Hi guys, I am currently in year 11 taking these subjects: Physics, Methods, English, Chemistry and Further(3+4). I'm looking to do Algorithmics next year from Distance Education. What would you guys recommend me to do to prepare for it? Aaron informed me that it's uni level maths and programming. Thanks so much!

Aside from just making a start on the subject content already, you could probably gain from spending some time understanding graphs (the things called networks in further, incase you're not already doing that module). No need to go into the forward/backward scanning stuff unless you're already doing it with your class, but Algorithmics seems to really like graphs (networks) and contains a bunch of algorithms about them.
Another concept that you'll probably gain from looking into is combinatorics. You could start with 'factorials' and then try to understand 'combinations' and 'permutations', which your yr11 methods textbook may have a section on, but you'll probably find it better to do your study online (I like Khanacademy's combinatorics videos!)
Other than that, make sure you also look into VCE Software Development. (maybe you already have considered it!)
Algorithmics being a Higher Education Scored Study is probably going to be supported with greater resources than sofdev, but it's also more mathsy/theoretical. I personally find the theoretical/algorithms side more interesting anyway but it might be worth having a good look at both subjects.

I have little idea about the scaling, it will be really interesting to see how this year's group plays out! Hopefully it will attract strong students and scale quite favourably, but who knows

I hope the subject gains momentum in the future. It's nice to see a subject that is new and challenging, in comparison to Apps & Softdev. I would have been ecstatic for a subject like this when I did VCE.

I am currently studying Algorithmics. It will be interesting how much the subject is scaled by, though I can't really estimate the value.
By all means do algorithmics next year, it's very interesting. There is a lot of content, so make sure you create a summary from day 1, or you'll be filled with a few books of unnecessary notes.

Hey. I am already doing fairly tough subjects already. And do you think I would be able to (not bludge) focus on it a fair bit and still do pretty well. I know that in Software Dev you can pretty much bludge the whole class and still get a Study Score over 30. What other subjects are you doing? And how hard are you finding it?

I don't know if it's the same as other schools but in ours (JMSS) you had to have successfully done units 1/2 methods to do algo. So hopefully it should scale as well as methods (+5 increment)? All depends on how well we do in other subjects... but I know that in our class of 17, like 14 people are doing specialist and other high scaling subjects so I definitely think algo will scale up at least as much as mathmeth.

I'm already doing year 11 methods, physics and chemistry and I'm finding them fairly easy at that. Lost of homework, but I can understand everything and do well. Hopefully algorithmics won't take way too much time away from the other subjects.

I completed Algorithmics this year in 2017.
I also did Software Development in the new study design in 2016, where I chose to learn Python for the GUI/SAT, which ended up being very useful for algorithmics.
Expectations.
From the get go I knew that this subject would be very difficult to achieve high results in. Currently, most of the schools that offer the subject are select entry/private schools, so the competition is rough. I personally told myself to take it as a fun bludge subject. The median at my school, for Algorithmics was 33 last year, whereas the average across all subjects is about 37, so I was okay with not doing well.
I enjoyed the subject a lot, and nabbed a 40!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I will do a writeup on thoughts on the subject, the content and the pathways into uni with it. (You can skip subjects if you want to :) )
