I’ve almost used up half of my exercise book doing revision (& we’ve only had 3 lectures/tutes). The test wasn’t too bad: I definitely think I stuffed up some parts but overall I think I went ok. In our tutes we’ve been going over melodic dictation and then pieces on our listening list. I’m not very good at melodic dictation (& they’ve been getting harder every week) so I haven’t really been enjoying that part. In our studios we’ve been singing some Bach and Bruckner and it’s been different to get used to singing in German and Latin.

Performance Lab: I’ve had to play twice so far. The first time I stuffed up a lot: my reed and one of my notes wasn’t working. This week the piece sounded a lot better though. I feel like I don’t know most of my pieces well enough to play in front of the class yet so it’s a bit annoying. For wind sympth, I’ve been made section leader of the 3rd clarinets (around 4/5 of us), which means I get to lead the group and point out difficult parts in our pieces during sectionals/rehearsals. We’ve decided to push back grade 8 until the end of this year.

Education: We’ve had a kahoot almost every week. We have an assessment in around 1 ½ weeks, where we need to reflect on our own literacy/numeracy and I still haven’t started.

Thinking about getting my RSA and RCG to apply for some more jobs soon. My local RSL’s around a 5 minute walk so I’m thinking about applying there. Uni had a really discounted RSA course but I think it sold out.

Week 7

M&S3: I got the marks back for my test and I was pretty happy with it-it was heaps better then what I was getting last year!! We had a transcription due this week which I found hard to do and I got really sick of the recording by the time I handed it in. For aural choir, we’ve been put in groups and have to learn a Bach chorale as part of your assessment. I’m happy with the group I’ve been put in and the song was starting to come together on Friday (except we haven’t started to learn the German words yet!). We have another test in week 9 which I’m going to have to study for as well. The lectures for this are still feeling way too long-last week I started packing up 30min early because I thought we’d almost finished!!

Performance Lab: I have a presentation assessment tomorrow for this. I’m playing the 2nd movement of my concerto (with one of my friends accompanying me on piano) and then have to talk about the historical background/analysis/how the piece fits into my program. It has to go for around 8 minutes. I’ve been playing it with my friend and sometimes she goes a bit too fast so hopefully it comes together well tomorrow. I’ve also got my wind symphony concert on Friday which should be good as I’ve been enjoying our pieces!

Education: Should be getting the marks back for my last assessment this week. My next assessment is 3000 words!! It’s basically a lesson plan and an evaluation of it. Some of the lectures have been pretty boring so far though.

Other stuff:
I got my RSA around 2 weeks ago and I had a trial shift at a restaurant (as a waiter) last night. I was mainly taking food to tables and cleaning/setting up tables. I have to go back on Wednesday to fill in paperwork/do online training and then I’ll get a few shifts.

I’ve also registered for the mid-year conference with the bible society at uni. It’s a 5 day camp in the last week of the holidays and some of my friends from music are going so I hope it’s going to be good.

Week 3

I haven’t updated in ages!! Holidays were pretty good- I didn’t do a lot besides sleeping in. On the last week, I went to the bible societies mid-year conference which was really good (apart from the food). I became closer friends with a couple of people from music which was great and learnt heaps of new information. Was pretty happy with my marks from last term as well!! :)

I don’t like my timetable for this Term-I’m at uni normally 4 days a week. On Mondays I have a 5 ½ hour break in between classes and have a lecture from 6-8. Wednesdays and Thursdays I’m only at uni for 1 ½ hours.
This is my timetable
(https://i.imgur.com/JdQkcjo.png)

M&S4: This is the last theory unit for my course!! Our tutes/lectures & studios are really small and there’s only around 20 of us in each. This course mainly focusses on jazz theory (which I don’t know anything about!!). So far, in our tutes we’ve been going over melodic dictation/sight singing and the pieces for our listening list, studio goes over jazz harmony and the lectures are going over a fugue composition we have due in wk 5. Honestly, am starting to enjoy these classes a lot more than I did last year. :)

Indigenous perspectives: I have friends who did this class last year and told me it was bad, and it is incredibly boring :(. It doesn’t help that the lectures are from 6-8 on a Monday night so I’m really tired by the end of it. This course is a first year education course but has a really high fail rate (which our lecturer and other students have said heaps). The first assessments due the same day as my M&S composition: it’s a 1500-word teacher standpoint about working with Indigenous students. Doesn’t sound too difficult but I’m not motivated to start at all (so far the readings have been so dry).

