UoM or ANU?

I'm tossing up between doing an Arts degree at Melbourne Uni or ANU (probably B Asia Pacific Studies), majoring in something like Chinese and Psychology or maybe International Studies. The main appeal for ANU is that I'll be living on campus, so hopefully there'll be more of a college experience with friends around 24/7. But then again, Canberra seems quite dull and it'll be more expensive than staying at home. Either way I'm definitely planning to go on exchange so that might make up for missing out on the campus life in Australia. What I'm concerned about with Melbourne Uni is that it'll be too similar to high school and it's harder to get to know new people because everyone has different classes and things. So I'm just curious about people's experiences at the two universities and if anyone has any advice it would be much appreciated. Thanks :)

Well I've got no experience but think of the adventure and experience of living in an unfamiliar state! If I had the option I'd be doing it in a heartbeat.

Had you thought of going to Melbourne uni but moving out and living on campus? That way you'll get your campus life at a cheaper cost compared to moving to Canberra. Also, life in uni is as interesting as you want it to be. I know many people who just attends lectures in uni and never take part in any activities or clubs etc, then complain to me that uni life is boring... I just don't see the logic in their complaints since there are more than enough stuff going on at most campus to keep your hands and head and legs and every part of your body busy ten times over.

If I were you, I'd choose UoM. Uni life isn't similar to high school and you still have lots of chances to meet new people even though you go to Mel Uni
I think UoM also has accomodations as well right? Because my friends live there

One thing to consider if you want to live on campus (I'm highlighting this because you mentioned Canberra being more expensive)

Average residential hall accommodation prices for ANU are approximately:
$330 a week for catered
$180 a week for self-catered

For Melbourne it seems they only have catered accommodation and that average price is about $550-650 a week

ANU Accommodation fee summary
UoM Accommodation fee summary

Going by those charts, the order of pricing would (seemingly) be:
 - Living at home, going to UoM
 - Living on campus at ANU
 - Living on campus at UoM
From least to most expensive

Also, Canberra is a little dull, but as a result many students simply stay on campus much of the time so the campus itself is pretty lively.
Brenden is right about the sense of adventure as well, I'll be moving up knowing maybe 2 or 3 people at ANU and I'm excited!

I guess it's also important to compare the relevant faculties from ANU and UoM and what they offer. I'm guessing International studies at ANU would be good, I know they organise internships at parliament house, for what it's worth. It's definitely something to consider. Either way you will receive an exceptional education, meet lots of new people and have a splendid time.

This is the same at every university, not just UoM

Thanks for the replies everyone! I'm not really considering living on campus in Melbourne because I can't afford it (it's over double the price) and it would be a bit silly since I live so close to the city anyway.

Also, Canberra is a little dull, but as a result many students simply stay on campus much of the time so the campus itself is pretty lively.

That's what I'm hoping about ANU and you're right, it is exciting! ANU sounds like it has a very good International Studies department but I'm still not convinced about moving to Canberra, especially when UoM is so close and already such a good university.

This is the same at every university, not just UoM

Yeah I know, that's why living on campus is so appealing. Do you guys generally find that people stick with their high school friends or branch out and make close friends at their university?

You know I'm biased, but here are two (what I believe to be) reasonably objective responses to specific concerns:

1. Chinese, IR, and Philosophy are indubitably best at ANU in the country.  The university is chock-full of leading IR specialists and philosophers and is ranked at the top in both subjects in virtually every single league table ranking (and I mean like top 10-20 in the world level, not just top of Australia).  The Asia-Pacific faculty in general is also sprawling, massive, and incredibly well-respected in the Western world.

2. RE: Russ' comment, it's actually not quite that way at ANU - first of all, there is the on-campus accommodation which means that basically everyone from interstate becomes besties, and secondly, people tend to actually take the same classes because people tend to have similar interests (eg. I can name a number of people off the top of my head who take both philosophy and IR, or both IR and Chinese...), meaning you do make a lot of close friends from classes etc.
