Title: Your five favourite music artists
Post by: Joseph41 on March 28, 2017, 05:32:47 pm
Because I'm interested!

I'll start us off:

1 || THE AVETT BROTHERS
So I discovered The Avett Brothers when I was 14 or 15 or something (2008/9), and have since listened to practically nothing else. Like, every single song is just amazing, and the lyrics are absurdly good. They've changed their sound slightly since I first started listening but no matter what they produce, it's incredible. 10/10 would recommend - practically ever major life event (and a lot of minor events) in my mind has an associated Avett Brothers song.

2 || YUSUF ISLAM/CAT STEVENS
Particularly the album Tea for the Tillerman.

3 || JOSH ROUSE

4 || ANGUS & JULIA STONE

5 || JOSH PYKE

And then a bunch of others, like Radiohead, The Smiths and Orla Gartland. Your turn - recommend me some music! ;D

EDIT: Somehow forgot about Jack Johnson! Eep!

OOOOOOO I have some good ones!

1- Aly Michalka
Particularly the song "Someone to Fall Back on" (from the movie Bandslam)

2- Fleetwood Mac
To me, there's nothing like a good sing to any of the songs from the Rumours album ;D

3- ABBA
So many memories. Sadly I'm only the dancing queen for 15 more days

4- Coldplay.
Enough said.

5- The Rembrandts.
Friends (the tv show) wouldn't be bearable without them. ;D

(I would've put Avett Bros in there but J41 nails it ;) )

By the time I've finished, every single person on this forum will appreciate the Avetts. ;D

I'll definitely be checking out your suggestions when I get home!

I'm gonna do purely Aussie artists just cos I reckon they need some love  :P

Cub Sport - Synth-pop band from Brisbane. Got amazing harmonies and they're also super cool dudes – seen them live about 6 times at this point lol. Fun fact - they used to be called Cub Scouts until Scouts Australia threatened to sue. 'Come On Mess Me Up' is a solid starting point.

Saskwatch - Funk band from Melbourne. Solid horns section and insane vocals. Check out 'Keep Me in Mind', 'Give Me a Reason' or 'Second Best'.

Tiny Little Houses - Another Melbourne band, little bit of a lo-fi sadboy grunge kinda vibe. They also post some dank memes on their Facebook page. Give 'Snow Globe' or 'You tore out my heart' a go.

Julia Jacklin - Kinda folk-y singer from Blue Mountains, NSW. Her lyrics are stunning and her voice is just as good. She's a relatively new artist (made her first release last year) but she's a fantastic songwriter and her music really stays with you. Check out 'Pool Party', or try 'Don't Let the Kids Win' if you feel like having a bit of a cry. 'Motherland' is another favourite.

Ball Park Music - Band from Brisbane, would probably describe them as indie-rock/pop I guess? They specialise in wrapping nihilistic lyrics in happy-sounding music. I've seen them 8 times live now and would still happily see them again – they're v v good. 'She Only Loves Me When I'm There' is a great place to start, otherwise 'Whipping Boy' is a good one off their latest album.

There are a few others I wanna mention like Haitus Kaiyote and Megan Washington but I'll leave it at 5 cos otherwise I'll be here all day :P

1. Melanie Martinez
2. That Poppy (you may recognise her as that really creepy youtuber but her music is actually dope, and includes a subtle critique of capitalism so what's not to love  ;))
3. Imagine Dragons (First concert, so they'll always have a soft spot)
4. The Beatles
5. Sia

Good idea! I'll attach an example too and a small description (I don't know how many people will know them) :D I'll be sure to give some of these artists a listen!

1. Blind Guardian German power metal band. Typically sing about fantasy -- folk tales, Tolkien, GRRM, 'Wheel of Time' series, 'The Dark Tower', Peter Pan, blahblahblah, whatever you can think of. They do everything from really fast-paced songs to slower ballads.

2. Opeth Prog metal band. Their songs (like the one I linked) typically progress from melodic, deep sounds to intense growling. Lyrics sometimes give off a pretentious vibe, but I love the sound. They do a lot of concept albums.