Performance Lab: We haven’t done too much yet. Our lecturer made a list of people who have to perform in front of class and I’m playing next week, and being assessed in wk 10. Our pieces for wind sympth are harder this term then last, so I’ve had to print them off to practise at home. We had a sectional rehearsal with the clarinets this week to work on some of the harder parts.

Week 9
It’s been a while in between updates. I think I found it a lot easier to update my HSC journal then this one at the moment.

Theres only 1 1/2 weeks left of term which I’m really excited for. I can’t wait for holidays (even though I don’t have anything planned yet), but I still have 6 more assessments!! This week’s especially been really busy-I’ve been at uni for 4 nights and all 5 days. I think I preferred trimesters more last term: it’s been really annoying this term because everybody (my siblings/other unis) was on holidays and we were only halfway through the term.

I’ve found this term to be (probably) the best socially. Because I’ve had heaps of breaks in between classes, I’ve been able to hang out with people in the Webster corridor or at CBS things, or on the train home. I think our music cohort is a lot closer then the education one still (I mainly seat with music friends in education classes). This is really good because I haven’t really been enjoying my units too much compared to last term.

We had to make our timetables on Tuesday for next term. I’ll be at uni 3 days and then on placement Thursday and Fridays. Next term, I’m doing Performance Lab, Music studio teaching (the first pedagogy unit) and placement. I’m really excited for pedagogy because it looks like there will only be around 15 of us and a lot of my friends. It also seems like a fun class. We had to fill in our forms for placement last week and I’m hoping to get a school close to home. I’m going to have to buy some more clothes for it because most of the stuff I wear now is too informal. I'm looking forward to it so I hope it goes well (although I think I'll be really nervous the first few days).

A quick update on each of my units:

Performance Lab: Our studio classes for this has mostly been boring so far. I have a performance assessment next Monday which is a workshop presentation where I need to play a piece and then talk about it. I’m playing one of my HSC pieces (Schumann fantasy piece 2) and one of my friends is playing piano for it. Wind Sympth has our concert on Friday!! Our pieces are harder then last term but they sound cool!

Indigenous Perspectives: I’ve found this one incredibly boring!!! I was really happy with my first assessment mark though. In wk 7, we had a walk-on country excursion at La Perouse instead of tutes, which was a lot more interesting then the lectures. Our next assessment is a 1500 word essay & a 5 minute video which I’m not keen on.

M&S4: I was really happy with my composition mark but I’m a little nervous about some of my other marks that haven’t been released yet. We still have a test in our jazz studio, sight singing test and a music lit test left. I feel like I learn a lot in these theory classes but I’m so happy this is the last one.

Week 1

Feels weird going into a third term, because of semesters last year. I didn’t really get up to much in the holidays, & they seemed to drag on a lot towards the end (especially because I don’t have exams, so they go for a month).

I was really happy with my marks last term! I got my first HD, in my least favourite course (was also very surprised because lots of people have said that Indigenous perspectives has a really high fail rate)!!I also got a credit in my theory course which I was happy with because I found them difficult and it was my last theory course for my degree!!

I also had a job interview and got a job in the holidays!! It’s at a new kids play centre opening up near me in 2 weeks. I’ll probably be doing party hosting and cafe stuff. I need to fill out some online training for that this week.

My units for this term are:

Music Studio Teaching: I’m really excited for this course. It’s the first unit of our pedagogy stream and focusses on private tutoring of our instrument. It’s meant to be a more interactive/practical class. This week we had a small lecture about the course and then had to make and present a 3 minute presentation. Our presentation was trying to convince a class of 10 year olds to take instrument lessons with us. We got our instruments out and played parts of songs, and some people got really into trying to be engaging & present it to kids. It was pretty nerve-racking at first because we didn't know we were going to do it, but pretty fun to watch everyones. Throughout the term, we get to give someone in our class lessons and also receive lessons on an instrument we don’t know how to play well, in front of the class. Mines in wk 5, so I still have a while but I think it’ll be really cool to be able to get feedback from our lecturer/& the class on how we are starting to teach.

