My school studied four short stories within the book 'Island' by Alistair MacLeod for the creative piece and I chose to rewrite one of the short stories from the perspective of a different character.

Speaking from my experience, if you're thinking of rewriting a scene within the book, you'd need to provide a new aspect to the story or something unexplored before to score a high mark. For example, all of the short stories we covered were written from the male's perspective. As such, I chose to write from the females, in order to provide a different outlook into how women were treated and the stereotyping associated with them. Teachers aren't necessarily looking for you to rewrite the story, but rather explore concepts of the text to a more complex degree. Since we're from different schools, there might be different expectations of how they want the creative piece done, make sure to check!!

I hope this helped :'))! I received a 'Very High' for my creative, but again, this might differ for different teachers and schools. Make sure to ask your teacher to verify what they want.

What First Aid said is key - even if you're writing from a different character's point of view, simply retelling the story won't be enough to earn you a high mark. What I mean by that is that you need to introduce new insights and opinions about the text. Just like you might challenge the prompt and bring about your own interpretation of the text in a text response, you should aim to do the same in a creative. It should be idea-driven as much as it is narrative-driven.

Hope that helps, good luck with your writing!
