They opened last Monday. Apparently everyone has been having trouble with Chem 2, so maybe you'll get a good stream.

So i was planning to do a genetics major and i just realised that i can't!!!

http://bsc.unimelb.edu.au/genetics

There are 3 second year subjects i need to do which are all pre-reqs for the compulsory 3rd year subjects.

But i only have 2 second year subject slots left :(

3 has to go towards the medicine pre-req subjects, i already used a "BS-SCISUBLV123 - Science Level 1, 2 & 3" slot this year and the other one left over has to be for Chemistry 2.

Which leaves me only 2 available slots.

I guess there's no way to do genetics unless i do an extra subject somehow -.-

You can do a minimum of 4 breadth and a maximum of 6 so you can have two extra science subjects if you don't do all the breadth. Maybe that would allow you to fit more in.

Hahaha :P There should be a slot at the botton of the study plan. "Science and breadth" I think it's called.

Are you science or biomed mate?

If you are in science then you have to do all three of Principles of Genetics, Genes and Genomes and Experimentsin Genetics.

If you are in biomed then you just have to do Principles of Genetics and one of Experiments in Genetics, Techniques in Molecular Science or Microbes, Infections and Responses.

I'm doing Science, i didn't realise that you could do less than 6 breadth subjects :P

I guess if i want to do genetics, i will have to give up a bludge breadth subject for a genetics subject :/

Why would you even do six breadths?  I'm taking the minimum amount of ONE right now and the essay is killing me.

Isn't the minimum amount 4??

Well doing one in each semester enables you to do something different....It's refreshing instead of doing all 4 science subjects :) Not to mention less effort required

The minimum amount of breadths is 6. With 2 of the 6 subjects (12.5 credit points each) that can be chosen from another faculty (like the other 4 breadths) or you could choose to elect a subject that is within your own faculty. So essentially you get 2 free subjects.

Yes, the minimum amount is four but I credited three from my previous degree so I only have to take one as a part of Science.

OH i gotcha.

I was also wondering on a sidenot:; would not having done a 300-level practical subject disadvantage if you decide to do an honours year?

Just curious because Biotech has no practical subject required....unlike genetics

I'm with you; I'd like to do as much breadth as possible (:

Trust me, it's the best decision you can make. Two languages. Russian 1-6 and German with a Diploma of Languages. Arts students can't even learn to languages like that, but it's loopholed so Science students can. Enrolled into it successfully and got accepted today.

My degree roles out as BSc in Chemistry / Medicinal Chemistry / Pharmacology with a DipLang in German and Russian if I take up two CAP subjects, and then medicine pre-requisites, for only a 4 year bachelors. It sounds funky at least :P

Edit: We couldn't think more alike. I wanted to do cool breadth subjects because English was such a different side of me and it's manifested itself into Languages. Breadth are the best, I wish the maximum you could do was 8 subjects so that I could have picked two to replace physics and calculus in first year, which brought me abysmal marks.

I have a question about subjects for next year.
I am considering whether to do Principles of Genetics as a subject for next year, or whether to do Fundementals of Cell Biology instead.
Can anyone give me advice if they have done one of them/or both, which one I might prefer?

I really enjoyed the rote learning site of Biology this year because I am not naturally smart but I am willing to work hard to memorise things, and I am less skilled at solving problems. I enjoy human biology more than animal biology. Anyway, if anyone could tell me anything that would help me decide between these two subjects then that would be greatly appreciated!