Performance Lab: I haven’t been enjoying these studios throughout the year as much as I wanted to. This morning was pretty boring, so I’m hoping it gets better. At the end of this term, we have our performance exam (my only exam for the year!) which goes for 25 minutes. I also have to pay for my grade 8 clarinet exam today which will be around the same time as my uni one. I’m doing some of the same pieces and using the same accompanies for both exams, but I hope they’re not on the same week!! On Friday, we have a masterclass for clarinets so I’m excited to see some of my friends play, and what she says.

Placement: We still don’t know our schools for placement & I thought we’d know weeks ago. It turns out we start placement the first week of school term 4 so we still have around 3 weeks left. On Tuesday we had an orientation morning (for 4 hrs!!) which talked about placement, assessments, child safety, and anaphylaxis training. It got a bit boring at times but was important info. I still need to buy some more ‘formal’ clothes for when placement starts. It’s a pass/fail course and we need to do 15 days placement and 7 blog posts on moodle throughout the term.

Fantastic work on the HD! Awesome. Funny how sometimes you can best perform in your least favourite units haha.

Week 5

It’s only halfway through the term and I feel exhausted and ready for another holiday. A bunch of my friends are finishing uni for the year soon, and I’ve still got a while.

Music Studio Teaching: I’ve been really enjoying this class so far. On Monday I had to give one of my friends who plays flute a mini 15min clarinet lesson. I basically taught him how to se it up, correct embouchure and he played Hot Cross Buns at the end. This week, I’ve also had to observe three of my teachers private piano lessons so I can write an essay on them later on i the term.

Placement: I’ve been given a school a 5min drive (30min walk) from my house for placement! I know a bunch of people that go there so it’d be weird if I was observing their classes. I started placement this week on Thursday/Friday and it was a little bit different to what I was expecting. Initially, I was super nervous the first day and before placement. Because it’s the first observation placement, we can be put in any faculty, so I’m going to be in TAS for the first 2 weeks. On the Thursday I observed: yr 11 Software, yr11 graphics, and then 2 yr 7 woodwork classes and then on the Friday I did: 2 yr 10 woodwork, and a yr 7 woodwork/food tech class. Almost every period I was put with a different teacher so I could see their teaching styles. There periods were 1hr 15min long, which I though was really long compared to my school. The teachers were all really nice and helpful which was really good. I think I’m going to be put on the creative arts faculty in 2 weeks which I’m really excited for.

Performance Lab: We need to book our exams and submit our programs next week. There in the first week of December so I’m also going to need to start practising with my piano accompanist soon. In the last couple of weeks of term, everyone in my class needs to play for around 20minutes in front of he class to prepare ourselves for the exam. We don’t have class next week because we have a reading/practise week.

Week 10

My last class of the term finished today!! I only need to come into uni 3 more times: for the wind sympth concert, part checking and performance exam.

Music studio teaching: This has probably been my favourite subject so far. We got to give 2 mini instrumental lessons (15 minutes) and get feedback on how we were teaching. I also got to have 2 piano lessons and a flute lesson (I got so excited when I made a note!!). For the last two weeks, we’ve been doing group lessons (teaching any practical skill because we don’t have 5 clarinets). One of my friends taught the ‘were all in this together’ dance from High School Musical and our lecturer was really confused about how we all knew the song. I added a few new rules into uno and we played uno as a class. Our class for this subjects pretty close. After our last class this week, about 10 of us (out of 18) went out for lunch and then over to someone’s house (who lives near uni). I’m hoping to start teaching some beginner clarinet students next year.

Performance Lab: The lectures for this class have still been a bit boring-I’m hoping when we have a different lecturer next year it’ll be better. I have my wind sympth concert this Friday and next part checking for that on Tuesday. I have 2 performance exams this year-pretty much in the same week. My 8th grade exam is on the 30th of November and then my uni one is the 2nd of December. I was hoping that they’d be slightly more spread apart. Some of the pieces are the same but there are other things that don’t really cross over. It’s been frustrating because I’ve been wanting to practise a lot more (closer to 1 1/2hr a day) but I’ve been busy with other uni assessments/placement/work.

Placement: This has been different to what I was expecting-I think I may have hyped it up too much. I’ve been in music since the 3rd week of placement and as well as classes have watched choir/string ensemble/rock bands. I still have 5 days left of placement (I finish on the 5th of December) but I’m starting to get really bored of just observing. I would really love if we were able to plan and run a small 15-30min part of a class. I need to leave early on Friday because of the wind sympth concert so I’m hoping their okay with it.

