Title: Practice Exam Tracker And Statistics (Spreadsheet) Version Pi- The FINAL Version
Post by: b^3 on July 15, 2011, 11:36:35 pm
Ok now before you mods move this, this has a right to be here since the methods students are the one who will use it most, spamming trial exams. It would have been posted in the notes section but the file types accepted is only .doc and .pdf not .xlsx.

A little while back I made a spreadsheet to keep track of my progress of practice exams in the lead up to mid year exams, I did post it up here somewhere. Anyway as a way of procrastination I altered it and now I give to you version ! It lets you enter in your marks for each practice exam you do and it will calculate and rank your subjects depending on your scores. It now has a score predictor based on a trendline that is generated as well as predictions for good and bad days. Anyway I thought it might be useful for some of you guys who spam practice exams, although alot of you probably have already started a while ago.

Feedback on the accuracy of the predictions are welcomed. It sucessfully predicted both of my midyear results for Chemistry - A and Physics - A+.

****VERSION Pi - The Final Version****
After a lot of small/medium updates I have finally got it how I want it. This will be the FINAL version. You now don't have to manually copy down formulas, the cells clear themselves and use the relevant formula automatically. There are other small fixes here and there. Anyway, for the last time, Enjoy!

Ok now before you read on I would like to remind you that you should throughly understand the content of the course before you start practice exams. Also there is no point in doing a load of exams if you do not learn from your mistakes, go through each question you got wrong, work out why you got it wrong and do it again.

If you have any questions don't be afraid to ask, just make a post in this topic.
Any ideas for any new features are also welcome.

Here are a couple of screenshots (using made up data).

There may be issues if run on a MAC, unfortunately I cannot find a fix for the issues but it is still functional, just not entirely.

Note: This spreadsheet and it's creator does not endorse illegally obtaining exams. Use at your own will.

Previous Versions Information
*********Version (approaching pi)*********
Ok guys, I finally worked out how to get the trendline equation work correctly. You can now enter in how many more exams you plan on doing and it will give a prediction based on the trendline of your score (percentage not study score) on a good, normal or bad day. Also there is an option to put in your desired score and it will calculate (again based on the trendline) how many more exams you need to do to acheive that score. Have fun guys & girls.

**********Version 3.1415926535 - More than just the Asian five**********
Ok here is the latest version. It has been updated so there is a quick rename of subjects and exam sections allowing you to change from just the asian five subjects. Also added is a comparison of the means and sd of the section of each exam relative to each other. NOTE: Not all the subjects you do may fit so if you cannot make everything work or run out of sheets with the right number of sections.

**********Version 3.14159**********
Ok now I have altered the Exam tracker. The version jumps version 3 because I think I kinda over did it on that one. It did have a trendline on each graph for each subject which you could use to predict your score after so many exams, and how many exams you would need to do to obtain that score but it was getting too complicated and was making too many things for you, the user to enter and change. So thats got the axe. For version 3.14159 I have added 3 charts, one to track the amount of exams for each subject, and two for the subjects split into science and maths. Also added is the automatic counting of the number of exams completed but to make the graphs scale you will need to do a sort of "refresh" on the summary page. Anyway this should be the last version so enjoy!

V2.01: Slight change to instructions to stop colour rating system malfunction.

DISCLAIMER: This is only a prediction of your result on the day based off your previous results. A variety of different factors plays a part in your performance on the day, so do not rely on this prediction.

I would say sticky it but do you think it will get more traffic on general vce or here on methods? anyway its your choice.

Well it applies to everyone, and Gen VCE gets more traffic I believe

Thanks guys, see what happens when I continually put chemistry off, procrastination has it's positives (srs though I have to get it done). Oh well there is always tomorrow. I have put the work off all holidays, instead doing practice exams for methods. :)

If i need something else to do, i'll work on v3.0. What I have planned is adding graphs and working out say the trendline for the last couple of exams you did for each subject and then using the gradient to see whether you are heading in the right direction, where you are improving the most and what you need to work on, say mc section or whatever. Anyway i'll see if I get bored one day.

This is pure awesome work.

