hey guys,
i did the GAT today and went horrible, due to lack of sleep and believing the GAT is useless i only wrote half of 1 essay and answered 30 multiple choice questions before walking out at like 11am, i have just been told the GAT does matter towards your ATAR even if u dont miss any exam is this true, cos im am so worried right now ?

It can't bring your ATAR down, I know that much. I really don't think you need to be worried about it.

It has pretty much no bearing towards your ATAR. I cannot stress this enough. All of the other people who have said so are either trying to scare you or are mucking around (sometimes it is hard to tell if someone is trolling especially when it is typed up on ATARnotes). Another possibility is that they are mistaken. Now the only affect it may have is on your consideration to university, but that will be under pretty extreme situations, possibly if they have to compare say, a few people with one more spot left (given similar ATAR scores). There are more examples of how it may affect you but you can get a 99.95 and 'fail' the GAT.
Just for further information, the GAT predicted that I would get much higher in Maths and Science than in English (that turned out to be the other way round).

It cant mark you down but if you dont do well on the GAT it means you cant get marked up either..
So everything is now down to your exam and SAC scores where as those who did quite well on the GAT may be marked up slightly if their SAC marks dont correspond to their exam score (so eg. Pretty bad SAC marks, but really really good exam, and then pretty good on the GAT, may get marked up)

The GAT can't pull you down, but it can pull you up. Simple.

Pretty extreme circumstance, I highly doubt if you're aiming for a 99.95 ATAR, that you would perform terribly on the GAT.

My English tutor is currently undergoing research at Melbourne university on tests such as the GAT, UMAT etc. She claims her professor is the chief of the UMAT this year. She may be fibbing but has no reason to. Anyway, she said yes the GAT is sort of like an insurance policy, but she also said that it is taken into consideration when calculating the study scores. She then showed us the formula VCAA use, very long but it did use the GAT. I'm not sure where all these people who think the GAT isn't important got their information from. Perhaps they are correct and my tutor is using scare tactics, but I doubt it. She claimed that she petitioned against vcaa who at one stage were attempting to make the GAT contribute to the actual atar score. She said it was terrible because they would be rewarding natural intelligence instead of hard work.
She showed us that, the study scores and scaling of the sacs is highly related to your schools overall performance on the GAT. To this I got quite upset. First of all I am disadvantaged because I go to my school (which is a wonderful place, but has a focus more on trades and passing) and then I am even more disadvantaged because no one in my school cares about the GAT.
Anyway its over now. I just wanted to contribute because I think a lot of people are like whats the point! I also think its a little bit of a shame people don't put a lot of effort into it because it really is quite interesting! Especially the artwork and the first writing task! You can have a lot of fun with it! So sorry this is so long, well done if you read it all!

I should have done the writing sections first! I spent 2 hours 15 minutes on the multiple choice and only left 45 minutes to write two essays. I ended up rushing them so much that they are pathetic. The only part of the GAT which actually matters to me is the one part that I didn't put in enough effort!
And the reason why it is so important that I do well on the writing section of the GAT is because my literature teacher kind of holds a grudge against me and is giving me bad marks (I'm currently scoring the lowest marks in the class in literature, when I think I'm above average) so I need the GAT or the exam or some sort of external assessment to prove to VCAA that I am just being marked too harshly. But because I didn't spend enough time on the writing section, I am going to get a really bad mark and they will think that my SAC scores were fair and I won't get any scaling up!
Ffs I wish I could resit the GAT right now and start with the writing sections...