The class times have come out for next term and it looks like I’ll be at uni for 3 days!! Monday is 6 hours straight of classes (2 lectures/2 tutes), Tuesday is just wind sympth in the afternoon and then Wednesday is a 1 1/2 hr lecture.

Congrats!!

Do you usually only have 10 weeks a semester or is this an early finish?

Do you know what type of lesson you'd like to run? I imagine it could be pretty frustrating having ideas and wanting to step in but being unable to :/

I'm glad to hear that music studio teaching has been really good :D

It has such a strong impact having a small, tight-knit cohort. Have you decreased in size much or is this all you started with?

With trimesters now, UNSW has 3 10 week terms. So now we have 30 weeks of class instead of 26 but all the class content is squeezed into 10 week terms.

Haven't got any strong ideas but I've been at placement for 5 weeks/10 days now and it's starting to get annoying not being able to do much. Would prefer to be able to plan/teach something small for years 7-9. It's been a bit disappointing because when I did work experience in year 10, because I knew the teacher I got to run two different classes (kindy and yr 1) and I've done less now in 2nd year uni.

I'm really excited for the other 2 pedagogy classes in this stream next year!!  :D

Our music cohort's really tight-in between classes we also normally hang out in the corridor of the music building and talk/study. A lot of the 1st year courses were bigger (around 80ish) because people also did them as electives or in an arts degree. Pedagogy's part of my stream (you can do creative practise/sonic arts/pedagogy or music inquiry) and there's only 18 people in my year doing it. My performance class only has 2 lecture streams and there's about 20 people in each. I think most 2nd year and above classes are pretty small in music (especially compared to the education courses).I think we have had some music people change degrees/drop but not too many.

That does sound super frustrating, or at the least, boring. Will you get any opportunities to write up some lesson plans and run any classes before placement ends? ;D

No, this placements just meant to be a 15 day observation. I go on 2 more placements in 4th year which I can plan/teach lessons. :)
I've had friends at different schools who are doing different things as well-so what you do on this placement kinda depends on what school you go.

Week 2

It’s only week 2 and I have 2 assignments due tomorrow!!

My timetable for this terms pretty good-I’m only at uni for 2 1/2 days. Mondays are 6 hours straight classes (9-3), Tuesdays for Wind sympth (4-6) and then 1 1/2hr on Wednesday. I’m only starting to get used to the transport times again. I’ve been parking at the station and its really annoying how far away I need to park (even at 7-8:30am)!!
My timetable
(https://i.imgur.com/BSHlDHA.png)

I’m doing 2 education subjects this term and 1 music. Normally, I do the opposite so I’m hoping the education courses will be interesting.

I also started volunteering 2hr a week at a preschool in the holidays (I need to do volunteering for an award I’m doing). I brought my clarinet this week and the kids were so cute!!

Managing the classroom: This course looks the most relevant to practical teaching so far!! It’s been really interesting! We’ll walk into the lecture and they’ll be music videos playing and the lecturer herself is engaging. She is practising what she’s telling us to do which is cool to see! Each tutorial includes a mini micro-teaching activity as well: last week we worked on introducing ourselves to a class. For our assessment, we have to do 2 student wellbeing modules and write some reflections (mainly based off placement): it isn’t too exciting but it’s pretty easy.

Digital Literacies: This is my education elective-we get to choose one and this was the only one running this term. The class is really small for an education course (only just over 20 people) and we have our lectures in a tutorial room. I also don’t know too many people in this class. So far, these lectures aren’t as interesting as my other education course. Our ongoing assessment is an online google site/education blog. For Friday, we need to have the basic setup, About Me page and an opinion piece done.

Performance Lab: This is my last year of performance lab. I have a different lecturer to last year so hopefully it’ll be more interesting. Over the last two weeks we’ve had seminars on collaboration and rehearsal techniques. We have two assessments this term: a solo performance in wk 5 and an ‘arranged marriage’ performance in wk 7. For the arranged marriage he paired us with someone else in our class and we have to perform for around 4-6 minutes. He said he was going to try to do unusual instrument combinations so I was a bit worried at first but I’ve been paired with another girl who plays clarinet so we should be able to find a clarinet duet.