I'll probably make a few changes to suit my preferences rather than use it as is. I focus a bit more on questions that I got wrong rather than going through and looking at percentages. I'm also lazy and can't be bothered typing in the names of the trial exams. So yeah, my additions would be along the lines of an easier to use, more automated interface and keeping track of the type of errors I make. I should have about 3 weeks of doing boring learning to use excel work in ITA so this should count as legitimate work to do for that :).
Title: Re: Practice Exam Tracker And Statistics (Spreadsheet)
Post by: b^3 on July 16, 2011, 12:58:07 am
Do whatever works for you, as for focussing on questions you got wrong, what I am doing is I have another book that after each exam every question and that means every question I get wrong, even if it was a silly mistake like 1+1=3 or just I was on the wrong track, I redo it and get it right. I was trying to write a macro into it so that it would resort the subjects in terms of rank as soon as you opened that sheet. And also could add an automatic letter grade depending on the grade distributions, which would require a year column. Anyway I'm sure i'll need a breal at some point before exams so it'll probably get changed.

Well I originally whipped up only the physics and chem unit 3 pages for the mid years exams a month or two ago which took idk 30mins. Then this holidays I added the methods page, everything else, the stats and other subjetcs I added tonight, well it is yesterday now. Setting everything else up took 1-2 hours since I had to set everything up and copy the grade distributions over. I wasted 1 hour of that two hours on trying to get the stupid macro to work and still didn't get it in the end.

Haha this is amazing! I'll probably need to spend some time working this out :P

It's so much more complex than my spreadsheet that I use at the moment (and for midyears). Mine only calculated the average percentage across each year and each company, as well as overall :D

Good work b^3, must have taken a while to make! appreciate the good work and keep it up :D

This is too awesome :)

Brilliant work!

Would it be possible to make a tutorial on creating pages, etc. so people who do accounting, psych, etc. can add their subjects? Or better, add like a few blank subject pages (say 3-4) that are linked to all the sats and summaries so that a bit of customisation is possible for non azn-5 ppl?

Great job, again :)

Yeh i can give it a go, but not right now German Grand Prix starts in 10 mins. Probably in the next couple of days so check back, but ill leave this version here aswell. Dam, it won't be version 3.14159 (pi) anymore, hmm what could I use instead.

Just so I know, what kind of sets of questions are there for other subs, like methods has an exam on only short answer than one with MC and ER while physics has three sections and chem has MC and SA?

And just so I know Rohitpi the bold blue and red text is probably what caught your attention right?

Just had a look at the revised edition, definitely more people should download it. I'll see if we can get general vce study guides/files onto the notes section of the forum as well (though there might not be that many things which can apply across the board).

Thanks Taiga, and it looks like there are less downloaded than actuall have, since the attachments disapperead in the update, It lost 20 or so and then everytime I update the version with a new file it resets to 0.

I'm still trying to think of new updates for it. I really wanted to make the trendline/mark predictor and vice versa work but no luck. If I can get it to work I could add say a mark range for you on a good day or a bad day with say 10% either side of the predicted mark. Also what would you guys think of say a summary paragraph for each subject that changes after every exam. Saying things like you are strong in ____ but need to improve on _____ while you are most consistant in __________. Or would it just be useless information that most of us should be able to see from the data (as most of us should know what sd and things mean).

Ok I have updated to Version approaching pi. This includes more statistics on the data, creating trendlines and predicting you scores based on how many exams you plan to do on good and bad days. Also has a 'desired score' entry to work out how many exams you need to do to acheive the score you want. For more information and to download the updated version read the original post. Also what do you think of the updated version?

After a quick bit of googling I don't think there is anyway of making it work properly on a Mac, the autofitler options are the way it works are different on a mac (apparently). Sorry but I don't think I can help you there due to Mac Excel's setup. Does everything else work? As in can you still use it without ranking the subjects?

Awesome program except im having trouble adding my specific subjects to it.
After i clear the cells using the tabs down the bottom and entering my subjects in the setup page, what is the next step ? I think i have to assign grade distributions for each subject but not entirely sure.
Thanks in advance

Once the cells are cleared you can, if you want to put the grade distributions in. They are not completely necessary they are just their to see what grade you would of gotten for that year (based off VCAA exams, difficulty of exams over different companies varies). If you want the grade distributions they can be found here.
2006: http://www.vcaa.vic.edu.au/vce/statistics/2006/statssect3.html
2007: http://www.vcaa.vic.edu.au/vce/statistics/2007/statssect3.html
2008: http://www.vcaa.vic.edu.au/vce/statistics/2008/statssect3.html
2009: http://www.vcaa.vic.edu.au/vce/statistics/2009/statssect3.html
2010: http://www.vcaa.vic.edu.au/vce/statistics/2010/statssect3.html

Next to do is to start filling in the practice exams as you do them. Only enter data in the (  ) marks and (  ) total columns, everything else should work itself.

