Posting rules

These are rules applying specifically to posting.

Language

  • All material posted must be acceptable. If the content you post possibly wouldn't be appropriate for your parents or grandparents, don't post it. Examples of such material includes (but isn't limited to): pornography; gore imagery; hate speech; negative comments.
  • No excessive swearing. We understand as teenagers and adults swearing is somewhat a part of our culture and at times, cannot be avoided. Please keep it to a minimum (as we're an educational forum, consisting of highly intelligent individuals).
  • Put-downs, bullying or defamatory remarks will not be tolerated under any circumstances. All members of the forum are expected to conduct themselves in an appropriate and civilised way.
  • Please avoid using any misc language such as "beta" or "do you even lift". We are an educational forum, not a group of steroid-injecting bogans who can't string two words together.

Posting

  • Do not delete helpful posts that have been answered. ATAR Notes is a community for helping each other and as a forum, we keep archived copies of your responses for other people to reference later down the track. Selfish acts such as deleting your post/thread without an appropriate reason will be restored.
  • Do not spam. There are many interpretations for spam, but the most common are: posting two or more times in a row without justification; posting the same content in multiple threads; and repeated bumping.
  • Do not revive (grave-dig) old threads unless there is justification to do so. Each thread that has been inactive for at least 30 days will say so in the reply section in red (giving you a warning that it's an old thread).
  • Avoid making off-topic posts. Posts such as this will be removed without notice. Repeated off-topic posting will be met with a warning (or ban).
  • Avoid chatting to users in a thread. Please use the IRC or the private messaging system to converse with others.
  • Avoid chatting in all capital letters (signifies shouting), unless using an acronym (e.g. VCE, ATAR, VTAC)
  • Avoid vague titles (such as 'Chemistry', 'help question' etc). Make it clear what your question/thread/post is about.
  • Avoid being desperate in your post - post titles that sound 'desperate' may be changed (at moderator discretion). Desperate titles may be (but again, aren't limited to): 'Read this', 'Urgent help', or something like that.
  • Please attempt to post in the correct section and thread. Please look around before you post or make a new thread (to ensure it in the correct section). Please see towards the end for more information.

Advertising

  • Advertisements of education services are allowed, however they must be conducted in an honest manner. Any attempts to deceive members will be dealt with seriously. Please use the VCE (and related) Businesses forum (or appropriate sub-forum) to make your post.
  • At the bare minimum, individual tutors should include the following: location; hourly rate; subject study scores or university results that can back up their ability to tutor in said field(s)
  • At the bare minimum, businesses or entities should include the following: company name; website; ABN (if you have one); service(s) offered; location(s) of such service(s); hourly rate or charge.
  • Advertisements that have no substance (e.g. give very vague details) will be removed without notice.
  • Advertisements that are spammed (e.g. posted more than once in an unreasonable time frame) will be removed without notice.
  • Advertisements aimed to remove or disengage members of ATARNotes will be removed without notice.

Legal

  • Discussion of illegal activities of any sort is not permitted on ATAR Notes. Offending posts will be deleted on sight.
  • Uploading copyright material of any kind is a bannable offence. If you upload questionable content, it must be publically available via the internet OR you must have the permission of the copyright holder/owner of the content.

Trolling

  • Definition: Actions which deliberately aim to mislead/antagonize/upset someone, or elicit a severely negative response. What constitutes as trolling is not limited by the definition, and is open to interpretation by moderators.
  • AN does not tolerate trolling. The severity of the offense is open to interpretation by moderators.

Miscellaneous
Please post in the correct section - this means that you will need to take some time to check where you're posting.

For each state, you will notice there are dedicated subject child boards (e.g. English, Mathematics, Chemistry) and your questions should be posted there (if it's related to only one subject). Most of these boards will have a Question Thread where you should post your questions in the first instance. Do not unnecessarily create a thread for one question.

Moderators will move threads that are in the incorrect section.

Consequences

In all instances, moderators will have discretion in what type of punishment they issue to users. We are fair in our punishments, but we will not tolerate serious matters such as copyright infringement, consistent spamming/trolling or illegal activities.

Most cases will result in a warning (accompanied by a private message) to indicate the warning reason and any warning increment (as a percentage). All warnings are logged and can be used as part of any further decisions made by the moderators.

If we find that a user continues to ignore warnings issued by moderators (and repeats the behaviour), we may upgrade the consequence to a post ban or account ban (again, discretion is used).

As a final resort (and for those that are so severe that a warning just isn't justified), a permanent account ban will be issued.

NOTE: The following process above is a GUIDE, where moderators can use discretion in issuing any sort of warning/ban they deem necessary. To avoid being scrutinized, just be civil and take these into account :)

Moderator edit: Cleaned up and clarified a few areas.

Uploading of copyright material is a bannable offense. Discretion will be used, but we will have a low tolerance to malicious abuse of commercial copyright. ATARNotes cannot afford a lawsuit arising from users posting practice exams and other resources. Please be mindful of this.

Just a reminder to all users that although this isn't explicitly mentioned, joking about thoughts and actions such as depression, suicide or any other illness (whether mental or physical) is just not one in ATARNotes. Thanks, ATARNotes is a safe community, let's keep it that way.

If you need to talk to someone, feel free to PM me (among others on the forum) and to utilise the appropriate helplines and your GP. It's a serious issue, not one to be joked about.

Okay recently we've had a couple of instances of people creating accounts purely to defame or abuse others. What people don't realize is that we actually have quite a bit of information as to where/and who makes these accounts, and if what you are doing would warrant real life consequences if posted anywhere else on the internet, we will not hesitate to forward any information to schools/workplaces/or authorities.

99.99% of you have absolutely nothing to worry about and we love the general userbase of AN, and we're usually even pretty happy to accept friendly banter and jokes, but under no circumstances are we going to let people defame or bully others on this forum.

cheeeerz :)

Please note new rule under Language, because I'm sick of this crap:

  • Please avoid using "misc" language like "beta" or "do you even lift". We are an educational forum, not a group of steroid-injecting bogans who can't string 2 words together.

In addition, please do not ask for commercial exams or exam answers on the forum, this is a final warning to all and I have no problems banning people for a few days this close to exam period.

Cheers.