They're music masterclasses for my performance lab course-when the uni gets someone in to talk/perform. Its run 3 times during the term and we have to go to at least 4 in the year.

Thanks!!   :D

With the practical stuff in the Edu classes (like practising how to introduce yourself etc.), what's the sentiment usually like? Is it like a "oh gee, here we go again - how awkward" kinda vibe, or more a "this is awesome, we're learning how to do stuff!" kinda thing?

I think it's a bit of both. Like it's really cool that I will do it at placement next year/its actually useful but it's also kinda've awkward as well. We were meant to be giving each other feedback and it was either "sounds good", or "you've got a good teacher voice". I think because some people are going on the longer placements this year it is taken a bit more seriously but it's still pretty awkward as well.

Week 5

I got 7 emails on my birthday about the corona virus. Unis basically gone online from Monday. I don’t mind too much about classes (even though performance lab’s going to be really weird). I’m a little sad about the social stuff though (wind sympth & my community bands been cancelled for the term, CBS is moving online and I’m not really going to be able to meet up with too many people from uni). I wasn’t too concerned before about the virus but now that everything is closing/moving online it's easier to become more anxious. I can definitely see why we're going online (and I think its good not to be on public transport too much) but I don’t think I’ll enjoy having uni online.

Performance Lab: I was meant to have a performance assessment today but we were emailed last night saying class is cancelled. It’s frustrating because we’re going to have to record ourselves playing and then upload it. I’m probably going to want to get it as close to perfect so I’m going to have to record it like 5 times. I’ve still got the arranged marriage assessment towards the end of the term but I don’t know how much that’ll work when classes aren’t on (part of me doesn’t want to go all the way to uni just to rehearse for an hour). The piece (up to 4:29) we’re doing is really cool though. Pretty sad that wind sympths not on for the rest of the term because it was really fun.

Managing the classroom: This so far has been my favourite education subject so I’m sad it’s going online. Our lecturer sounds so organised though-so far she’s uploaded/recorded the lectures for weeks 6-8.

Digital Literacies: This ones a bit stressful because we have 2 group assessments and we won’t be seeing any of our group members. One assessment is due next week, we’ve hardly started and one person hasn’t been responding to my messages and the other is a presentation (which now must be done during the online lecture).

Week 6

It’s been a hectic week of online classes and lectures!! As of tonight, I have no reason to leave the house (everything either been cancelled or gone online). In some ways it’s been cool because I have been video chatting with friends/and doing online stuff but it's a lot different to in person. CBS has been doing all there stuff (Bible studies/talks) online and were doing an online trivia on Tuesday which I’m keen about! Clarinet lessons are going online, and I’m not looking forward to it at all.

Performance Lab: Ended up getting my performance recorded and uploaded (which was super frustrating because I hate listening to myself recorded!!). I went to my friends house on Wednesday, and today so we could practise and film our arranged marriage assessment. We got it recorded and while its not perfect, it’s the best we can do with the circumstances.

Managing the classroom: I really love my lecturer for this and the subject! She’s really organised and our tute went well this week (even if our micro-teaching was incredibly awkward-we needed to role play communicating with parent complaints). For our assessment we had to analyse 2 videos on classroom management-it wasn’t too bad but it took longer then I was expecting.

Digital Literacies: I had a group assessment for this on Friday which ended up going ok (even of my other group member did some last minute). I have a group presentation tomorrow based off a reading we needed to do. This is what my website  for my final assessment task looks lie so far.

I feel like the online classes work a lot better for education subjects then my music ones. I think one of the things that’s really stressful is not knowing how long this is going to last. If term 2 ends up being online, I’m considering under loading and potentially adding an extra year onto my degree. It’s not ideal but I’m meant to be doing a music pedagogy unit next term, which was my favourite last year and I can’t see going as well online. I was also meant to overload in term 3 which I was nervous about anyway. At this point, I’m kinda just waiting to see what happens though.

Week 11
I finished classes today!! Have 2 assessments to do and then holidays. However, I’m not too keen for these holidays. I feel like they’ll be really boring.

I have an online camp in the holidays (CBS has our mid-year conference) so hopefully it’ll still be interesting and I’ll be able to meet some more people. I’m also teaching my first clarinet student on Thursday! Never expected my first lesson would be through zoom! I’m excited but also a bit nervous that I won’t know what to say, or I’m going to have to try hard to be engaging online.

