Say you were in this position. What would you do?

Is "bank it" too bland an answer? 😂

If I suddenly won $50 million, the first thing I would do is wake up

Clever. I see what you did there.

It would be so fundamentally life-changing, though. I wonder how many people who win that sort of money don't completely blow it.

Nah I dunno, I'd probably put some of it into a bank/super and buy a house but I'd just rent it out or something because I don't really want to stay in one place atm. Probably give my siblings some money if I'm feeling nice. I don't know what I'd do with the rest. Probably give it away or start a charity fund or something (or at least I'd like to think so). I don't think I would ever be able to use that much money, and I actually like working so I probably wouldn't quit my job.

I'd give it away. There's no way I would trust myself with that amount of money, I'd throw it all away on useless things, so why not do some good with it, a lá Bill Gates. I don't see the good of becoming rich without working for it since you don't understand the value of money until you've worked for it, and I don't buy lottery tickets for this very reason.

I'd probably pay for my family to go travelling around the world. Then buy my parents one of those big houses near the beach. Then buy myself a big house and a car, then give lots to charity.

First things first I am not telling a soul. I will open a new bank account with a bank I dont currently bank with and make sure the info is super secure from the start with no internet banking just in person with some crazy level of security. then I am putting 49.5 million in a 6 month term deposit and leaving 500k out for now to have for things.
(still not telling anyone, plan to never tell anyone)
I will continue with my job but pay off all my debts and think for 6 months about what I am going to do with the money. I'll pretend I won like 40k at the casino and buy some new appliances for the house and a gift for my parents. fix my car etc.

Then after the 6 months is up lets say I know what I want to do in my life. 25 million of the remaining 49.5 is going in some super stable investments. basically just gonna buy houses and lease them out to the government on 9 year leases and some other stuff. Ill put 10 of the remaining 24.5 into more active investments. the remaining 14.5 I will quit my job and pretend to have started an internet start up that I'm not telling anyone about to explain my money and I will buy my family a new house somewhere good. Then I will go do whatever I want to in life which is probs start a charity or something. I'll also probs start a few grants and some research scholarships to study photovaltic energy and the economics of it all so we can get solar power going.

I would start small charity at first and learn how running a not for profit works and how to run it best and manouvre through local barriers to charitable works etc. I will slowly increase my spend with my efficiency. within a couple of years I could make it run pretty well and put some money to good uses by watching over it and making sure there is no waste of resources going on. Who knows it might even get donations from ppl. then once I have built schools and health facilities for all the aboriginial people and the charity has a sustainable spend/donation rate I will go to LA and just be a boring rich guy who drives a lambo and tries to get into fancy red carpet events. Once I have made friends with the celebrities i will get them to promote my charity even more to help rack up donations to fund infrastructure projects in the outback as well as improve welfare for the indigenous population as well as rural areas in general.

Now that my charity doesnt need any more of my money (thanks to the promotion from my famous friends) I can use the wealth I have accumulated in the mean time ($$$) to build a big fuck off solar energy generator in the middle of the fucking dessert and use it to power Perth. At this point the tradies from the mines will have lost their jobs as the resources are getting scarce and I will employ them to build this shit. I will and also offer apprenticeships to disadvantaged people and those with learning disabilities. Thanks to the scholarship I set up 6 months after winning the lotto, I have scientists and finance ppl who know the perfect way to build a solar energy plant in the dessert near Perth, and how to make it economical. The state government at this point is probably desperate for economic stimulus as there will be thousands of trained tradesmen from the mines who no longer have jobs. This will be a great revitalisation for the economy and a push towards clean energy with help from government money and funding etc. along with my own money. I will now change the scholarship to a broader renewable energy one and begin work.

Once the power plant is built and I have revitalised the Perth economy and employed a bunch of people, then other states will see what I have done and be willing to go halvsies with me to do the same. Next I build the big solar energy plants in the northern territory to power darwin and south australia to power adelaide. at this point I am making bank on the generator in Perth, but more importantly I am helping with unemployment etc. in these states and cities which have seen an economic slump during the resources down turn of the 2020's.  By this point thanks to my scholarships and the general advancement of technology I can now build an initial hydro powerplant in Queensland and hire farmers and tradies who have dug mt isa dry of resources and have seen their crop productivity fall with global warming and pollution. this hydro plant will be clean and I will use the political clout I have obtained by waving this big fat economic carrot in the face of the QLD government that I can now stop cunts from polluting the great barrier reef !!! I will call up my actor friends to help mobilise the qld masses and replace the dirty refineries with my clean hydro power plants which I have had scholars researching how to build for years. At this point I am an energy mogul. perth adelaide and darwin are super green cities and Brisbane Cairns and the Gold coast are about to become so as well. I have brought NBN to all the rural areas of Australia and we are just killing it.

I haven't planned what Im gonna do after that but you get the jist of it.

I would get a heckin' mountain of smashed avo, that's for sure.

Okay but honestly
I would bank most of it. immediately send at least 10 mill to charities anonymously, and not tell anyone. I would pay off my parent's house debt and buy my own little apartment somewhere. And THEN I wouldn't get HECS/HELP debt, yeh boi

To be honest I would not find it hard to save it - I'm sort of a money squirrel, so thrifty is the name of the game. I would keep going in life as per normal - get a job somewhere, maybe go hiking more often and get myself a pretty Indian Scout and maybe a good car but I would keep the money banked and spend the interest (by which a person can still live with, like, 200,000/annually). Write a will giving some to cancer research, some to family, some to World Vision, some to other causes. All in all, I wouldn't end up really using it for much during my life, but I'd live pretty affluently off of the interest dregs. Is it weird for someone my age to plan for things after death?