3. Ensiferum Folk metal, wooo. Lyrics are about typical Viking stuff -- don't expect much variety. Their songs are great for getting pumped up though.

4. Ne Obliviscaris Prog band from Melbourne. I was listening to them for yeeaarrs, when they were mainly doing pub shows, but one I turned 18, they got big and did a world tour, so I missed out. Damn! More growling than clean singing. Their violinist really makes the band! Just listen to the 2 minute intro I linked, and you'll fall in love!

5. Wintersun Uhh, don't really know what sub-genre they'd fit into -- does epic count? It gives off an epic vibe. Don't really know how to describe these guys other than intense.

Special shout out to Eluveitie for not only playing the best show I've been to yet, but for Anna (female singer/hurdy-gurdier being the most approachable musician I've ever met!

1. Coldplay
Their music makes me feel as though I am on cloud nine (the instrumentals are beautiful as well as Chris Martin's voice). Para-para paradise  :D
2. Imagine Dragons
The down-to-earth nature of their music as well. The guys seem really nice and genuine as well.
3.Adele
Her voice and unique personality (and Britishness)
4. Birdy
Her crisp and delicate voice. I love her version of A-team.
5. Eminem
His empowering, honest (love the way you lie) and motivating songs. If I'm in a shitty mood, I'll listen to him.

Also a very worthy mention- The Piano Guys- who have made covers of Paradise, Titanium, Rolling in the Deep, A Thousand Years, just to name a few ;D

everyone listens to such... nice artists. like traditionally skillful artists and people who sing about things with meaning. I feel very embarrassed by my favourite artists but yolo ill post them anyway. I mainly listen to rappers these days. Not sure if its because all my friends listened to it in primary school and I just grew up with it, or if i really enjoy it LOL.

1. Chief Keef
Best hype song: 'Love Sosa' (made it when he was 16 under house arrest, absolute banger). Closest thing to a love song on my iphone: 'Can You Be My Friend'

2. Young Thug
Best song: 'With That'.   Honourable mention to his song 'Lifestyle' which is what made him famous but is actually his worst song

3. Rick Ross
Best song: 'Family Ties'. Shoutout to him for losing like 60kg over the last year by eating pears all day

4. Bryson Tiller
He's only got one album but the whole thing is amazing. best songs: '502 Come Up' 'Don't' & 'Rambo'

5. Playboi Carti
Not yet hit the mainstream but will blow up soon. Best song: 'Woke Up Like This'

I guess my music choice is quite weird considering my background but I really like;

Denzel Curry - his album Imperial is one of the best I've heard (This Life)
Yung Lean - hit or miss, but has some cracking songs (Volt, Kyoto)
Skepta - catchy songs with some good lyrics (That's not me)
JME - consistently good bars (Integrity)
Ivan B - really emotive lyrics (Our time together)

Songs are included in brackets ;).

Flume I mean, i've been listening to his music since Year 7 and he's been my favourite artist since (though I felt pressured to take my little flume sticker off my laptop when nobody knew who he was). Although he used to be considered alternative, he's recently become very popular and has become a bit more generic.. not sure how I feel about that. His music ranges widely and I can use his work for anything whether I need to study or pump myself up.

Chet Faker A great artist who I believe deserves some more recognition. His voice is so soothing and really helps me study. Then again, he's made an album with flume which features one of my favourite songs

Frank Ocean Okay, to be completely honest, I only listen to Pink + White and occasionally listen to the rest of the album... so I probably shouldn't consider him as a top 5; regardless, this song is amazing when it comes to relaxing  :)

Mura Masa This has been my favourite since I first heard it in December. I've listened to a few other songs of Mura Masa but I think LoveSick really connected with me. It's kind of a morning ritual to listen to it at least once.