I handed in my Queens Award folder yesterday! It’s the highest international Girls Brigade award (I’ve been working on it for 4 years). It’s included volunteering/GB/church service, a music major work, initative tasks, references, a speech, and a few events. I still need to do a tiny bit of volunteering, follow up a reference & an award review interview. It should be presented at the end of the year at government hose which is exciting.

I’ve been facebook messaging and regularly video chatting a few of my friends during social isolation. I hate phone calls (it makes me really anxious) but I find video calls a lot better! Had an almost 2hr call with one of my friends last week, which got a little long but was really great to meet up and chat!!

I'm hating social isolation right now! At this point, it’s annoying that I don’t know how long this will go on for. I miss going to uni, band, etc and seeing everybody.

At this point, it looks like term 2 will be online (or at least start online). I’m doing 3 subjects next term: performance lab, special education: inclusive strategies, and becoming a performer (another one of my pedagogy units). I really enjoyed my pedagogy unit last year but I’m not sure how good it will be online. Apparently, this units meant to be the least practical so hopefully it’s still good. My timetables great next term (only 2 1/2 days of class) and I probably won’t be at uni!

Performance Lab: We had part checking due this week (which was a bit weird because we only had ensembles for 4 weeks). I had to upload videos playing excerpts from the piece we were working on, and some extra orchestral excerpts. I really enjoyed this course at the start of the term, but not as much when it went online. Were meant to be doing conducting next term so hopefully that’s fun!

Managing the classroom: This has by far been my favourite education course. It was almost a sad, bittersweet ending today, our lecturers been amazing! Our last assessments due on Friday and it’s taking me ages to do. Its a 2500 word classroom management plan: broken into a philosophy, theory and practise section. We need references for everything, so it’s taking a while.

Digital Lit: Our last assessment is a max 4 minute video on our content for a flipped classroom. I’m doing it on how to answer a HSC music 1 aural analysis question. I’m basing it on year 11 students to prepare them for year 12.  I’ve got my script ready, I just need to film and edit it. I might upload it to the music forums if I’m happy with it. This is what my website looks like so far (I still need to work on it’s presentation a bit though). This course hasn’t been as exciting as my other education course but it’s still been interesting to learn.

Holidays
Not keen for this whole term to be online! I think I was expecting to be going back to uni sooner considering schools are back 5 days a week and some of my classes are small (My music ones are between 17-25 people) but its looking like we won’t be. With the restrictions starting to ease I’m hoping to meet up with some more friends in person soon. I’ve really missed going to uni/band and seeing my friends!

In the holidays I had an online MYC (Mid year conference) which was really fun despite it being a lot different to last year (most of it was on zoom). I got to meet up with a few friends that week (both in person & online!) which was nice!

I’ve really enjoyed teaching clarinet, even though its been though zoom! I love lesson planning & seeing her face when she gets a new note right!! Sometimes the internet cuts out though which is annoying! Were starting high notes this week.

I’m getting 2 baby guinea pigs next week & I’m excited (but I’m really bad at deciding on names for pets!)!

Week 1
Performance Lab: I had online ensemble (combined wind sympth/orchestra) this week and it was really stressful! We’re doing the 2nd mvt of Beethoven's 7th symphony as a combined wind sympth/orchestra as well as orchestral excerpts. We were practising parts of it during the ensemble zoom time & then making recordings of our part each week. There were a couple of times where he tried to get us all to play and it definitely didn’t work but it was stressful that I might have been called on to play by myself in front of the group! It took me about 1 1/2 hours to record a 20 second part yesterday and I’m not keen to have to record every week (I hate listening to recordings of myself). It was so different to normal wind sympth rehearsals and I would’ve preferred not to do ensembles this term if it was all online! Our studios this term are learning how to conduct (and with a guest lecturer). This week was the basics which was still interesting to learn. Only half of us had our cameras on which was a bit awkward (but I preferred being able to see how other people were conducting).

Becoming a performer: This is my 2nd pedagogy course. I loved this course so much last year so I’m hoping it’ll still be good online (this terms not meant to be as practical). In week 3, I have to do a 10 minute presentation & discussion on an article about clarinet pedagogy.

