    Hey everyone!

Are you a Uni student looking for a volunteer opportunity? Come join the Student Welfare Outreach Team (SWOT) in 2019 as a volunteer VCE tutor!

Falling under the Melbourne University Health Initiative, SWOT is an entirely student-run, not-for-profit outreach program which aims to address educational inequity by providing support to students from secondary schools that are underrepresented at Victorian universities. One’s socioeconomic circumstances (such as location or income) are known to be some of the most influential factors on their academic success, more so than their individual ability or work ethic. Therefore, any additional support provided to these students is extremely valuable. SWOT has been running for over 20 years, and has since provided academic support and mentoring to thousands of VCE students.

In 2019, SWOT will be offering the following VCE units 3/4 subjects: Biology, Chemistry, English, Mathematics (Further, Methods, Specialist), Physics, and Psychology. These will be offered across all three of our subprograms:

SWOT Week is SWOT’s flagship program. During the July and September school holidays (coinciding with university breaks), each subject will have a dedicated revision day where students come into The University of Melbourne Parkville campus for a day of uni-style lectures, workshops, and tutorials. Students will also have the opportunity to participate in study skills and health and wellbeing workshops.

SWOT Masterclasses: Tutors will travel to secondary schools in the Melbourne metro area to give one after-school revision session each term. Masterclasses give tutors the opportunity to work closely with students and provide them with academic support and mentoring to help them achieve their best.

SWOT Virtual: This program extends the reach of SWOT, connecting tutors to students in regional Victoria for one-on-one weekly online tutoring sessions. Through these regular sessions, tutors have the opportunity to develop a long-term relationship with students and act as mentors for them throughout their VCE. Tutoring is conducted completely online, and is therefore the most flexible of the three programs, as tutors can organise their lesson times with the student. Tutors will also be supported with subject materials from the other programs.

Applications are currently open to all university students (including those who have just started!). While the program is primarily based at The University of Melbourne (Parkville), applicants from all Victorian universities are welcome and encouraged (I’m from Monash myself! :P). This is a great opportunity to develop your communication and teamwork skills, and you’ll also be able to meet like-minded individuals and support students through their stressful VCE!

Just thought I'd let everyone know that SWOT will be having a stall during undergraduate Orientation Week this week!

When: Clubs & Societies Days - Wed 27 Feb & Thurs 28 Feb, from 11am-3pm

What: Come down to chat to one of our awesome team members about the program (look out for someone wearing the SWOT Logo), or even just to say hi! ;D

Where: Professor's Walk (bordering South Lawn), somewhere around the Baillieu and Brownless Biomedical Libraries. We'll be sharing a stall with MUHI - look out for their logo!

We're still taking applications for volunteer tutors! Apply here: http://bit.ly/NEWSWOT

    Hey everyone!

We are currently recruiting new tutors for the upcoming Masterclasses and mid-year SWOT Week for the following subjects (VCE Units 3/4):

Mid-year SWOT Week is held after Semester 1 uni exams have finished (during the holidays - July 1 to 4), and so is particularly suitable for those who may have concerns about having clashing commitments with their university studies. All Victorian university students welcome! More information can be found in the main post above.

Feel free to post below or PM me with any questions :)