I probably should be more clear, you can enter the names and year of the exams in the left columns aswell. In the image below the columns that have a red border are the ones you can enter in. You can change the grade distributions too if you want.

Ok xtremeownage, here is the customised version for you, for further, IT Apps, pysch and Geography. It isn't completely fixed up but it will do the trick. I haven't had time to change all the names of the button that jump to the other pages so just use the tabs at the bottom of the sheet. You can still change the names of the buttons by right clicking on them. I filled in some of the grade distributions but haven't had time to fill them all in, so again if you want them, click the link provided in the file and fill them in. Sorry that I couldn't completely fix it all up but I have to start work for tonight, it was taking too long to fix the entire thing up.

NOTE: I will no longer be offering to create custom spreadsheets as it takes too much time to fix up everything. Hopefully the built in customisation can do the job for you guys.

Post by: b^3 on October 05, 2011, 07:56:03 pm
Sorry about that, I kinda omitted english because well, lets just say I 'dislike' english. For the alternative if you want to add english in, in place of something else then you could replace one of the methods or spesh exam 1's if you want just to put in the overall score. Or if you want to seperate it into the 3 sections then replacing one of the physics (probably unit 3 since it has already passed) slots and putting it all in there. Just make sure you change the text on the setup page, it will do most of the work for you in switching things around.

I would lof liked to added them for you guys before we actually do the exams but I'm sorry, I just don't have the time right now. Any suggestions besides additional slots?

b^3, this thing is so freakin cool! It's so much fun to do an exam then put the numbers in! and I've colour coded the collumns that I put the exams in, the first 5 or so are blue to signifiy that I'm just getting into the groove, then the next 5-6 are green which is where I want to be getting A+s by, then the next ones after that are gold to signify the point at which I would like to reach my target score.

AND i've started to notice wierd trends, like in every one of my subects that I've done 5 or more exams for, the 4th exam is done badly (In english, Economics and International studies they all got worse in the 4th exam, then got better again on the 5th)

GO B^3!! WOOOH!

B^3, amazing job. It works brilliantly. The only question I have is, how can I add a 6th subject to spreadsheets??
Title: Re: Practice Exam Tracker And Statistics (Spreadsheet) Version Pi- The FINAL Version
Post by: b^3 on April 04, 2012, 07:56:15 pm
It depends really, for example if you aren't doing say methods, then that opens up two slots, and you just have to change the names around and read the "setup" page. You could copy a sheet by I think it may not get included in the predicitions and statistics page. If I had the time (I don't really atm, should be writing a lab report right now.....) I could have a look at it and try to include it, although I don't remember half of how I set up the groupings/lists linked to the cells, it ended up quick complicated in the end, so I probably wont get to have another look at it.

The reason why I only made 5 slots is because of English, kinda because I didn't fell that I would get enough english exams done to make it worth putting it in, that was me though, didn't account for it. So if it doesn't fit, then I'd suggest excluding english in one and say, making another copy of the file, clearing each sheet out and just filling one up for english. Sorry about that. Also note that the predicition is just a prediction, there is no guarentee, its more there just to see if you are improving or staying the same, and too see which sub jects you need to work on more.

Hope that helps :)

Hey b^3 :) I love this spreadsheet and even customized it myself to update it to 2011 grade distributions and add automatic grade calculation for the distributions given. This will make it much easier to keep tracking of my 40+ bio practice exams and I really like the mean, SD and prediction. :) Thanks so much!

Hello,
When you type in desired score on the Predictions tab (i'm referring to the methods exam 1 and 2 subjects)
Do you type in the marks (160 downwards for exam 2 and 80 downwards for exam 1) or the percentage (100% downwards?)

I'm kinda confused. If i type in the marks for exam 2, it seems to work alright but not when i type in marks for exam 1

Thanks
I really hope someone finds this and answers. Apparently, this topic hasn't been posted for more than 30 days... :o