Special education: The lecturer for this course seems interesting! This week we only had an hour lecture and then 2 online modules to complete (disability awareness and evidence-based practises). I woke up 10 minutes before the lecture started so I was half asleep at the start (its weird not having the travel time)!

Week 5

It’s weird to think that I’m already halfway through the term (and also my entire degree)!! Next weeks a reading week/mid-term break so I don’t have any class! I’m organising to meet up with some of my friends (most I haven’t seen since March).  ;D

The hype and excitement of video calls has definitely worn off by now. I have some friends who enjoy doing it but I’d prefer to be able to meet up in person more.

I’m also thinking about wanting to be qualified to teach history as well as music. I really like studying my bachelor of music/education and I don’t want to change it but maybe studying some history afterwards? It’s something I think I might look into more and ask when uni goes back in person. I’m not against staying at uni for a little longer but I don’t know how easy it is to add on another teaching specialisation.

I got two baby guinea pigs a few weeks ago and there really cute. it took a little while to name them but there called cookies & cream.
My guinea pigs
They're both girls. The one with the white nose is cookies and the one with the brown nose is cream.  :D
(https://i.imgur.com/ipIL3il.jpg)

Performance Lab: Conducting classes have been interesting! We’ve mainly been going through the basics so far. Almost 3/4 of the class normally have our cameras on so it’s not as awkward anymore! We were meant to do a conducting test through moodle this week but it didn’t really work (only 2 questions came up for a 45 minute test). Online ensemble isn’t as stressful now. We’ve almost finished recording the first piece (and then were moving to the Magic Flute overture) and are working through orchestral excerpts. It’s still a lot different to normal rehearsals though!

Becoming a performer: So far, I’ve had to do 2 presentations for this course. Its almost easier doing presentations online because I can read off a script and no-one will know! They have both been on articles about teaching musical expression. My teacher was really irritated with the author of my first article so she had heaps to say about it!! Afterwards, we have to write critiques on the articles main claims, theoretical/empirical support and persuasiveness. It was kinda similar to history extension: we had to evaluate the article based on reliability, validity and objectiveness. I’m really happy about my first mark and still need to work on my 2nd critique.

Special education: My 3000 word assignment for this was due today and took ages to write (and get to the minimum word count)! It was based on evidence-based practises. I chose social skills and looked at social narratives video modelling, self-management and peer-mediated instruction. We’ve had guest lecturers for the past few weeks: one on intellectual disabilities, a speech pathologist and a principal on mental health. I’ve had some very awkward breakout groups in my tutes!

Holidays!
I finished uni and also got 1000 posts on the forums last week which was pretty cool!  :D

But, I’m already starting to get a bit frustrated with Covid and bored of the holidays. Where I live is considered a covid hotspot. Some of my friends aren't keen to meet up and there’s not really many places to go. I tried to meet up with a friend last week and it fell through twice (neither of our faults, but still annoying).

Next term I’m studying three music units. It’ll be the first term without doing an education unit! I’m doing Performance Lab (my last ever performance unit), World Music and Educating the Musical Novice (my last pedagogy unit). At this point, I’ll be doing my performance classes in person (studio and wind sympth). So, I’ll have a 9-6 day on Tuesdays with two in person classes and an online lecture (getting up early again for the train will be so hard!!). I’m really hoping that wind sympth/my studio will be in person because I haven’t played in a band/seen people in my course for ages (and this is our last performance unit!). While it was cool to see people in our ‘online wind sympth/orchestra’ and play some music, you can’t play together on zoom and it was very different to what it normally is. Theres a lot of caution right now with wind instruments, air particles and covid though so I wouldn’t be surprised if its not on in person. Theres a suggestion that wind players may need to prerecord our performances and discuss them in the in-person class which honestly isn’t ideal. There still not 100% sure what will happen  with our performance exams: if they will need to be recorded or online. Overall, I’m pretty happy with my timetable for next term-I have three days of classes and on Thursdays I finish at 11am (although I do have three 9ams!!)!

I think I do want to be qualified to teach both history and music. I want to send some emails to some different unis over the holidays to see how easy it is. I’m not sure if I’d need to study both history and history teaching related units or how long it’d take.

I’m also hoping to move out of home sometime next year. I have no solid plans yet (and haven’t had a shift at my job since March) but I want to move closer to uni and have a bit more independence.

