"Describe" in Business Management

Hello,

So another question regards to Edrolo. One question asks "Describe some benefits entrepreneurs bring to business." Obviously, the key word here is describe. The full 4/4 mark example which was given is:

Entrepreneurs seek out opportunities, manage business activities, take calculated financial risks and experience business success. A business opportunity could be because of a market need that is not currently being satisfied such as readily available, cheap and healthy fast food.

Entrepreneurs also create new businesses, provide work for suppliers and design new jobs which pay income for workers to spend on other goods and services. A new business could be something not considered before such as people driving their own cars as taxis like Uber.

To me, describing would be discussing how this impacts a business, whereas the example has just given some examples, and doesn't really relate to how an entrepreneur benefits business. My response was:
Some benefits which entrepreneurs bring to business include their ability to drive innovation and productivity, as well as their willingness to take risks, as these are two factors crucial to business success. Some other benefits include their management abilities and their past experiences (i.e. failures and successes), as this brings insight into a corporation.

I can tell my response probably wasn't worth the full 4 marks, but could someone please explain what markers are looking for when they ask to describe, as I don't completely understand the example as there isn't much relation to the question?

Thank you

For questions that begin with the word 'describe', the examiner is looking for you to identify the features of the term, and provide examples to compliment this. You want to write about the term with more detail than the task word, outline, but slightly less than the task word, explain. Because of this, there are often many ways you can describe a term, with marks often being awarded for the amount of detail you go into, rather than talking about a specific point (obviously, your answer still needs to be relevant to the question).

Do you have a list of all the task words you can be asked in business management? This is something that will definitely aid your studies in this subject :)

Yep, they are some of them! (And the most common ones). Here's a list of the majority of task words (there shouldn't be too many more you'd come across)

Analyse Break into parts and examine, e.g. essential components in decision-making or problem-solving process.
Apply Use theory to help in a practical example. Show or make links, relationships or connections.
Compare Talk about BOTH similarities and differences
Define Accurately state or explain the precise meaning of a word, phrase or term.
Describe Provide a detailed account of something.
Discuss Examine an issue or response and state arguments or opinions covering both sides of the issue or response involved in the stimulus material. Eg. Advantages and Disadvantages
Distinguish To recognise or show points of difference between two or more concepts of items. Note the distinctive characteristics.
Evaluate Talk about the advantages, disadvantages and conclude with an opinion about the topic.
Explain To make the meaning of something clear, detailed and understandable.
Identify To simply state, list.
Outline Provide a brief description of the terms or topic.
Propose To put forward (a plan or suggestion) for consideration by others.
Provide reasons/ Justify Justify your choice or answer. Give valid reasons or evidence to support an answer or conclusion. Say why it is so.

So many people lose marks, simply because they don't know what the question is asking them to do! So, knowing these will be key to doing well in busman! Feel free to ask any more questions :)