Hermitude They were my first concert so of course they have a little place in my heart  ;D

A few artists who I couldn't fit in the top 5 are:
Wafia
The Internet
Sango
Ta-Ku
Tycho
Maybe a top 10?  ;)

In my opinion everything from Florence's album Ceremonials is amazing!
For The 1975 I'd defs recommend The Sound, Somebody Else, Heart Out and Robbers, but Chocolate, Girls and Settle Down are pretty popular as well!
My personal faves by Banks are Gemini Feed (a bit angsty I guess but I love its backing track) and Begging For Thread :D
Same! Those guys are amazing <3
Any suggestions of songs I *must* check out for the other 4? ;D

1. Linkin Park
They get a HEAP of hate for how much their musical style has changed in the two decades, comparing their early stuff to their late stuff is like two different bands. But I really respect them for keeping it interesting, and I love almost every song, often for very different reasons. They don't make my favourite songs, but they make my favourite albums.

2. Muse
These guys do incredible things with music, they can compose Dubstep rock operas and acoustic jazz pieces, put them on the same album and somehow it just works. The lead singer Matt Bellamy is unbelievably talented, has to be up there with the best male vocalists on the planet right now in my opinion ;D

3. John Butler
John has done some amazing work with his band John Butler Trio that I absolutely love (most famously, Zebra, the one that is like "Da, da, da da da. Da da da da. Da, da, da da da. Da da da da da da - That's not humming, that's the lyrics ;)) But the piece above is just something else entirely - Probably the sole reason I ever wanted to pick up a guitar in the first place. If you've got 12 minutes and want to see exactly what you can do with an acoustic guitar, look no further.

4. Hozier
Hozier wrote that song "Take me to Church" that was so overplayed after it went viral a few years ago, but the album it is on is just so full of passion. Such beautiful lyrics and music. Very big fan - Still waiting on a follow up album  :P

5. Green Day
These guys are one of my childhood favourites, and they became the first songs I learned on guitar. For this reason, they hold a special place in my heart (well, the section for music anyway... ;) )

Ouch, that's a tough pick. Without giving it too much thought, I'd have to say City of Delusion, Defector, Plug in Baby, Hysteria, Thoughts of a Dying Atheist... I'm actually a real fan of that three part symphony (Exogenesis) they put at the end of The Resistance as well! ;D

stop it...I also wanted to be a marine biologist and I don't even particularly enjoy science...
Why? Is it because I imagined me gliding with turtles? Looking at coral? I don't know...

As for my 5th favourite music artist (in case you were holding your breathe)...I can't call it. I really don't think there's anyone else that in 40 years time I'll still remember loving them. That's the yardstick I'm using. The bar is set high. Only 4 make the cut!

SEE IT'S ACTUALLY A THING. I've hated science since year 7 and even I was infected  :P I blame the movie Nim's Island.

Also as I realise I'm going off topic a bit here - my guilty pleasure when it comes to music is film sountracks. As weird as it might sound probably listen to these as much as I listen to regular music haha. Five favourite soundtrack artists are Hans Zimmer (he's holding a concert here soon and I really want to go but it's sooo expensive  :'( ), Danny Elfman, Masamichi Amano (mainly for Battle Royale), Michael Giacchino and Hideki Taniuchi  :)

I feel so alone, I listened only to classical music till about a year ago so the top of my list is still composers... is that allowed? :(

1. Beethoven
2. Tchaikovsky
3. Dvorak
4. Chopin
5. Rachmaninoff

I'm going to listen to as many of everyone's recommendations as I can though, because I enjoy (quality) music of almost any style except hip hop/rap which I swear isn't real music :p

Oh my goodness...SAME!!!! I only started listening to songs other than classical music around a year ago too... so glad to know I'm not alone..
Spoiler
shocking confession: I admit I didn't even know any songs by Mariah Carey, JB, Madonna, Adele or any of the top music artists and I pretty much knew nothing of them (like what they looked like, their age, etc. etc....) I just heard of them.... Anyway, you get the idea.. I was totally living under a rock haha....
Yep!! I LOVE LOVE LOVE BEETHOVEN!!!! IMO, his music was and still is the BEST haha (totally biased here haha)!!! But I feel like such a weirdo though especially when people play songs that are supposed to be super "well-known" and everyone is singing to it and I'm just awkwardly standing there not knowing what to do..... :(  :-[

You might like Ramin Djawadi :D

Oh don't you worry - I do! Game of Thrones soundtrack is hella lit  8)

It most definitely is a thing-- I also wanted to be a marine biologist!
HAHAHA me too!

