Title: I Got An Offer... Now What?
Post by: Gloamglozer on January 09, 2013, 11:12:42 am
So, you've received your ATAR and the next step of your life and arguably one of the most important, is the course you are going to embark on for the next few years of your life.  So in one of my posts in How Do Tertiary Offers Work, I briefly explained what you needed to do after VTAC informs you that you have received an offer.  I felt that it wasn't really informational so I've decided to make a new thread for this.

Firstly, the following list is what you needed to do at The University of Melbourne in 2010 (yes, a whole three years ago from when this post was made).  That means it will not only vary between tertiary institutions but also at UoM since it has been so long.  The point of this post is to give you curious and enthusiastic minds into what you need to do to enrol.

I have to stress that all tertiary institutions are wary of potential students that may be overseas or interstate at the time of enrolment.  So these days, most of the enrolment, including accepting the offer is done online.  So if you have an Internet connection in any place in the world, you can complete enrolment.  This is of course, there is someone back at home who has access to the enrolment package.

1.  Type the URL, which is given to you in the enrolment package that your institution will send you, into your browser.
2.  If you are a domestic student, then the first step will be to either accept your offer or defer it.
3.  Then you setup your email and student portal account.
4.  Then you need to confirm a few personal details including citizenship, contact details, emergency contact and also, Tax File Number.

If you don't have a Tax File Number, then now would be a good time to apply for a TFN.

The TFN is used for HECS-HELP.  Even if you don't plan to use HECS-HELP, it would still be a good idea to obtain one just in case you change your mind.  It just eliminates the hassle and stress of obtaining one at the last minute.

6.  Then you select your subjects for first year.  Don't worry, you change change them later.
7.  Then you plan for Academic Advice Day (AAD).  Other institutions might have a different name for this but this is the day where you mostly meet up with other first years, make an appointment to see a Student Advisor, course and subject information sessions are on and also the first of many chances to join clubs and societies.

If you choose not accept, then all you need to do is...  nothing.  Just let it lapse and that's all.

But as a I mentioned before, it's best to accept anything you are given.

They will send you all you need to know. If I recall properly this involves both an email and letter from the University with the URL to visit.

Yeah, that's right.  Enrolment and everything is done on the respective institution's website.  VTAC just acts as an intermediary.

I think there is a way to do it online but I can't find it. Worst case you have to head to your nearest centerlink to get one.

I have a Tax File Number, but I can't find it.
Does it matter if I don't have it for tomorrows offers? Can I put in my HECS-HELP thing later?

How do I get it back :/?
Sorry for the dumb questions

Just apply for it again through the Tax Office.  It's free.  And yeah, you can put it in later.  Just make sure you put it in before the census date.

I just went into my local ATO office and they gave me a print out with my TFN on it. Just needed to tell them my name, address and show them some ID.

It seems you might be able to do it over the phone too: http://www.ato.gov.au/individuals/content.aspx?doc=/content/41612.htm&page=3&H3

Yep, I got it too, but for Biomed. Apparently we have to wait for the email with contains the ID number which we'll need to enrol online.  ;D

I'm 15, and my 16th birthday isn't until April 10, which is after the census date, but I need HECS-HELP. Is it possible to obtain a TFN even at my age? :S

Yeah you can

How old do you have to be to apply?
You can apply for a TFN at any age; however, if you are:
- 12 years old or younger, your parent or guardian must sign on your behalf
- between 13 and 15 years old, either you or your parent/guardian can sign the form
- 16 years old or older, you must sign the form yourself.

Thanks! :)

If we meet the prerequisites for multiple courses we've applied to, do we get multiple offers or just the one that's highest on our list? And if so, if we don't accept the first offer will another one come through that's next on our preference list?

You get multiple offers if it hasn't changed..

No, you only get a single offer from VTAC on behalf of the university who accepted you into the course that is highest on your preference list. You won't get more than 1 offer from VTAC per round. If you don't get your 1st preference, it goes to your 2nd, and so on up until your last. That's why it's important to order your preferences based on what you want to do the most, not based on their ATAR cut-offs.

If you reject your offer from vtac, you /might/ qualify for a 2nd round offer into your course, but there are no guarantees of this.

As in, do you have to be in the country to receive your offer and enrol? Nah - unis let you enrol online these days. I received my offer, accepted, etc. whilst overseas at the start of this year :) It's pretty straightforward, as long as you have access to the internet, you'll be able to access your emails and follow the instructions to accept your offer.

There is one final (and small) opportunity to change your preferences (before first round offers) on January 4, 2018 from 10am to 4pm. Check out the dates here: http://www.vtac.edu.au/dates.html

It's the same as any other change of preference period, so I would assume so! I also remember adding a course last year onto my preferences during this time as well :)

Census date is the last day that you can unenrol in units without incurring a financial penalty.
Check with the uni you're going to see their census date :)

Not sure if there's a specific date for each institution, but VTAC gives a rough indication of when each releases scholarship offers at this link. :)

Hi just needing some insight and guidance. I was successful in my first round offer I delighted that I received my first round preference Monash Commerce/Science double.  I accepted off course and enrolled and completed by unit selection.  Last round of offers I forgot to change my preferences so left as is, but in this last round I put Melb Uni Commerce in first preference as I had nothing to lose, (I got below the lowest selection rank so didn't think I would get in).  Whilst Commerce / Science double was my first preference, I was surprised to get an offer today from UoM Commerce.  Now I'm in a lul.  Off course most of my friends are going to UoM and many are doing Commerce, the distance isn't an issue as have access to Melbourne Uni tram, I kind of wanted to keep my studies broad by doing a double at Monash, as I'm keen on the Science stream as well. I also have access to Monash transport as I'm near the the monash campus shuttle.  I still am leaning towards Monash Commerce/Science, I know the Commerce degrees would be fairly similar I guess, but would love to hear from members on their thoughts and/or experience before making final decision this week.
