Year 11 might be graduating this year?
« on: December 12, 2016, 04:12:40 pm »
I got an ATAR which was enough for me to get into a course I applied this year. Thoughts?

Hey so I just got my ATAR for three of my subjects this year (just about now), and I received exceptionally awesome results. I did English 3/4 in year 10, but after this year, I got an ATAR since I was eligible for one because of the English. I got a 94.35, which was enough for me to get into a course at ANU I applied this year. Should I go on to year 12? Or should I just graduate and stuff VCE. It would such a shame, because I really did prepare for this year, but seeing as I've already gotten into my course from previous years' clearly-in ATAR -- I'm considering just taking a year off for work and travel, and deferring, that is if I get the course I want to get into. I'm totally ecstatic about this, but I want to hear everyone's opinion on this.

First off, congratulations, I've never heard of anybody accidentally passing VCE :D

If I were you, I'd defer. You have an exceptional score, but what's more important is your score is enough to get you into your desired course. A year of work or travel or whatnot will certainly make university easier.

EDIT: I should note that you should also consider prerequisites for yoru desired course, and if you'd be okay in the sudden shift in social circles, and I assume, leaving home.

I'd go back for Year 12. While it might be good enough for your course, there's a lot more to Year 12 than just VCE.

Think Valedictory, the experience of being a Year 12, spending another year with your friends, formal, muck up day, the list goes on...

Also, while a 94.35 is quite awesome, you've probably only done 4-5 subjects right now? Maybe even less? You've got a huge potential to crack the 98s or 99s and the actual journey of Year 12 is going to be really beneficial for your university studies (helps you understand how to cope with various types of pressure a bit better).

Gosh, this is an AMAZING achievement so congrats!!
I am assuming you did english, bio, classical studies and methods got exceptional scores which is just amazing but you might want to consider these factors:
- even though you have got amazing results, there may be a 5th subject you may wanna do?
- Nothing can lower your ATAR down but you can improve it if you do year 12 next year and you might get a scholarship and a higher ATAR which is always nice
- more skills, year 12 teaches you skills that you need beyond year 12
- skipping a year might seem nice for now but you might regret it later?
Whatever happens, you've done so well already so make the best decision for you. Good luck.

Here are the numbers.

Source: http://www.vtac.edu.au/files/pdf/Aggregate-ATAR-2016.pdf

Your aggregate must have been between 169.62-77, so about 170. With 4 subjects, one of them being 41, that comes out to a 41 and 3 subjects that average 43. Let's suppose your worst subject was about a 38, because you said you did badly in Methods, leaving you with around 45 and 46 for the last two subjects. What's the best score you could get with these scores?

Well, suppose you get 50s in your remaining two subjects. Spesh goes to 55, so your top 4 is now 41, 55, 50, 46 for a total of 192. Add your 38 and 45 as your 5th/6th subjects and your aggregate is around about 200. This year, that's a 99.6. Take this calculation with a grain of salt as I've made many, many assumptions, but this is what's possible. Keep that in mind too, on top of what everyone else has said.

I think we need to first clarify - are you actually attending a school or doing it through distance ed? Because this makes a world of difference when making this decision.

If you're attending a school - I'd 100% say do it. Year 12 has by far been the best year of my life and I wouldn't trade the experiences I had this year for anything else in the world.

But if you're doing it through distance ed, and you don't get that social environment it could be really boring - it isn't the exam and learning aspect of yr 12 that i'll cherish, but rather the environment and friendships that I wont ever forget.
