But the thing is, what really distinguishes 'harsh' marking with 'lenient' marking? Because usually theres always a right or straight up wrong answer.. anyone know?

umm well they just accept a lot less detailed answers.

E.g. unit 3 2010, one question where they were too lenient was with "what stage of sleep does sleeptalking occur in?" And they accepted any stage. So 98% of the state got a mark there. When actually the correct answer is stage 4 NREM. See how that's being lenient? If the rumours are correct, then they'll just be accepting very broad answers isn't of not awarding marks for them.

Note that the only 'logical' reason that they'd do this is because otherwise the A+ cut off would be too low.

It depends a lot on the year and the rest of the state. If everyone goes amazing, it is going to be harder to get a higher score. If everyone one goes shocking, it won't be so hard. It changes every year so it all depends, sometimes B to A could get you there, other times you'll need all A+. Hope I helped  :)

B's will never get you a 40. If the entire year does shocking, then the mark for an A+ will be lower, but you will still need to get A+'s.

That's if you pretty much get a high B+ and then very high A+'s for the other 2 GAs. But what i meant was that 3 B's or 3 B+'s cannot get you a 40.

Yep. That can happen. But the number of people who achieve something in the 40s with a B+ is literally like 3-4 people out of the 16000+ doing the subject.. That's just an estimate, but probably an accurate one at that. Something like that is EXTREMELY rare. Just know that 40+ requires a lot of work, if you get a B+ on the mid year hope is not completely lost but prepare yourself to work exponentially harder than you did on unit 3 to get in the 40s.