I keep checking if my marks are out yet and I really want to know how I went (especially for my major assignments: my pedagogy essay and my inclusive education booklet) but I only handed them in just over a week ago!

Hey,
Will do a longer update later but I'm doing a group research assessment on music education in schools for my World Music course. I would really appreciate if anyone who has studied music in NSW (years 7-12) could fill out our google form!!

Thanks so much!!  ;D

5/11/12
Week 8

It’s already week 8 which seems weird because this terms gone pretty fast (and also slow at the same time)! I’m excited for this term to be over soon even though I have no plans for the holidays.

I’ve had 2 classes online and 1 in person this term. I was really excited about the in person class but most of the time its been pretty underwhelming/disappointing! My performance lab studio isn’t compulsory to attend in person so some people watch through zoom. Because it’s a 9am class we’ve had a week with 5 people out of 15 in the actual room (so it felt like I’d wasted time travelling into uni). The lecturer doesn’t know how to use zoom well so he picks on everyone in the room to answer questions while those in zoom get out of it. I also don’t have any of my closer friends in this tute so I still haven’t seen some people in ages! My other in person class is tango ensemble (wind sympth isn’t running this term) and for the first half of the term only one wind player was able to play at a time. So, I only came into class every two weeks and could only play for around 20 minutes. Thats changed now so we can all play!

Uni’s been very quiet this term! Nobody really stays in between classes and the music corridor, which is normally really busy, always has no-one.

I have a job interview on Monday for a swimming instructor position at my local pools. It’s only a contract until the end of December but it has paid training and sounds pretty cool so I hope it goes well!

Performance Lab: This is my in person class-we’ve had between 5-10ish/15 people show up each week. We had the option this year to either record or do a live performance exam. I’ve chosen to record my pieces because I can do it as many times and I won’t get as anxious. I’ve just started getting lessons with my piano accompanist and I need to record a piece for an assessment on Monday. My community band started back up 3 weeks ago which has been so exciting because I hadn’t played with people since March! We’ve just got a new conductor so were starting to get used to him and the new music. I’ve also started piano lessons a few months ago. It’s difficult because I’ve listened to a lot of great pianists at uni before and I’m nowhere near that level but it’s been interesting to learn so far!

World Music: This class sounded interesting but it’s probably been my least favourite so far. Our lectures are powerpoints with voiceovers and YouTube links which are incredibly dry and difficult to get through each week! I would prefer if we had live class through zoom or blackboard instead of something pre-recorded. The tutorials go for 2 hours and are difficult to get through as well: they normally just going through questions from the lectures (often in breakout groups). We have a group assessment for this and luckily we were able to pick our groups so I’m with some of my friends. It’s an online ethnographic project so we are researching music education in NSW high schools and how funding/covid/the syllabus has affected it, which is why I posted a survey before. We have a presentation and 2000 word research report due at the end of the term. We also have another listening test which was meant to be next week but got pushed back to wk 10 which is great because I don’t know anything about the pieces yet!

Educating the musical novice: This is my last pedagogy unit and I’ve enjoyed these ones so much! This has mostly been focussed on beginner tutor books and teaching young children. Our first assessment was critiquing different tutor books for our instrument. Then I had to create a beginning clarinet tutor book for the first 3 weeks with an intro,  (clarinet care, posture, embrouchere, tonguing descriptions) and three pages of clarinet exercises. I have an essay due towards the end of the term on teaching young students.

I might properly reflect on last term later but ...

I started placement on Friday!! I'm going to be at a school for the rest of the school term (so 4 weeks). I'm at a Christian school around 20 minutes away from me so pretty close! I was also at this school for year 10 work experience because I know the primary music teacher but this time will be with high school!

I'm mainly teaching years 7 and 8 but have one year 9 class a fortnight. I'm teaching from Wednesday and teach 1/3rd of a teachers load. So, I'll be teaching around 7/8 periods a week, observing another 7 periods and helping with band/orchestra/choir rehearsals!

I was really nervous about placement last week but it was pretty good and everyone seems really nice! It's still a bit stressful to actually start lesson planning and teach! I had some time on Friday to plan and I couldn't really decide what to do! Also, double periods seem like a really long time to teach (100 minutes)! I'm worried I'm going to be really tired over the next few weeks but hopefully it will be really good to start teaching!   :D

I have my last ever education class this week! It still doesn't really feel like I'm towards the end of my degree!
