What VCE subject should I pick?

Hi everyone,

I was just wondering, what subject should I pick out of the 3 listed for VCE? What would be more beneficial and useful, and please let me know if you have any knowledge on any of them!

Thanks,

You should get your hand on the textbooks for each of them and flick through them to see if they interest you, as different people like and are good at different things.

Agree. I don't think this is something that you should be deciding based on a poll of complete strangers you don't know (and vice-versa). You are going to be interested in different things, so opinions here reflect their own experiences.. which aren't necessarily going to reflect what the subject is actually like.

Useful in what way? What is useful to you may not be so useful to somebody else (again, and vice-versa). What do you plan on doing after school? This could be the first step in determining suggestions. Another angle you could take is looking at your current subject list and thinking about your feelings/attitudes towards them. Understanding who you are, what you enjoy/what you don't enjoy etc. is so important in making decisions like this.

The whole idea of elective/choice subjects in year 9-10 is for you to explore and find interests (even though alot of the time students just pick what their friends are doing).

Hey there,

Very true, but I'm in the situation where I've chosen the subjects I want and need and have one more spot to fill, and I'm interested in these three but am stuck in picking the right one. Also it would be great to see the opinions of other VCE students who are doing one of these subjects. I want it to open my horizons in case I don't end up doing what I want at the moment in the future...

Fair enough. Will this be a unit 1/2 or 3/4 you are choosing?

The reason why I stated the above is because other students here may enjoy and recommend one particular subject - this is not to say that you are going to like it. I personally think your decision should be based on discussion with people you know (e.g. family, friends, school career counsellors, school teachers etc). You can use the results from this poll... but again, no one here knows you or your interests.

For example, if you have absolutely hated Science in Year 9-10, then I would definitely not recommend something like Biology (given it's in the 'science' group). If you aren't strong in maths and/or business, then would Economics be a good choice? Maybe not.

This is why I asked you for your feelings/attitudes towards your current subject listing - to give the readers an idea of what you are interested in, what you enjoy (and what you hate as well). Opening your horizons is one thing, but doing a subject you will absolutely hate is another... if it is a unit 3/4, your dislike for a subject can influence the final result you achieve.

Perhaps it may be a good idea to let everyone know what you have currently selected for your VCE subjects and what you hope to do once you finish school.

To the OP, what's your current line up of VCE subjects besides the last spot? This might be helpful for others to help you decide.
VCE: Psych | Eng Lang | LOTE | Methods | Further | Chem
Uni: Bachelor of Science (Hons) - genetics
Current: working (sporadically on AN)

How good would you say you are at maths (like.. give us an average score or some other measure)? I would suggest either Accounting or Economics based on what you've said so far and your current lineup.

You have both maths and business management which are important. Personally I wouldn't choose a science unless you intended on going down a science-based pathway after school. Both acc & eco are important if you do pursue something business related later on.

Because you haven't answered my previous post yet, I'm going to assume that you're in year 10 at the moment due to you mentioning general maths.. so just pick one and have a go. See if you like it or not. If you don't, change it. You aren't locked in until the end.

Hey,

The current lineup I'm thinking to do so far are:

English, General/Further or Methods, Business Management, LOTE Italian, I.T or Studio Art and one more spot... :)

why i.t. or studio? could you not just do both and fill your spot that way? (: two maths might be kind of a headache, but plenty of people do that as well (it feels like 90% of this forum do methods or specialist or both ahaha). if you weren't a massive fan of sciences, there's probably no reason to pick one up – bio and psych aren't prereqs for anything that i can think of (but please someone correct me if that's not the case!) speaking from experience, i wasn't big on science either. i accelerated bio last year mostly because of parental pressure and while i didn't hate it, i didn't do particularly well either because i wasn't motivated to study for it, so. i'd say pick the thing you're most interested in, and if you don't know which that is, you have year eleven to experiment and switch in and out of things!

the kids at my school doing accounting are apparently having one long continuous nightmare but if you like numbers it might be your thing, no idea about economics because we don't run it, i preferred bio to psych because it just felt more basic science-y to me. but that's not saying any of these will apply to you! (:

he's in year ten this year, picking subjects for year eleven (: mentioned it mid last paragraph of op (:
SUBJECTS |  English [47], Literature [46], Extension History @LTU [4.5]

Thanks, OP edited his post after my initial posts so didn't re-read. Assumed it anyway

If you want to go Commerce or give yourself more options, you should probably do Methods. If you're strictly going for Business, then go General. Aside from that, I'm more inclined to say Accounting or Economics for the last spot for the same reasons as Aaron has mentioned.

Patriciarose is right.

That'll be because a lot of the users here are aiming for courses in biomed, medicine, health science, science, engineering, commerce and a few more that I can't list off the top of my head, where Methods and/ or Spesh are pre-reqs. Biology and Psych are not pre-reqs that I'm aware of either, unless you want a specific science degree in some institutions.

This'll happen in a lot of subjects. It's VCE. It's also the same further on.
Economics depends on the person and is more about holistic commercial thinking. Majority of the kids got it almost instantly back when I did Units 1 & 2 Economics, whereas I only did after a lot of behind-the-scenes study. I would recommend you check out the study designs for your subjects so you can make a more informed decision based on whether you like what you see on there.