This is actually the weirdest phenomenon - like marine biologist is a pretty specific career path. 100% proof of the illuminati in my opinion.

LOL really?  I have found my twin!  This is so me in every detail :')

Let's have a one-on-one natter in this classical music thread ;)

This marine biologist thing is almost as weird as every single poster in this thread absolutely loving The Avett Brothers. 8)

Further evidence for my theory provided by 13 Reasons Why (episode 11 I think), where one of the characters intends to pursue marine biology rather than become a pro basketball player. This phenomenon has now infiltrated pop-culture.

(i know this is off topic but unfortunately talking about music is a bit painful for me rn - missed out on splendour in the grass tickets  :'( )

In No Order:

1) Gojira - death metal bands, one of the most relevant metal bands out to today (Best to star with FMTS, Lefant Sauvage, Way of Flesh and Magma)
2) Opeth - death metal band, not has relevant as a decade ago but still makes enjoyable music. Ghost Reveries or Still Life are the best in my opinion so start with them if you want to.
3) Leprous - prog rock band, new album has a pop vibe and I definitely reccomend into people who listen to pop
4) Random EDM artists (especially Rufus) - just listen to this mainly for studying, nothing thought provoking like Gojira
5) Epic Space Music (Mortifier V Supernova Music is a very good one)

Woo, a fellow Leprous fan. 'Coal' is my favourite Leprous album, and one of my all time favourite albums from any band. It's a nice middle groud between Bilateral and TPS. If you're ever on the lookout for bands similar to Leprous, I suggest Agent Fresco and Haken.

Love Gojira and Opeth too. One of my mates saw Opeth at the Sydney Opera House last year, and I am eternally salty over not being able to go. Here's hoping they'll be back in Australia soon! Lastly, nice display picture -- that used to be my Skype picture at one point ;)

Nice to see a mate that has similar tastes. You don't see many Leprous fans on the internet, let alone a forum about vce and hsc discussions. Ive heard of Haken- never listened to them but I'll try sometime. Never heard of Agent Fresco. I have yet to listen to Coal, my favourites are probably The Congregation, TPS and Malina. What's your favourite Opeth Album(s) ? Mines probably Ghost Reveries and Pale Communion (clean).

I'm just as surprised as you are haha. Both good picks! TPS is my 2nd favourite Leprous album haha.

Ghost Reveries is my favourite album, but The Lotus Eater is my favourite song. Second is probably Blackwater Park, in part because Harvest is the very first Opeth song I ever heard. If you're into that kind of heavier prog, I'd recommend a Melbourne band called Ne Obliviscaris!

Initially I wasn't into their death metal and one my first songs I listened to was Harvest and In My Time of Need. Harvest is awesome and probably one of their best clean songs.

Because I'm interested!

I'll start us off:

1 || THE AVETT BROTHERS

2 || YUSUF ISLAM/CAT STEVENS
Particularly the album Tea for the Tillerman.

3 || JOSH ROUSE

4 || ANGUS & JULIA STONE

5 || JOSH PYKE

And then a bunch of others, like Radiohead, The Smiths and Orla Gartland. Your turn - recommend me some music! ;D

EDIT: Somehow forgot about Jack Johnson! Eep!

Two years later, not heaps has changed for me. I'd probably go like:

1. The Avett Brothers
2. Orla Gartland
3. Cat Stevens
4. Gang of Youths
5. The National

Definitely going to listen to more Josh Rouse again, though, after seeing this initial post.

2. OneRepublic
3. Billie Eilish (a little cliche but she's still amazing)
4. Coldplay
5. Taylor Swift (for the nostalgia factor)
